MOVING TO FINLAND - CHECKLISTYou must officially register yourself as a resident in Finland.

2. Finnish Immigration Service: Confirm your right of residence in Finland. Register your right of residence (EU/EEA citizen). Persons moving to Finland from outside the EU must have a valid residence permit.

3. Kela: Apply for social security coverage in Finland.

4. Employment and Economic Development Office (TE Office): If you are unemplo-yed, you may register as a jobseeker. Persons moving to Finland for work will also receive integration assistance (language courses, etc.). Bring your passport, resi-dence permit, right of residence certificate and other important certificates. Please read the following pages for more detailed information. SOCIAL INSURANCE INSTITUTION OF FINLAND (KELA)Once you have received your personal identity code from the Local Register Office, you may apply for the appropriate social security and sickness coverage. You will receive your Kela card by post. You will need to present your Kela card when visi-ting a health centre, pharmacy or hospital.

EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (TE OFFICE)If you do not have a job or study place, you must register with the TE Office. The TE Offices also prepares integration plans for immigrants. You can search for Finnish language courses through the TE Office. The TE Office also provides additional in-formation on job vacancies.

TAX OFFICE In Finland, everyone pays tax. Income taxation in Finland is progressive. If your in-come is low, the tax rate will be low. If your income is high, you must pay relatively higher taxes.

Tax revenues go to the state and municipalities. Tax revenues are used to pay for a variety of services and social security, such as Kela benefits, health care and schools.

If you are employed or are receiving financial assistance from, for example, Kela, you must pay tax. The tax office guides and advises you on matters related to ta-xation.

TAX CARDYou will receive your first tax card from the tax office. In order to obtain a tax card, you must have a Finnish personal identity code. When you start a job, you must give your tax card to the employer.

You will be sent tax cards for each year by mail. If there are any changes in your income, you must apply for a new tax card.

POLICEIn Finland, the Police are responsible for maintaining public order and safety. The Police issue various permits and licences, such as residence permits for foreigners, passports and driving licences. Permits and licences are to be applied for at the police station.

HOUSINGYou can rent a residence from a private landlord or the Housing Office.

The Housing Office is located in City Hall.

You must pay a security deposit before moving into the rental.

The security deposit is at least equal to one month’s rent.

If the rental is left intact and all the rent is paid, the security deposit will be repaid when you move out of the rental.

WASTE MANAGEMENTIn Finland, you must sort (separate) waste. Most housing companies (condomi-niums) have separate waste containers, such as for compostable waste, paper and cardboard. Metal or glass waste can be taken to the nearest public recycling colle-ction point.

Recycling collection points can be found on the grounds of the K-Supermarket, Neste service station and Laidunalue heating plant.

Waste sorting instructions can be found on the next page.

HAZARDOUS WASTEIf you have any used batteries, fluorescent bulbs, energy-saving light bulbs, paints, varnishes, oils or other toxic substances, you must bring them to Ekolanssi (Teol-lisuustie 10) for proper disposal. Used batteries can also be returned in the store.

Ekolanssi is open on Tuesdays 4:00-7:00pm.

Biowaste (compost) Biowaste includes all food waste as well as used coffee filters and paper towels. Biowaste must first be placed in a paper or biowaste bag and then in the biowaste container.

Paper Paper waste includes newspapers, envelopes and advertising flyers, among others. Place paper in the paper recycling container.

Card/paperboard Card/paperboard includes milk and other drink cartons, pizza bo-xes, egg cartons, cookie packaging and brown cardboard. Place all card/paperboard in the card/paperboard recycling container.

Glass Deposit bottles are to be returned to the store, where you will be repaid the deposit. You can bring intact and clean glassware to, for example, a flea market. Broken or unusable glass must be placed in the glass recycling container.

Metal Small metal items, such as tin cans, can be placed in the metal recycling container.

Mixed waste: Mixed waste is any waste that cannot be otherwise sorted. Mixed waste is to be placed in a closed bag and then into the appropriate mixed waste bin.

EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS OVER 17 YEARS AND ADULTSSuomistartti teaches Finnish language and about Finnish society to all immigrants above the age of 17. Suomistartti is organised by the city of Pudasjärvi.

ASSOCIATIONSFINNISH RED CROSSThe Pudasjärvi branch of the Finnish Red Cross maintains a first aid team as well as the Reddie Kids Club for children and teens.

RURAL WOMEN’S ADVISORY ORGANISATIONThe Pudasjärvi Rural Women’s Advisory Organisation arranges various training courses, excursions and events, and provides a coffee and catering service.
