Chairman’s Report

In my report last year I expressed the hope that a group of young adults would go to

Zomba in 2014 for a few weeks to experience life in Malawi and to relate to people in

their local communities. That hope became a reality when a team consisting of Lisa

Campbell, Rosemary Cooper, Lyndsey Gordon, Leanne Mark and Caroline

Patterson all former members of Kilrea Young Farmers Club, accompanied by the

Mayor, Cllr David Harding and Paul Snelling spent two weeks in Zomba. The Mayor

made an official visit to the Zomba City Council, and saw the projects that have been

funded by the Councillors and staff of Coleraine Borough Council over the past ten years,

namely the Coleraine Bridge, the Primary Health Clinic and improvements to the

community sports grounds. He handed over the cheque for the first phase of the Street

People Project. The team also visited a number of other projects supported by ZAP.

One of these projects was the building of an Orphan Care Centre, Ana ndi Athu, in the

village of Manyungwa. When they arrived the centre was almost completed and our

friends from Kilrea worked with the local people to put the finishing touches to the

building, making it an attractive learning and play area. The Centre was officially opened

the day before the team left to return to Coleraine. (see front cover)

We express our thanks to the Coleraine community and people from other parts of the

province and beyond, who continue to give generous support to the work of ZAP and to

We thank Councillors, Yvonne Boyle, Roisin Loftus and William King who are members

of the ZAP Management Board for their continued interest and support of the work of

the charity.

Coleraine Borough Council support the work of ZAP administratively and our thanks

are due to Mrs Karen Wallace and other Council employees for all the work done on

behalf of ZAP. We thank the Council for its grant for Community Development.

Lloyd’s Foundation for their generous grant. This

support has enabled ZAP to complete its eleventh

year of funding projects to help the most needy

people in the Zomba District.

The members of the Committees and Management Boards of ZAP have given their services

voluntarily for many years and I thank them on behalf of the Coleraine community. We need

more people to bring their vision and enthusiasm to the Church, Development, Education and

Health Committees in the coming years.

The Causeway Coast and Glens Council has been elected and the Transitional Council is

already meeting to plan for the commencement of the Super Council in April 2015. ZAP hopes

to make a presentation of its work to the Transitional Council in the near future. ZAP will ask

that the Causeway Coast and Glens Council take over the link with Zomba City Council and, as

Coleraine Borough Council has done, make use of ZAP to extend the link out into the

community in the new council and in Zomba.

I would also express our thanks to the members of the Committees and the Management

Board of ZAP in Zomba for all the voluntary work they do on behalf of ZAP Coleraine. Dr

Nellie Mbano, with her husband Zondiwe are Co-ordinator and Chairman respectively and

with Mr Benjamin Khoswe, the Treasurer, continue to facilitate the implementation of the ZAP

projects. They also work with Emmanuel International who implement our development

projects, the Ana ndi Anthu Orphan Care Centre being a good example.

This is the sixth year that a group of final year education students from the University of

Ulster have gone to Chancellor College for a few weeks and been allocated to secondary

schools in Zomba. They have also raised funds for some education and community projects

through ZAP.

This year we continued to send knitted items for children, spectacles, books, tools, learning

materials and other items in containers. The contents are much appreciated and reach

individuals who may not benefit from other ZAP projects. Our thanks to all who have

contributed these items.

In Malawi the cost of living has risen sharply over the last year. There has been a good

harvest this year and most of the people living in rural Malawi, about twelve million people,

who depend on the maize they grow, should have enough food for the coming months.

I would also say sincere thanks to my colleagues on the ZAP Management Board who

correspond with ZAP Zomba, who prepare reports, organise fundraising activities, prepare

this Annual Report and go on visits to Zomba. These activities increase our knowledge and

understanding of the situation economically and socially in the Zomba area and make us more

aware of the challenges our sisters and brothers face in providing for their families.

Finally we look to the future with confidence, believing that we will be able to continue to

work for the benefit of the most needy people in the Zomba District, and we trust that ZAP will

have a place in the new Causeway Coast and Glens Council.

