ZIKA VIRUS: A Growing Global Health Emergency WHAT IS ZIKA? The Zika virus is a mosquito transmitted infection. Infection during pregnancy can cause microcephaly, a birth defect characterized by an unusually small head, often accompanied by brain damage. Zika has also been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare disorder that can cause muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ZIKA? MOST COMMON ZIKA SYMPTOMS OTHER SYMPTOMS FEVER JOINT PAIN MUSCLE PAIN CONJUNCTIVITIS ( RED EYES ) HEADACHE RASH Many people infected with Zika won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms. WHERE IS ZIKA? Zika has been identified in more than 45 countries. PFIZER’S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING VITAL SUPPORT FOR ZIKA-RELATED EFFORTS Between the Pfizer Foundation* and Pfizer, we have provided $4.1 million total in grants to support surveillance, testing and prevention efforts related to Zika in Latin America, the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico, including: $1 million to the CDC Foundation Donation of up to 170,000 doses of Pfizer’s long-acting contraceptive product to the CDC Foundation’s Zika Contraception Access Network (Z-CAN) initiative in Puerto Rico $1 million to the Pan-Ameri- can Health Organization Foundation, an international public health agency in the Americas, to develop a surveillance model to enhance response across Latin America and the Caribbean $1 million each to the Florida Department of Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services to support Zika prevention, screening and diagnosis efforts, and lab testing if needed $100,000 to Population Services International, a global health organization focused on reproductive health, to support the production of Safe Pregnancy Kits in Latin America * The Pfizer Foundation is a charitable organization established by Pfizer Inc.
