Year One Learning Intentions 2017

Term One Intentions

Show, through movement or visual representations a melodic contour

of high and low sounds from an octave gradually lowering the distance

between the notes to a minor third.

Listen attentively to musical examples and discuss their ideas and

responses.

Maintain a steady beat while performing or listening to speech rhymes,

songs and instrumental music.

Sing an answer in response to a question sung by the teacher.

Aurally and visually recognises the tone colour of untuned classroom

percussion instruments e.g. triangle, drum, maracas etc.

Recognise the use of introduction as an element of musical form

Term Two Intentions

Differentiate between rhythmic patterns and steady beat

Perform the rhythmic pattern of known songs while singing the words

aloud or while singing the words inside the head.

Derive one sound on a beat in simple time as crotchet or ta

Derive two sounds on a beat in simple time as ti-ti or quavers

Show a melodic contour of so and mi sounds through movement or

visual representation

Recognise the use of verse/chorus structure.

Term Three Intentions

Play rhythms containing crotchets and quavers on untuned classroom

percussion instruments from notation, using correct playing technique.

Aurally and visually recognise rhythmic phrases containing crotchets and

quavers

Aurally recognise individual voices

Imitate four beat rhythmic patterns incorporating known elements

Investigate and experiment with echo/response form.

Term Four Intentions

Aurally and visually recognise the tone colour of widely contrasting

melody instruments in selected musical excerpts from “The Nutcracker,”

and discuss basic characteristics of these instruments

Explore family groups of the Orchestra and the similarities of

instruments within these groups

Sings songs within a group of diatonic range with expression

Show a basic understanding of the use of instrumentation to create a

certain mood or effect in music