Terry McMullan

ANA NDI ATHU Orphan Care Project was the largest project this financial year and also provided the opportunity for five volunteers to go and contribute practically and creatively to its completion. The volunteers said on return: 'Our fortnight working at Ana ndi Athu has helped us appreciate what a difference this orphan support centre will make to the children in the villages. The children were previously in a building that was in very bad repair; now they will receive nursery education in an attractive, (but basic) building; and they will receive a nutritious midday meal, prepared in the new kitchen. A new well and pump will provide clean water. So facilities for education, clean water and good food; that is how we have helped transform children's lives at Ana ndi Athu.' We thank all who supported this very worthwhile project

Extracts from a report made to the Management Board by

Paul Snelling, Secretary, after his visit to Zomba in April 14.

Overview: the visit was very positive in respect of the two new areas that

we focused on. These were:

(1) introducing the Mayor, Cllr David Harding, to Zomba City Council and ZAP’s activities;

(2) providing the five women with an interesting and informative experience of life in and around Zomba, an overview of what ZAP can do to help address the needs of people there and the opportunity to assist in the completion of the Ana Ndi Athu project. (see other references in Report.)

It was also helpful to have discussions about the Management of ZAP with

Nellie, Zondiwe and Benjamin and to attend the ZAP Zomba workshop.

Visits focused on what can be done to improve life in rural areas. We

thus saw goats, more goats, wells, bicycle ambulances, maize gardens,

tailoring and other projects.

Of particular interest was the cassava project (302/12) and the

irrigation project (319/13) both at Kimu Village. Both projects are

deemed to have been great successes; the cassava project has already

proved its worth by providing food despite the poor rains last year and the

irrigation project has provided two crops of maize in the first year, the

second crop capable of being sold at good prices when maize was in short

supply. The villagers have already extended both projects themselves,

having seen the positive outcomes of the initial projects.

Extracts Continued:

Emmanuel International introduced us for the first time to a women’s

group at Kachero. The group fulfils the desirable foundation of already being

proactive in developing their community so it will be helpful to have visited

the village, if they submit a project to ZAP.

We visited Malawi National Association for the Deaf (MANAD)

Community Based Organisation (CBO), It was both touching and inspiring,

as there were women at work sewing and men doing carpentry, both with

equipment sent out by ZAP and supplied by‘ Tools for Solidarity’.

At the School of Health Sciences, we saw the computers in use which were

bought by ZAP from CAMARA (who recycle computers) and then were

transported to Zomba in the container.

There was confirmation that a range of books were welcomed by schools that

had literally none but preferably educational books especially text books.

David Harding, Estella (ZAP’s Administrator) and I visited the Coleraine

Bridge; the Mother and Baby Clinic (now changed in focus to a Primary

Health Clinic, albeit including a mother and baby clinic) where Norriah

Affonso, who came to Coleraine under a Commonwealth Scholarship in 2008,

is still working; and the Community Sports Ground where the sports outfits

sent in past years are well used and more would be welcomed.

David handed over the ZAP cheque for the first phase of the Street People

Project to the Zomba City Council Chief Executive, Mr Ali Phiri. This was

prepared by Busta Chiona, who also was in Coleraine under a Commonwealth

Scholarship.

We also visited the Bwalo Initiative project, which is taking homeless

boys off the streets of Zomba and training them in a trade. Their efforts

to date and the sight of the boys were touching; they have extremely basic

facilities for 10 to 15 boys but hope to move to find better facilities soon.

The community centre at Kondanani,

is one of a number of Sub Sahara Family

Enrichment (SAFE) supported centres.

SAFE encourages early childhood

development, works with orphans and

vulnerable children and assists

grandmothers; the community will

benefit from the recent project

(354/14) funded by the Freda Algie

Memorial Fund

ZAP has been funding a number of

Adult Literacy classes and it was

good to visit communities and see

the classes in action. This is an

ongoing need as many adults never

had the chance of attending school.

Despite free primary school

provision there are many challenges

particularly for girls to attend

regularly and have the opportunity

of secondary education.
