And therefore, may it be Your will, Hashem our G-d and G-d of our fathers, that You will direct our hearts to have awe and love for You, and that Your earswill listen to our words, and that You will open our uncircumcised hearts withthe secrets of Your Torah. And may this learning bring pleasure before YourThrone of Honor like a pleasing fragrance, and that You will emanate light uponus from the source of our soul (neshama) in all of our aspects. And may thesparks of Your holy servants through whom You revealed these words of Yoursin the world, shine out. And may their merit, and the merit of their fathers, andthe merit of their Torah, and their simplicity, and their holiness, stand us up sothat we do not fall in these words. And in their merit You will illuminate oureyes in what we learn. As the Sweet Singer of Israel says (Tehilim 119:18): "Openmy eyes and I will see the wonders from Your Torah." May the speech of mymouth and the thoughts of my heart find favor before you, Hashem, my Rockand my Redeemer. Because Hashem will give wisdom from His mouth, knowledge and understanding.

!"#$%!&'$ () A Kabbalistic Unification

A Kabbalistic Unification To Say Before Learning The Zoharfrom the Sefer 'Sod Hashem'

For the sake of the unification of the Holy One Blessed Is He and His Shechina, with awe and love, and with love and awe, to unify the name Yud and Heh withVav and Heh with a complete unity, through He who is hidden and concealed,in the name of all of Yisrael, to raise up the Shechina from the dust, and toelevate the Shechina of our strength, a mother of happy children. I hereby bindmyself, through this transcendent learning, with the neshama of all of theTannaim and the Tzaddikim whose names are written in the Zohar HaKadosh, and with their leader the Tanna HaEloki Rebbi Shimon Bar Yochai and RebbiElazar his son. And through this, please fulfill the tefillah of David HaMelech, may peace be upon him (Tehillim 61:4-5): "You have been a refuge for me, atower of strength in the face of the enemy. I will dwell in your tent forever, Iwill take refuge in the shelter of your wings, selah." And I should merit throughthis, our learning, that their (the Tannaim and Tzaddikim) lips will move in theirgraves, for the sake of His name, with love, to make nachat ruach for the Onewho Formed us, and to do the will of the One who Created us. And with thisbook, the Sefer HaZohar, Yisrael will be redeemed from exile with rachamim.(As it says Tehillim 90:16-17): "Let your work be revealed to your servants, andyour splendor be upon their children. And the pleasantness of my Master,Elokeinu, will be on us, and the work of our hands He will establish for us, andthe work of our hands He will establish. And the pleasantness of my Master,Elokeinu, will be on us, and the work of our hands He will establish for us, andthe work of our hands He will establish.

Further Insights

If the Zohar teaches in many places that Hashem and His Torah are One, why does Rebbi Abba say that the ‘hard of heart’ are far from the Torah, while Rebbi Chizkia says that they are far from Hashem? !

The Rabbis of the Zohar are actually coming to teach us about two facets of relationship with this One-ness:

Rebbi Abba is teaching that they are far from the Torah, which is, so to speak, the ‘clothing’ of Hashem’s will. It is the special system designed to teach us and enable us to connect everything in the world to Him.

Rebbi Chizkia is teaching that they are far from the realization, experience, and awareness of Hashem’s existence and presence.

In order to live a properly integrated Jewish life in this world, we need to have both facets.

Bracha v’hatzlacha.

As we mentioned, the trees of the Garden of Eden that burst forth in song to Hashem are actually the manifestation of the Sefirot, or Divine Attributes, of the Tree of Life. But how do we know that this verse is speaking spiritually?

continued on the next page

Page 20: Zohar Parashat Lech Lecha

"#$%!"#$%&!'&(!)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!

)+!

Because the verse starts with the word ! " (az) which has a gematria of 8, referring to the sefira of bina, the 8th sefira when counting from below to above. This 8 always refers to the transcendent level of the Garden, of bina, of Olam HaBa, a step above our universe, which is represented by the number seven.

And why does this last paragraph above in the Zohar begin with the familiar expression ‘ta chazi’ (come see)? What new teaching are we being shown relative to what was said before?

