Hola Chola iiiitss…SUMMERTIME !!!My favorite season of the year, it can make you feel like when everything comes together effortlessly, and that is also true when it comes to our hair. For the ladies, we still see a lot of mid-partings in natural looking, but big, and wavy hair... Yes, you heard it right volume is back! But it shouldn’t look artificial though. Those who are blessed with natural curly or wavy hair simply need a good haircut, and those with a more straight or limp hair can come a very long way with a CHI curler.

All the surf babes are probably stocking up on the beach texture spray for that wild nonchalant look, but don’t forget that when you use matifying sprays, you need extra conditioner or a masque to make sure it doesn’t loose moister.

The hair colours of the moment should look like only the sun has touched your hair. And I know what you’re thinking right now… but NO I’m NOT talking highlights here. Stop what you are doing right now and make an appointment, please.

And now for the men… Baby faces are still badass, remember that. To all of you who have read my article in the previous magalogue, you know that the ‘mad men meets James Dean’ -look is really working. The only thing we need to do now is to summerfy it. So lets make that hairdo just a little shorter, maybe a little wilder on top, take out all the shine, put in that beach worthy look and BAM awesome, stud-summer-hair.

All the baby face badasses who choose to go for a shorter version cannot live without a pair of SUPER-retro-future sunglasses, obviously… and the matte wax. Who dares to leave his hair a little longer on top, will be happiest with the combo beach texture spray/matte wax.

Dani foffa started his passion working on vintage bikes in 2007 from his tiny flat whilst keeping his day job in the city. In 2009 he quit his job and took a risk to follow his passion and teamed up with photographer tyson sadlo to create foffa bikes. They then opened a shop in east london along with a few more passionate cyclist friends. Since then foffa bikes have launched 4 customisable models, the ‘gears’, the single speed ‘prima’, the women’s ‘grazia’ and the urban concept ‘ciao’. They also have their range of high quality parts and are taking frame customisation to the next level with their range of designer stickers. You might have noticed this guy at our Gadget and Book Department and if you haven’t met him yet, he has probably drove past you at least once on one of his fixies. We’re talking about one of our dearest staff members, Ken. An energetic dude who keeps the positive vibe alive at any given moment. We had a little Q&A with him, but if you still want to meet him...just pass by YOUR or chase him on one of his bikes!

Y: How did you start working at YOUR? What did you bring here?K: I have always liked YOUR, even before i worked here. For me it was like a store where you could easily enter and walk around to spend some free time. I’ve worked in the reataurant-business for a couple of years, but i kind of grew out of it and at some point i saw the application-poster at YOUR. Contacted the manager and a couple of days later i was working at YOUR!

Y: Ken travels everyday by bike. But not just a bike... Tell us a bit more about your bike(s) and why you love riding it. K: The feeling i have is so hard to explain. It’s just a strong and absurd feeling of freedom and control while i’m riding my bikes. I love to ride fixed gear, which means that you ride single speed and have no brakes! Every day i look forward riding one of my bikes to work and returning home after a busy day. I try to find new routes every time, take detours to more quiet alleys and free my mind while others are stuck in traffic. I love the movement and rhythm of the city.

Y: Is it a coincidence that the amount of fixed gear books has increased at our Gadget and Book Dept. since you started working here? K: The fact that the books about biks have increased that much is because of the good taste of our store Guv’nor Jorrit. Maybe he just couldn’t ignore that i’m always talking about bikes... But it’s probably because you simply can’t ignore the bike anymore. So i think it was the right time to get some interesting lecture and put it in the right place, our Book Department. After all, the bike is still one of the most loved tranportvehicles in Belgium! Be amazed!

Y: It’s obvious that the bike-messenger look needs tattoos. Tell us a bit more about your tats? Where did you get them? What’s the story? K: All of my tattoos have a story behind them. I will only get inked when there actually is a meaning behind it. Most of the drawings on my skin are things i will and can’t ever forget. On one of my calves there’s written: “sic transit gloria mundi” which is a Latin sentence for “Thus passes the glory of the world”. A sentence that reminds me to stop dreaming and just be myself without thinking that the world is at my feet. Other tat’s are an anglerfish, mermaids and a gingerbreadman. All of them have a specific and personal meaning.

Y: Can you tell us a bit more about the evolution of the Kloosterstraat for the past 5 years and which role ‘Chez Fred’ and YOUR has in it.A: The concept of the Kloosterstraat has, as far as i can remember, always been popular. It used to be all about the antique-shops and the Montmarte-feel, but since 2 years it has changed a lot because of YOUR and Chez Fred. People visit the Kloosterstraat especially to go to YOUR and take the cosyness of the antique-shops as a plus. Those “new” visitors have had it with the busy shoppingarea and now enjoy a unique experience in Antwerp with some shopping at YOUR and a lovely lunch at ‘Chez Fred’. Our clients can enjoy the Parisian atmosphere in our French-like bistro with the best food and service they can get and together with the unique YOUR-experience.

Y: What’s the power of “Chez Fred”?A: The first thing that comes to mind is the ratio quality and quantity. We serve our clients delicious dishes that aren’t tiny and best of all: the price is right. A great plus about “Chez Fred” might also be the coffee. As a trained barista I do everything I can to serve a great espresso or cappuccino with a nice Latte-Art drawing. This all combined, added with a great vibe from our staff and the well known quiet terrace, will make your day/stay in Antwerp worth while.

Y: What’s THE DISH at “Chez Fred”?A: Tuna steak, no doubt. We serve every dish made with care for the product, but if there’s one thing you have to state as the best dish it’s definitely the 2 versions of Tuna Steak. The well known “stoofvlees” and steak with fries used to be the reason why people came to us, but one of my favourites stays the Tuna Steak.
