I love my kid’s Kidz Card because we save a fortune every Saturday
as we go to the GFT fi lm theatre and see great kid’s fi lms and take our
sweets and have a great time, and on the way out we give a small donation.
A lot cheaper than going to the cinema, x.

Wee Starof the SeasonI would like to nominate my eldest daughter who is 10 years
old. Her name is Eala Niamh McElhinney. She loves music
and just about 3 years ago started the highland bagpipes.
She progressed from the chanter onto the pipes and for an
adult, is no mean feat! For a 10 year old it is even harder and
I was so proud when she entered herself in the Glasgow
MOD at her own school for the under 12 years of age
piping. She mastered the marching several days before
and competed on 12th June. She was chuff ed that she won
the gold medal… mind you, she was the only competitor in
this particular category! Saying that, without being biased,
she played ever so well and worked very hard to get to her
present standard! I am extremely proud of her as it is one of
the hardest instruments to play, but despite this, she wants
to be a piping instructor when she is older. She is a great help
to me and her two other sisters and practising can be hard
in such a busy household, and we all love her very much!
She is defi nitely my ‘Wee Star of the Season’.

ParentZoneIt’s safe to say my household morning routine
is chaos. I’m a single mum with 2 young kids
and trying to get them up and organised on
my own is a nightmare. I heard about this trick
where a teacher got their class off their seats
and dancing every morning before lessons
started which got them wide awake and ready
for the day. So each morning I wake my kids
up with some music and we all dance around
their bedroom. It really gets them moving
faster in the mornings and it’s fun!

What do you like most about being
Head Coach of the Glasgow Rocks? What I enjoy most is being a part of one of the
best franchises in British Basketball. We have
great facilities and an even better fan-base so
those things make the experience enjoyable.
Do you fi nd it diffi cult to coach
and play alongside your team?In the beginning I found it a challenge, but
towards the end of my career I found it
extremely diffi cult. When I fi rst took over,
many of the players were my teammates
who understood me and what I wanted
for us – but as time has gone by and new
players have come through and the player/
coach situation was not something they had
experienced before.
What has been your greatest achievement as an athlete? As a now retired athlete I’d say it was
the longevity of my career. I had played
professional basketball for 15 years. There are
so many guys I played with that didn’t make
it 2 years so I feel blessed to have had the
strength to do this for as long as I have.
Do you get nervous before a game
and if so, how do you deal with that?I am nervous before every game; but I think
all athletes have some sense of nerves before
a competition. It always seemed that those
games I was most nervous for, I played well in.
I think nerves in sport is healthy.
What’s the most embarrassing
thing that’s happened to you during
a game? I wear contact lenses and my lenses always
get knocked out in which case I have to stop
the whole game and try and fi nd it if it is
not already stuck to someone else’s shoe.
I remember one of my contacts coming out
during a Final in front of around 8,000 people
whom which were all focused on me as
I was crawling over the fl oor looking for my
contact lens.
What do you like most about living and working in Glasgow?I enjoy all the many events and entertainment
choices that come through the city. There is
plenty to do for myself and also for my family
(as long as the weather is OK).
Who are your heroes and why? My hero is and has always been my father. He
really showed me how to make it through life
and showed me how to be a father myself. He
was also a very good basketball coach for me
when I was growing up.
What do you like to do on a day off ?I really enjoy being with my family. I have a
1 year old daughter and an 11 year old little
boy so just doing things with them is all I
need. I’m very much a family guy.

for bedtime readingfor bedtime readingfor bedtime reading
Voting deadline: 5 February 2016
for bedtime reading1 Sharing a story at bedtime is a chance for
you and your child to relax and enjoy
a special moment together.
2 Make a story part of a bedtime routine.
They will love to cuddle up and hear your
voice and will know that it’s time to wind
down, ready for sleep.
3 Just fi ve to ten minutes a day will help
you bond and help your child’s language
development.
4 Make bedtime stories something to look
forward to and enjoy this time together.
5 Snuggle up together, somewhere cosy.
It doesn’t have to be in bed and it’s best
to switch the television off .
6 Choose books with rhyme, rhythm and
repetition – hearing rhyming words will
help them later when they learn to read.
7 Read your child’s favourite books over
and over again.
8 You don’t always have to ‘read’ a book.
Pictures are also very important and help
to tell the story. Point to the pictures and
talk about them and you will be helping
your child learn lots of new words.
9 Try using funny voices or silly noises.
Your child loves the sound of your voice
so try not to be embarrassed or shy. Just
remember to make it fun and laugh a lot.
10 Books are for anytime not just bedtime.