That the whole world was created to reach a perfected state that we can reach towards through learning Torah. So if, chas v’shalom, people don’t learn Torah, they cause the enduring inner spiritual life force that Hashem put inside of everything created to not be manifest. It weakens, as it were, the revelation and experience of His existence. When a person does learn Torah, it infuses a revelation of Hashem’s light inside of everything in existence and in so doing connects everything to its root in the spiritual worlds above. This happens on an especially powerful level when a person merits to arise at chatzot laila and serve Hashem then.

Avraham Avinu, who embodied chesed in the world, is especially connected with this, as we find in this parasha. Avraham won the war against the kings specifically at chatzot laila – he drew a special salvation and victory to him, because as we know, chatzot laila is a time when the din of night is turned around to chesed, a manifestation of Hashem’s power of giving.

Anyone who merits to be busy serving Hashem at that special time of chatzot laila is engraved up there in the spiritual worlds as is known, and it gives him a very special Hashem connection. Bracha v’hatzlacha.

What is the point of the discussion here about whether Avraham ‘went’, or ‘left’,?

When the Torah speaks about Avraham’s traveling, we have to have in mind that the main place of a person is where their conscious awareness is centered.

Therefore, what the Zohar is illuminating for us is that Avraham had to first leave the state of consciousness of Chutza L’Aretz, the lands outside of Eretz Yisrael, about which the Gemara in Ketubot says that there, Hashem’s presence is hidden. After leaving that consciousness, the next step is entering into the kedusha of Eretz Yisrael, preparing oneself for Hashem revelation.

In other words, the first step is to leave idolatry, to realize that there is only one Hashem, and the second step is to come to an experiential revelation of His presence and existence. That is the point of the Zohar over here.

So, why doesn’t the Torah say that Avraham ‘left’? The Zohar asks this question to show us that the Torah is making a specific point to teach us that the first step in getting closer to Hashem is to leave behind all of our pursuit of physicality and materialism, which is also a type of idolatry. Only then can we prepare ourselves for the next step, to go up into Hashem revelation. Bracha v’hatzlacha. “Because of this work, the Book of the Zohar, [the Jews] will be

The Zohar mentioned a term commonly used by Chazal (our beloved Rabbis) - dina v’chushbana, judgment and accounting. The Vilna Gaon explains this term as follows:

A person is first judged before Hashem for any sins he might have done, chas v’shalom. Then he has to give an accounting for the good things that he could have been doing at that time when he was not fulfilling Hashem’s will.

It is very, very deep, the judgment. “Because of this work, the Book of the Zohar, [the Jews] will be

The Light of the Zohar And at the time of the footsteps of the Mashiach, with the strengthening of evil, indecency, and bad character traits under the leadership of the Erev Rav, the hidden light from shamayim was revealed - the Sefer haZohar and the Tikkunim, and the Kitvei haAri haKadosh. Through their study, we remove the weeds and the evil in our souls, we merit to cling to the exalted light, and we merit to have all of the good character traits. This is why this light was revealed in these times. The main aspect of your study should be in the secrets of the Torah, so that you will perceive the light and the life-force of Hashem, but not so that you should be a Kabbalist, or that you should be constantly asking questions. As our Master the Ari haKadosh said, in our times the secrets have become the revealed matters. Hashem derives great simcha when we study the secrets of the Torah and when we reveal them to all of Yisrael, but on the condition that we mentioned before, because otherwise a person has no portion in the secrets of the Torah. - Rabbi Yehudah Leib Margoliot, Sefer Atzei Eden 208

Also in our lives, when we encounter Mitzrayim, which is being subject to the limitations of materialism, we must be careful to protect our neshama from being taken and sunk down into the materialism by the Other Side.

And if it happens that in trying to protect ourselves, we are not immediately successful, we must still rely on and trust that Hashem is taking care of us and helping us through.

! "# $% &'(! )(* +,- "+ - “Behold, now I know” means

.! "#$%& '( $) * "+ ', ! "- ". $/ - that he saw the Shechina with her.

.!" #$ " #%& ' (! ) *+,-. - and he said, “She is my sister.” On the simple level, if she is his wife, they would kill him and take her, but if she is his sister, they would just take her. However, there is more to it:

.!"#$%&%'( " )* &+ #, -'. /0 &1 #2 2 /3 4/. #56 - And this issue arises in two ways, it has a multi-faceted explanation.

