UNIT 1 How the Brain Functions and What It Means to Be Human

Anchor Texts: Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story about Brain Science Reading: Students will examine the central text for main idea Evaluate the sources and evidence used to support main idea. Annotate and Close read, Use word learning strategies, study prefix/suffix root words and figurative, denotative and connotative meanings. Language: sentence construction and type with a focus on parallelism Writing: Project proposal using the central and supplemental texts and other sources found through library research. Speaking and Listening: Short Stories, poetry and art.

UNIT 2 World War II: What causes countries to take extreme actions Anchor Texts: Primary and secondary documents as well as informational texts centered on World War II Reading: Read and analyze primary and secondary sources, vocabulary from text, determine important evident from tests, summarize ideas From text, develop stances on ideas from central text. Language: Determine meanings of unknown words. Writing: Write an essay to answer a critical focus question and support a position with evidence from texts. Speaking and Listening: Participate in discussions and present and support information.

UNIT 3 How the Brain Functions and What It Means to Be Human

Anchor Texts: Flowers for Algernon Reading: Students will: examine

the central text for its main idea, evaluate the sources and

evidence used to support that idea, practice the skills of annotation and close reading,

identification of rhetorical situation, student content rich vocabulary, decipher meaning

from context and figurative, denotative and connotative meanings.

Language: sentence construction and type, with a focus on sentence structures

Writing: Journal writing and reflections. Student s will present

a science symposium based on a proposal written at the end of Unit 1.

Speaking and Listening: Short Stories and Poetry.

UNIT 4 Immigration in American History Course Overview Anchor Texts: Primary and Secondary documents as well as informational texts centered on immigration Reading: Document analysis HIPPO Method, annotation review, compare and contrast, understanding point of view, determine explicit and implicit meaning in a text, create a time line and analyzing political cartoons. Language: Acquire and use grade appropriate language Writing: Write a comparative essay in the form of a DBQ Speaking and Listening: Participate in discussions and present and support information.
