Youth Engagement Plan
Since the 1960’s, when park visitation was at its highest of 500,000 visitors, visitation
has fallen to 200,000 visitors the past number of years.
To improve the visitation numbers a youth engagement strategy is proposed.
Approximately 75,000 elementary school aged children live in the Edmonton area.
Based on these numbers park visitation could increase by 150,000 if one child where to be
accompanied by one parent each visit. These numbers could grow larger if children visited
multiple times per year.
Youth Engagement Plan
School programs that the park offers are currently oversubscribed with many
thousands of students being turned away each year. This marketing proposal is
targeted directly at the parents of elementary school aged children, in order to motivate them to take their children to
the park.
Youth Engagement Plan
The following video presentation accompanies the proposal submitted and is
a tool to use in appropriate marketing channels. The video outlines the benefits for both parents and their children when visiting the park. Constraints to visiting
the park are also addressed with solutions to these challenges included.

What does Elk Island Have to offer?
RecreationEducationWildlife Viewing
Boasting over 250 species of birds, the park is a bird watcher's paradise.
Elk Island Park has higher densities of hoofed mammals per square kilometer than any other wild area in the world,
with the exception of the Serengeti Plains of Africa.
Children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including coordination, balance and agility,
and they are sick less often (Grahn, et al. 1997, Fjortoft & Sageie
2001).
Mother of three
When Children play in natural environments, their play is more
diverse with imaginative and creative play that fosters language and collaborative skills (Moore & Wong 1997, Taylor et al. 2002).
Children with views of and contact with nature score higher on tests
of concentration and self-discipline. The greener, the better the scores (Wells 2000, Taylor et
al. 2002).
Early experiences with the natural world have been positively linked
with the development of imagination and sense of wonder
(Cobb 1977, Louv 1991). Wonder is an important motivator for lifelong
learning (Wilson 1997).