.!" #$ %& '$ %( ) '* - One way as is heard, on the literal level.

Page 40: Zohar Parashat Lech Lecha

"#$%!"#$%&!'&(!+!

!

++!

!" #$ !% $ &'!((! "#$%) ,&" '( - And one as is written, on a deeper level, as in the verse (Mishlei 7:4):

. !" #$ % &'( ) *$ + #,!- #) ./ 01, 2$ - “Say that chochma is my sister…” Avraham saw that the Shechina, the source of all chochma, was with Sarah, thus he said “She is my sister”.

!

A Deeper Explanation !! Regarding chochma being called ‘sister’, we find in the Tikunei Zohar and a few other places in the Zohar, about Moshe Rabbeinu, that “his sister stood from afar.” This hints to the fact that chochma (a flash of wisdom or insight) is like standing from afar because it is a surrounding light that comes into the mind.

Further, Shlomo HaMelech says, “It says I will be wise, and it is far away from me.” The Gemara learns from this verse that a person should not say anything from the Torah unless it is as clear to him as the fact that his sister is forbidden to him.

This seems to be a strange parable that the Rabbis are using here. But the great depth behind it is that the connection between brother and sister is drawn from the connection of chochma and bina, which correspond to the Yud and Heh of Hashem’s name.

They are called ‘two friends who are never separate’, but the unification is a spiritual one, in the mind, just like the unification of brother and sister is something spiritual, in the mind - it has no physical manifestation. continued…

Page 41: Zohar Parashat Lech Lecha

"#$%!"#$%&!'&(!+!

!

+,!

!" #$ %&' - And it is written here in Lech Lecha (B’reishit 12:13):

. !" #$ % &'( ) *$ $#+ % &, !- &$ - “Please say you are my sister…” Avraham thought that the klipot, the negative forces, would have no hold on the upper three sefirot, and would thus not threaten to break his connection with Sarah. But because Mitzrayim is from the upper three sefirot of the Other Side,

!

A person should only speak words of Torah if he has connection to the Torah from that high level, coming from chochma and bina, from the surrounding light, the level that is above this world. ! What is special about Avraham and Sarah is that besides the unification of the lower seven sefirot that every couple has between them in their physical and emotional relationship, living in the world, they also merited to a unification in their upper three sefirot. This unification was completely spiritual and connected to the Shechina in everything, and only through Hashem’s chochma, the deepest levels. ! Because of that, he was afraid that in Mitzrayim, which is a very strong negative force, when they saw his high level of kedusha, they would try to grab it for themselves, chas v’shalom. As it says that Mitzrayim was like the other three sefirot on the side of evil, as there are 10 sefirot on the negative side opposite the 10 sefirot on the good side. Hashem made everything with its opposite. !!

Page 42: Zohar Parashat Lech Lecha

"#$%!"#$%&!'&(!+!

!

+-! they were able to take her. Hashem then had to ‘step in’ from the level of the infinite light in the Keter, which is above everything, to save her.

(! "#$%&) ,%# '( )*+ - And it is written (Devarim 5:24):

.!"# $% $& '$( )* +, +, )&+- - “…and you speak to us…” At the Giving of the Torah, the Jewish people asked Moshe to speak because they could not handle Hashem’s direct communication from the level of Keter. The ‘you’ (Moshe) indicates the level of Chochma, whose source is from the Shechina.

!

A Deeper Explanation !! The Zohar is explaining how chochma and bina are something like an intermediary between us and the light of the Keter, the Crown, which was revealed at the Giving of the Torah, in the 620 letters of the Aseret HaDibrot.

So too, Avraham and Sarah, chochma and bina, were intermediaries to bring this light of the Keter into the world, through establishing a root in Mitzrayim. Generations later this level of the Keter saved their descendants who were slaves in Mitzrayim.

While Mitzrayim had the opposing force of the kedusha on the levels of chochma, bina, and daat, they had no access to the Keter, because it has no opposite aspect on the Other Side. Thus, when Hashem revealed His Infinite Light through the Keter, with the 10th plague, Mitzrayim was completely subjugated, and our ancestors went out free.

A person should ask himself, ‘When will my deeds reach up to the level of the deeds of my forefathers, Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, that in their marriages they merited the high level of having the Shechina dwell with them in everything they did?”

