ZTA prepares for upcoming informal recruitment

This year Zeta Tau Alpha will be taking part in the upcoming informal recruitment season. This

announcements comes after the sorority graduated 55 seniors last semester. Each winter the sorority participates in the annual formal recruitment along with the 14 other chapters located on the University of Maryland’s campus. This year will mark the first time in 5 years since the sorority took part in informal recruitment.

“We look forward to the less rigorous schedule of informal recruitment and are excited to expand our sisterhood,” Vice President III Angelica Giuliani said. Giuliani is responsible for all recruitment planning and preparations. Her job includes setting up and cleaning up for each party, designing themes and outfits, organizing dates and times and running recruitment trainings. would like to tour the house and meet the sisters. Unlike the three weeks of formal recruitment, informal will consist of three nights of small parties where girls can talk one-on-one with members. “This will allow us to show potential new members the personality of our sisters,” Giuliani said. “We haven’t done informal in 5 years so we need to refresh our skills.” Giuliani has created a plan to host recruitment-training days to assist in preparing the sisters. These trainings will focus on strengthening the chapters communication skills. “We have the potential to make this the best recruitment year in the history of Iota Omega,” Giuliani said. “I think it will allow us to build onto our chapter and start a new generation of Zetas at UMD!”

The “perfect Zeta” is defined as hardworking, sweet, optimistic

and always ready to tackle any obstacles that come their way. Last semester, ZTA decided that Rachel Schaefer fit this description and chose her to take over the newly executive position of philanthropy chair for the sororities philanthropy Think Pink.

MD: What big event are you planning for the fall?

RS: We are currently in the process of planning for October, which is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Month. We will have multiple smaller events during those weeks. Some of our plans include a volleyball tour-nament, yogurt eating relay contest, a flower release in the McKeldin foundation, and ribboning events on campus throughout the week.

MD: Do you reach out to alumnae for this event?

RS: Alumnae are strongly encouraged to attend our flower release on McKeldin Mall. Last year we had a few come out to the event. I work with our Alumnae chair to make sure they are all well informed.

MD: How will you promote the event?

RS: I have found that one of the best ways to promote these types of events is through Facebook in order to attract a large amount of students. I also plan to contact the philanthropy chair of each chapter via email or meet in person so that I can provide details regarding our series of events.

MD: What advice would you give upcoming Philanthropy Chairs?

RS: I would encourage philanthropy chairs to use the chapter’s resources and work with other positions as much as possible in order to plan and execute the event well!

Founders DayOctober 15, 1898, nine women at the Virginia State Female Normal School founded Zeta Tau Alpha on the ideas of loyalty, responsibolty, service, leadership and committment. Every year on Oct. 15, Zetas across the world celebrate the founders with a special ceremony. Along with the ceremony, this year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Iota Omega chapter at UMD. 5 Tips For A Stronger Sisterhood As October approaches, UMD will be

slowly turning pink in support of Breast Cancer Education and Awareness month. Each year, Zeta Tau Alpha turns the campus pink in an effort to educate students and staff members about breast cancer and their philanthropy Think Pink. To start their month long mission, ZTA plans to plant pink flowers inside the university’s trademark “M.” The goal is to grab the attention of those arriving on campus. Along with the “M,” they plan on tackling the most popular area at the university, McKeldin Mall. “The Mall is where everyone hangs out and relaxes between class,” Think Pink month committee member Rebecca Ginsberg said. “That’s where the most traffic is and where the most people will see our message.” The sorority is set to dye the Omicron Delta Kappa fountain, located in the center of the mall, pink. “It’s hard to ignore a pink fountain,” Ginsberg continued. “People will be talking about it and spreading our message.” ZTA will accompany the fountain by handing out “Think Pink” ribbons and answering any questions. To conclude their pink takeover, a large ribbon designed out of “Think Pink” flags will be set up on the Memorial Chapel field. This will be ZTA’s 10th year celebrating Breast Cancer Education and Awareness month on campus. Starting Oct. 1, ZTA hopes this will be their “pinkest” year yet and is excited to shine attention on a cause that is close to many sisters’ hearts.

1. Keep lines of communication open. Make sure all communication between members and those in leadership positions are clear.

2. Host sisterhood events. Sisterhood events can help to unite the chapter and remind everyone why they chose ZTA.

3. Ask questions. Ask the chapter what changes they want to see and if they have any suggestions.

4. Set goals. By setting goals for each semester, your chapter will grow as it works to reach those objectives.

5. Clear repercussions. Make sure to set clear guidelines for every member in the chapter to abide by.

The University of Maryland offers students the chance to study abroad almost anywhere in the world. Each year sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha take this opportunity to travel and broaden their education.

Chapter celebrates 25th anniversary

March 10, 1990, Zeta Tau Alpha was officially established on the University of Maryland’s campus. The Iota Omega chapter opened its doors and became the

216 ZTA chapter nationally. In honor of this anniversary, the women of ZTA will be hosting a banquet in Stamp to commemorate their 25 years. There will be speeches made from past and

present executive members along with video montages of the sorority through the years. Alumnae are encouraged to attend as well as present members of local chapters. Attire for the evening is formal, which includes long dresses and tuxedos. Dinner will accompany the presentations and there will be an opportunity to donate to the Think Pink Foundation.
