A first glance at this year’s African Business Top 100 Banks suggests a difficult time in the African banking sector. The com-bined tier 1 capital of the Top 100 is down 6% on last year, from $93.1bn to $88.2bn. And both years represent a big fall on the $101.9bn we recorded in 2015. However, the performance of banks in local cur-

rency terms is actually much rosier. Big declines in the prices of almost all African commodities and currency devaluations in some of the more important markets adversely affected the performance of the banks in dollar terms. Once you exclude these currency fluctuations, the situation is not so dire.