The second verse is now explained:

!" #$%& ' !(! - This is referring to the Yovel year, the 50th year, the culmination of the 7 sets of the 7-year shmitta cycle, when there is rest for the whole world. This is the level of drawing from Bina, a higher state of rest that is above Malchut, which draws us into connection with the upper Shechina.

!

A Deeper Explanation !

Hashem planted into the world not only connection with His presence, with Malchut, the lower Shechina, but even with the supernal transcending transcendental upper levels of the upper Shechina. This means that a person can meditate in this world and fly up in the spiritual worlds and see what is going on there, and feel Hashem’s presence, and understand things inaccessible from here.

.! "#$ %& '%( )%* "+ ,- .'/0 - And it does not mention Shabbat, which is a light of chochma (source of the world of Atzilut), a time when everything is one, so there is no level of judgment that needs to be sweetened or given to another. But Yom Tov (Festivals) is a light of bina (source of the world of Briah), which is the root of separation. At the Festivals, giving to the poor is what sweetens the power of separation and reveals oneness. Or, in other words: Shabbat is all oneness and unity, like one complete picture, so not giving to another, even though it is great to give to guests on Shabbat, it is still not a defect. But on Yom Tov, there is no complete picture, just a collection of separate puzzle pieces that need to be put together. Thus, it is necessary for one to give to another, to fit the pieces together so that the picture can be completed. From amidst the diversity shines out the unity.

Through that, the bliss and the pleasantness from the surrounding lights and inner lights expresses. And this all comes about through eating the three meals on Shabbat, which are like three wires that must be connected in order for this goodness to flow into all of the partzufim of the sefirot and then to flow to the person and to the whole universe. The Light of the Zohar

What was decreed in the heavens regarding the prohibition of studying this wisdom in public applied only for a determined period, until the completion of the year 5250, and from then on we are in what is called ‘the period of the last generations’, and the decree was eliminated and permission given to study the Sefer haZohar.

And from the year 5300 it is a mitzvah min ha muvchar that the multitudes, great and small, should occupy themselves with the Sefer haZohar as it is taught in the Raaya Mehemna.

And given that through this merit and through none other will the Melech haMashiach come, we should not delay. And he who Hashem graced with the merit to study this wisdom will have a taste in this world of Olam HaBa. - Rabbi Avraham Azulai, Ohr haChama, Hakdama

Tefillah for After Learning the Zohar (to be said with deep concentration)

May it find favor before you Hashem my G-d and G-d of my forefathers, that what is written in the Torah should be fulfilled upon us now: "AndI have put my words in your mouth and I have covered you with theshadow of my hand," to elevate, to lift up high, and to fix the destructionand ruins of the Shechina HaKedosha, to the adornment and uppercurtain, and to the palace which sits on its foundation, to return the crownto its ancient glory and to fulfill for us what is written in the Torah: "Andthe light of the moon will be like the light of the sun and the light of thesun will be sevenfold the light of the seven days." And the merit of theRashbi HaKadosh and his son Rebbi Elazar, and Yotam ben Uziahu, tostand us up to fix the world from the day it was created until its end, according to His will and according to the ones who are in awe of Him.And in the merit of us being involved with this wisdom, bring the finalredemption through it, and sprout salvation quickly, for the elevation ofour powerful Shechina, quickly in our days. And to fulfill what is writtenin the Torah: "Elokim said, 'There is light.'"And the light of Hashem willshine on us. "On that day, Hashem will be One and His name will beone." Amen, netzach, sela, va'ed.

I am thankful before you, Hashem my G-d and G-d of my forefathers, that I merited to learn and to meditate in this sefer hakadosh, the highestsplendor. And may the merit of the Tannaim HaKedoshim, who taughtus their Torah, stand us and our offspring up, and that we will merit thepromise of the prophet (Yeshaya 59:20-21): "'And a redeemer will cometo Tzion, and for those who do teshuvah from willful sin,' says Hashem.'And for me, this is my brit with them,' said Hashem, 'my ruach that isupon you, and my words that I have placed in your mouth will not betaken out from your mouth, from the mouth of your offspring, and fromthe mouth of the offspring of your offspring,' said Hashem, 'from nowuntil forever.'" And He will fulfill for us the prophesy (Yeshaya 51:16):"And I have put my words in your mouth and I have covered you withthe shadow of my hand, that I should plant the heavens and lay thefoundations of the earth, and to say to Tzion, 'You are my people.'" Andthe bracha of Moshe, the faithful shepherd, will be revealed quickly tous, "Hashem alone will give us rest and a strange g-d will not be withhim. Our eyes will see and our hearts will be joyous, and our souls willexult with your salvation, in truth, with saying, 'For Tzion, your G-dreigned.'" Blessed is Hashem forever, amen, amen.

