Year Three Reading
• Expectation at the end of Year Three – Level 21/22• Read a variety of texts – fiction and non-fiction• Shorter texts focussing on comprehension,
particularly inference.• Discussions about vocab they don’t understand.• Books are read in class first, so they may appear
easy. We focus on reading to decode texts, reading to comprehend, reading for enjoyment. We also focus on improving fluency and expression if needed. These are a strong indicator that a child is struggling with a text.
Reading at Home
• Encourage independent reading as well as reading with you
- reading before lights out in bed- reading on devices
Children could do their reading in the morning with a parent if they are too tired at night.
May use their finger to run down the margin to keep their place or a ruler if they find it particularly difficult.
Discuss the vocab they don’t understand.
You don’t have to read the whole text. Junior Journals may be one article.
Encourage reading by joining the library.
