2 Youth Summer 2015

Summer is right around the corner! Or at least, here at Edina Community Education, it is. We are always striving to provide you with the right mix of fun, enriching and globally and locally relevant activities that are in line with the EPS profile of a next generation learner. So no matter if they are four or fourteen, this summer’s line-up offers innovative experiences for your artists, techies, performers, movers and even the messy ones who like to dig in the dirt! Below are some of my favorites this year;

• Biking Adventures includes four days of biking excursions around town. It’s a popular experience and full of “adventures”! New this year is a partnership with the Bicycle Alliance of MN who will provide complimentary bicycles and helmets that will make your life easier and make for a much safer ride for everyone!

• “What’s up in the Garden: Harvest and Cook at South View” is offered three times this summer in June, July and August. Register for one or all three because every month something new will be happening in the garden. Kids will learn how to maintain a summer garden, harvest seasonal vegetables and learn to incorporate them into healthy meals your whole family can enjoy.

• Archery- where nothing beats the thrill of hitting a bull’s-eye and in our July camp, kids will learn how to hit “ it” as well as all aspects of range safety and proper shooting techniques. This is a great sport for kids of all abilities and social skills a place where they can make new friends and be part of a team in a welcoming fun environment.

If what you need is a variety of activities to beat that “I’m bored” attitude, then check out our abundance of choices throughout this catalog and online at edina.thatscommnuityed.com. Pick and choose what you need and when you need it. Build a full week of cool activities for your child and we will make sure they’re safe and engaged every step of the way. Don’t break the bank either! We offer financial assistance to families who qualify. Visit our website at edinaschools.org/financialassistance for more information.

As always, we welcome your feedback. We work hard to offer high-quality programming that meets the needs of young learners of all stages and abilities. Please call us at 952-848-3952 to offer your constructive feedback or email [email protected].

4 Youth Summer 2015

The days of shushing students in the school library are over. A certain amount of decorum in the media center is still expected, but school media centers are no longer a single-use space where students studied alone, in silence. Today’s students are just as likely to be actively creating and studying collaboratively. It is a sign of how learning has changed, and of the changed expectations of the business world.

A variety of flexible, multi-use learning spaces are key to accomplishing Edina Public Schools’ (EPS) Next Generation Strategic Plan, an initiative that is focused on providing students with the education, skills and competencies they will need for successful careers and lives in the future. On May 5, the community will vote on a district proposal that seeks to align its schools and classrooms with this vision. The proposal seeks voter approval of $124.9 million in facilities improvements, touching every one of its 10 schools. The majority of the proposal, 81 percent, is targeted for Next Generation Learning Spaces – a key element to bringing the Next Gen strategic plan to life.

“We want our education program to drive the kinds of facilities we have and the way we use them,” said Superintendent Ric Dressen. “Right now we are trying to fit 21st century learning into 20th century spaces.”

Some adaptations to media centers have already made the rooms more usable for today’s students and have become a hub of activity at every school. On any given day, you are likely to find small groups of students collaborating on projects in one space, an entire class working in another area, and individual students diving deep into their own projects at a corner table. Likewise, classroom teachers have creatively moved shelves and furniture around to make a variety of learning environments in their rooms. But retro-fitting and creative uses of furniture only go so far. With a need to accommodate all kinds of student needs and learning styles, the district believes the time is now to invest in the future and its facilities.

The facilities proposal includes projects that fall into three categories: enhancing building security, investing in district infrastructure, and creating Next Generation Learning Spaces. Security enhancements are slated for

every district building, and investments in infrastructure include improved access to outdoor learning spaces and an updated transportation services building. The bulk of the funds, however, are earmarked for renovation and addition of educational spaces.

“When I envision what a redesigned lab might look like, I see a large space that can be easily adapted to any classroom activity — small or large group gathering areas and presentation space,” said Tim Berndt, a Project Lead The Way engineering teacher at South View Middle School. But it is not just science and technology courses that are in need of redesigned learning spaces. Many content areas can benefit from flexible spaces where students can design, create and innovate. “These are the skills we know our students will need as they enter the

‘real world.’ By providing them with hands-on, real-world learning experiences, they are able to explore a variety of possible future pathways.”

Similarly, each of the district’s elementary schools as well as the early childhood program at the Edina Community Center will see additions and/or renovations that allow for a variety of learning spaces to help personalize learning for all students.

“We know that kids learn in different ways and have different needs throughout the day based on what they are working on,” said Mark Wallace, continuous progress teacher at Highlands Elementary. “The traditional ‘box’ classroom approach does not allow for a wide enough variety of learning modalities to take place simultaneously.”

At Edina High School, additions to accommodate the future move of ninth grade to the high school and a need for more diverse learning spaces, including individual, small and large group spaces and gymnasiums, will allow the district to continue its tradition of high quality educational experiences while also plan for future learning needs. “We want to continue to provide a breadth of learning experiences for all our high school students,” said Bruce Locklear, Edina High School principal. “Updating our facilities will provide all Edina High School students with hands-on and leadership opportunities in not only academics, but also in the arts, athletics and after school activities that are critical to a well-rounded education.”

A December survey of the community shows that most Edina residents believe investment in the school district’s facilities is appropriate and that the need is real. District administration says that is an indication of the long-standing partnership between the community and the district.

“Understanding that the average age of our buildings is over 40 years old, the district has historically made facilities improvements, with the support of Edina residents, about every 10 years. Together we have created an environment of excellence that has served our students very well,” Dressen said. “This referendum will fund that next step into the future and accommodate new learning needs that are already upon us.”

When the weather turns warmer, students’ attention spans often get shorter. Programs offered by Community Education Services (CES) can help students maintain their academic progress and keep personalized learning going through the summer.