The Power Of An Hour: Making Time To Learn The Zohar"There is a great obligation, and subsequently a great reward, for studying the

Kabbalah. For study of the Zohar builds worlds, and if an individual is able to learn andunderstand the commentary of just one ma'amar, he will complete a tikun Above in asingle hour – what he would otherwise accomplish only in an entire year of learningp'shat." (Kisei Melech - Tikunei Zohar, 43)

"And for someone who is not well versed in the Kabbalah, and does not understand it,the study of the Holy Zohar, even by simply reading the text, carries the same value asif he studied the text in depth." (Kaf HaChaim, 155)

The above comes to teach us that if an individual learns Zohar for even one hour, andeven if he only recites the text, it is as if he studied the revealed Torah for an entireyear. And when he learns the Zohar with joy, he increases his merits by a thousand, asis written, "When a person studies with joy, it is a thousand times more valuable thenone who does not study with joy." (Orchot Tzaddikim, Gate of Joy)

As well, Rabbeinu Yosef Chaim, zt"l wrote, "One hour of Torah study on Shabbat isworth one thousand hours of Torah studies on a weekday." (Ben Ish Chai, ParshatShemos, second year)

How can one hour of study of the Holy Zohar on the holy Shabbat be equal to a millionyears of learning the p'shat on a weekday? Let us make the calculation: One hour ofstudy of the Zohar equals an entire year of studying p'shat, and on Shabbat multiply thatby 1000, and if the learning is done with joy, then multiply by another 1000. The finaltotal value of the learning is one million years, for only one hour of learning!

"And one should conduct himself in the following manner[learning according to the parshiot of the Torah] so that he willbe able to complete the Zohar HaKadosh and the Zohar Chadashand the Tikkunim every year. But if one learns according to theorder of the parshiot, sometimes he will find that it will take threeor four weeks to finish some long parshiot. Therefore it is properto fix the study of the Zohar and the Tikkunim so that he willcomplete around three pages every day, so that he will be able tocomplete all of the Zohar and the Tikkunim in one year’s time. After completing the three daily pages he will learn the books ofthe Mekubalim so that he will also be able to complete the studyof the sifrei haMekubalim. However, he will be careful tocomplete the study of the Zohar HaKadosh and the Tikkunimevery year as we mentioned before, and in this manner he willconduct himself all the days of his life."- Yesod v'Shoresh haAvoda, Shaarei haShishi - Shaar HaNitzotz

"Question: Is a Baal Teshuvah permitted to occupy himself withthe study of the Sefer HaZohar? Can he not repair his neshamawith the study of nigla [the revealed part of the Torah]?Answer: A Baal Teshuvah needs to occupy himself very muchwith the revealed aspects of the Torah and mainly with thehalachot in order to know the way he has to travel and the actionshe is required to perform, until he will be proficient in the lawsof the Torah, in particular the sections dealing with everydayconduct, specifically the section Orach Chaim of the ShulchanAruch, as the Chafetz Chaim writes in his introduction to theMishna Berura. The Baal Teshuva has a great level as it iswritten: 'In the place where Baalei Teshuvah stand, CompleteTzaddikim cannot stand there.' It is fitting for him to study theSefer HaZohar, and especially the selections of the Zohar thatappear in the Chok L'Yisrael, in order to purify his soul. Andhow good and comely it will be if this Baal Teshuvah will cometo the level of bringing merit to other Jews and will awaken otherBaalei Teshuvah to occupy themselves with the study of theHalacha and the Sefer HaZohar, and in this way the teshuvah ofthese Jews will be accepted by the Holy One Blessed be He."- Sefer Tikkun Olam
