Yoga Why practice yoga? The physical benefits are well known, including increased strength and flexibility, improved balance and posture, and relief of many physical symptoms. For centuries, yoga has also helped practitioners reduce stress and anxiety, become more mindful and aware, increase immunity and resistance to illness, and bring more joy and contentment into their lives. But there are many kinds of yoga, each with its own areas of focus. Where to start? Read below for more information on the many approaches to yoga offered through Edina Community Education. No matter where you are on your journey, we offer a class to meet your needs and an instructor to help you meet your goals. Remember that any style of yoga (Hatha, Iyengar, Kripalu, Viniyoga, etc.) can be taught at any level (Beginner, Gentle, Intermediate or Vigorous), and in any class, modifications to suit individual needs can also be offered. If you have any questions about the style or level of yoga taught in any of our classes, please call 952-‐848-‐3944 or email [email protected]. Don’t forget: our drop-‐in policy makes it easy for you to experience any of our yoga classes and learn from our amazing instructors. Welcome! Wendy Anderson Yoga for Life Hatha Yoga is slower-‐paced and more relaxed than many styles, while still challenging and very effective. You will work at your own pace and level in a supportive, noncompetitive environment while practicing yoga warm-‐ups and poses along with breathing, centering and relaxation techniques. Wendy Anderson has an extensive background in yoga including a multi-‐year residential training program, teacher training/certification through the Himalayan International Institute, and teaching all levels of yoga in a wide variety of settings since 1974. Her passion in teaching is to make yoga accessible to everyone regardless of age, level of fitness, size, shape or medical issues. See Wendy Anderson’s Yoga Classes here.
Deborah Boudewyns Iyengar Yoga An intense focus on the subtleties of each posture is a hallmark of this form of yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. In an Iyengar class, poses are typically held longer than in other styles of yoga to allow time to focus on precise details of alignment. Props are regularly used to improve alignment. More information here and here. Deborah Boudewyns’ primary Iyengar teacher and yoga guide is William Prottengeier, director of the Minneapolis Yoga Workshop. To improve body alignment and function, manage stress, and tune into the body mindfully and joyfully, Deborah blends her training with her own intuitive, playful style that improves body alignment and function, manages stress, and engage the body. She teaches a professional, safe and dynamic practice to enhance self awareness and nurture physical, emotional and spiritual insight. Note: Deborah Boudewyns will resume her Iyengar Yoga class in Fall 2014. Joanne Gordon Yoga Flow Yoga Flow, developed by Joanne Gordon, combines flowing movements with traditional hatha postures to create vinyasas (flowing sequences) that aid in flexibility and strength. Creative music also helps to facilitate the sense of flow. Joanne Gordon is a graduate of the University of Colorado, where she studied contemporary dance, ballet, and Hatha Yoga. She has taught ballet and yoga for Ballet Arts Minnesota, Minnesota Dance Theater and Edina Community Education for over 20 years. She has also taught yoga to stroke survivors through the Minnesota Stroke Association, and to teens with eating disorders through the Emily Program. See Joanne Gordon’s Yoga class here.
Summer Joy Hills-‐Bonczyk Kripalu Yoga The word Kripalu means compassion. In Kripalu classes, students are encouraged to listen to their own bodies as they are guided through a series of postures, breathwork and meditation. Kripalu yoga uses smooth transitions and proper alignment principles informed by an in-‐depth understanding of anatomy to help students learn body awareness. This style of yoga can be practiced at any level, from gentle and restorative, to dynamic classes that will take you to your physical edge. Kripalu yoga is named for Swami Kripalu who taught yoga as a way of living that encompasses all expressions of life and encourages embracing truth from moment to moment. Learn more here and here. Summer Joy Hills-‐Bonczyk, MFA, RYT-‐200, is a visual and performance artist, dancer, devoted yogi and certified Kripalu yoga teacher. She also leads international retreats that integrate art and yoga. See Summer Joy Hills-‐Bonczyk’s Yoga classes here. Laurie LoPesio Viniyoga Viniyoga is an approach to yoga that considers the individuality of each student’s physical condition, structurally and physiologically. The postures are sequenced with an art and science, allowing them to serve the practitioner, and this makes Viniyoga very user-‐friendly. Viniyoga is a subtle and powerful way to practice yoga. Learn more here. Laurie LoPesio is certified by Gary Kraftsow through the American Viniyoga Institute as both a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist, and continues to study with Gary. She teaches yoga both individually and in the group setting. Laurie enjoys teaching students of all ages. She teaches at Devanadi Yoga Studio in Linden Hills, Pathways Health Crisis Resource Center in Uptown and at several health clubs. Laurie has practiced yoga for 18 years.