Kelvindale Primary School
How did your choir start?
Mrs Milne and Mrs Stevenson (our visiting
School Music Specialist) teamed up to start
the choir as an after school club 5 years ago.
Mrs Mee who was the school music teacher
and had run the Choir before, had retired a
few years before and the children and staff
were missing the school choir and its angelic
harmonies, particularly at church services.
Since then the choir has gone from strength
to strength and are singing out beautifully
with real confi dence and style.
Where have you performed?
• The Glasgow Royal Concert hall for the
Glasgow Music Festival.
• STV (appeared on the Children’s Songbook
on STV Glasgow on Christmas Day 2014)
• St Enoch’s Centre for Prince and Princess
of Wales trust Charity.
• Kelvingrove Art Gallery (annually at
Christmas)
• The Loft on Ashton Lane (Christmas Concert)
• St John’s Renfi eld Church (Easter and
Christmas Church services)

What are your proudest achievements?Winning fi rst place in the Primary School Choir
category of the Glasgow Music Festival in March
2015 after having participated for 4 years
without being placed was a wonderful and well
deserved achievement for the children after all
of their hard work.
The Choir were also delighted to appear on
STV Glasgow performing their Christmas songs
for the Children’s Christmas Songbook on
Christmas Day 2014.
The choir were also very proud to be able to
perform at The St Enoch’s Centre last session
to help others by raising money for charity.
What’s the group’s favourite song to perform?Last session the children loved performing
‘Santa Claus Boogie’ at Christmas time, ‘So
Long, Farewell’ from the Sound of Music and
‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. They also very
much enjoyed singing Katie Perry’s ‘Firework’
and ‘Something Inside So Strong’ at our
Commonwealth Games inspired sports day
Tell us something our readers might like to know!
Boys and girls can join our choir from Primary
5–7 and we open it up to Primary 4 to have a
taster in the summer term. The choir’s favourite
warm up songs are the ‘12345’ song and the
‘Cars Action’ song. They also love to sing
‘My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean’ while standing
up and sitting down every time they sing a word
beginning with ‘B.’
What’s coming up for your choir?
We will be working on one of our songs for the
Music Festival in March and then from October
onwards we’ll be perfecting our Christmas
repertoire for seasonal performances in
December. From January onwards our main
focus is The Glasgow Music Festival.
What tips can you give people who want to join a choir?
• Sing out
• Smile
• Don’t be afraid to make a mistake
• Set aside regular time to rehearse

make your own...snowflake Christmas card
2 easy
chocolatespread recipes
34
Getting started… You will need:• A4 or A5 cardboard
• Thick paper (or more cardboard),
scissors, coloured pens (try green, red, silver and gold)
• Paints and paintbrush
• An adult assistant!
Instructions:1 To make your snowfl ake stamp, cut your paper into a square
and fold in half diagonally to make a triangle.
2 Fold your triangle in half again so the pointy corners meet.
3 Fold again into thirds.
4 Fold into the example shape. You may need to adjust your
folds slightly to get the sides to match up, so don’t crease
the paper until the folds are just right.
5 Cut across the bottom.
6 Cut the folded paper with straight and curvy lines.
Experiment by cutting out di erent shapes.
7 Paint one side of your snowfl ake (white or silver looks best).
8 Carefully place your snowfl ake paint-side down on to the
card and leave for 10 seconds.
9 Peel o and let your card dry.
10 Fold in half and use your coloured pens to write a colourful
message on your card!
Crafty Tip...You could even add a little festive sparkle by sticking on some glitter!