Summer Success offers personalized learning opportunities for students in grades 1-8 who need support in math and reading, and who have participated in the Success Center program during the school year. Summer Success continues the work with Community Education staff partnering with teaching staff, and math and literacy coaches. They create a three-week, rich learning experience for students. Students qualify for the program based on standardized test scores and classroom performance. Summer Success is an opportunity for students who participate in Success Center during the year to keep strengthening their math and reading skills, but with a summer vibe.

Summer Success and ESY programs are in session during the middle of summer vacation, from July 20 through Aug. 7. They vary in the number of days they meet each week (usually three or four) and in the hours they are in session each day (typically around six hours). But the timing is intentional— to first take a break from school routine, and then regroup mid-summer to refresh what has already been learned and to learn new skills in a summer kind of way.

“The focus is on the whole learner, incorporating academics, social and emotional learning. Summer is the perfect time for this type of learning,” said Andrea Bernhardt, Community Resources & Adult Involvement Coordinator. Reading focus skills include working on comprehension, fluency, decoding, vocabulary, test taking and writing. Math instruction emphasizes computation, problem solving, number sense, data analysis, and geometry and measurement.

Summer Success is one piece of CES summer youth programming. Other programs provide different opportunities to meet students’ individual interests and needs:

► Students who participate in special education programming during the school year will receive information about the Extended School Year (ESY), which builds on school year progress and continues individualized learning plans.

► Summer youth enrichment camps and classes keep youth engaged and allow them to focus on areas of interest. The learning happens with fun and engaging activities that compliment the district’s six identified Educational Competencies.

► For families who need extended summer childcare, CES provides quality accredited school age care programs for youth in grades k – 9. KIDS Club, WISE Guys and SURGE offer fun, action-packed programming in a full-day format. Scheduling is flexible so families can signup for as many or as few days as fits their needs.

“The variety and inclusiveness of our summer programming is a great example of our commitment to learning anytime, anywhere — for everyone,” said Val Burke, director of CES.

Learning life skills often happens naturally during the course of a day. Kids learn from experience how to communicate and collaborate. They see the activities of adults around them and observe active citizenship and the benefits of exercise. But Edina Public Schools (EPS) is not willing to leave this important kind of learning to chance. Six Educational Competencies have been identified as being key attributes for the success of future EPS students. And they have become an important piece of the Next Generation of Edina Public Schools Strategic Plan.

There is a unique opportunity to focus on these competencies in Edina Community Education Services (CES) programming, where learning happens outside of the school day and often, outside of a classroom. During the summer, when students are more relaxed, educational competencies can be incorporated in different ways since programming differs from the school day schedule. CES Director Valerie Burke says her staff is conscious of the competencies when they plan curriculum throughout the year, and look for ways to touch on each one.

“When we plan new classes we ask ourselves, ‘What bucket does that fit in? Will it enrich global competency? Does it speak to innovation and creativity?’” Burke says. “And then at the end of our session, we look to see if any of the buckets are empty. Then as we continue our program planning, we look to fill that bucket too.”

Meg Barrett, Youth Service coordinator, says she and her staff try to build on the knowledge that students already have.

“We consider what the kids in various age groups have learned about and look for ways that we can do more,” Barrett says. “We are being more intentional and thoughtful about the competencies and how we can build those in.”

At the Countryside KIDS Club, which CES facilitates, students have taken a lot of responsibility for the new garden in handling the weeding, watering and harvesting.

“All of the harvested food has been donated to the VEAP food shelf, “ says Erica Koller, Countryside’s KIDS Club manger. “This has been an ongoing conversation in our program.”

SUMMER OFFERINGS PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW LIFE SKILLS

Page 69: Youth Summer Programs 2015

Other lessons related to citizenship are teaching students to be responsible for their actions, learn from their mistakes and “fix” them whenever possible.

Communication and collaboration is a major part of the daily program “Skillstreaming the Elementary Child,” which focuses on teaching non-violent resolution to conflict. Each week they focus on a skill, such as friendship-making or dealing with feelings. Then through role-playing, skits and other activities the skill is learned. Each year the program repeats. “By 3rd grade these kids are able to productively help us teach the skills to other kids,” Koller says.

It is never too early to start learning these important, yet basic, social and emotional skills. In the Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) program, practice in the competencies is woven throughout the day, according to Laurie Denn, ECFE coordinator.

“The competencies are a natural part of each child’s day because we have established a high quality early childhood learning environment which is designed to support the whole child,” Denn says.

Becoming globally competent, one of the six identified by the district, comes with being a member of a classroom where there is growing diversity. “It varies by classroom, but we have growing diversity in all of our early childhood programs,” Denn says. “Each class reflects the growing trend of families coming here from across the world. Children gain a global perspective when they sit across the table from a child who speaks a language other than English.”

As every parent and teacher knows, learning communication and collaboration are among the first social skills young children are taught. “We are always telling our students, ‘Use your words,’” Denn says. “But we also use picture schedules and other ways to communicate so that we are sure each child is getting the message.”

Other competencies still need some work in the early childhood classrooms, such as becoming a well-rounded person. “We are not there yet,” Denn says. “Learning to make good food choices and exercising are ideas that all of us – kids and adults --continue to work on. All good life long learners take responsibility for different things at different ages, but we introduce the concepts early on.”

As part of the district’s strategic plan implementation, a study of CES programming began in December 2014, with a goal

of more closely aligning CES programming with the strategic plan and district’s educational services. Studies of the district’s secondary and birth through grade five programs are on-going. “We work closely with the district, developing our programing to enrich what is happening in the classrooms during the school day,” Burke said. “Our strategic study will help us further integrate community education to create a continuum of services, not only for students, but everyone as a community of life-long learners.”
