Whew!! Has it been hot and wet this summer, or what??? I think I speak for everyone when I say, I’m awfully glad that October has arrived! Two-thirds through the hurricane season and boy were their predictions ever wrong!! (I hope!)

We are heading into that time of year that drew us all into Estero to begin with: Fall and winter. It won’t be long until we feel that pleasant, slight chill in the morning air and some welcome relief from the summer humidity.

Soon, our Northern friends will be coming ‘home’ and will begin to plan all of the wonderful activities that we enjoy each year. We are well into the football season at every level. The fall sports of soccer, volleyball and golf are in full swing at FGCU and our Florida Everblades open their season on October 18th vs. Orlando.

Our Everblades special feature this month presents team captain and ‘face of the Everblades,’ Matthieu Roy. Matthieu was the league’s leading scorer last season and is returning for his 6th season with the Blades. Enjoy getting to know him.

We would like to welcome to Estero a new business, located in the ‘Jimmy Johns/ABC Liquor plaza on US 41, Estero Family Chiropractic. Dr. Larry and Dr. Jeff have a fresh approach to chiropractic care that I am sure you will fi nd most interesting.

Look on the website of Estero’s newest chiropractors and you’ll see a smiling baby lying on his stomach as Dr. Jeff Gorbach lightly adjusts his spine. One of the biggest misconceptions of chiropractic care is that

it’s only for people experiencing back pain, say Dr. Gorbach and his business partner, Dr. Larry Wallen.

Dr. Jeff and Dr. Larry, as they like to be called, have recently relocated from the Midwest to open their fi rst private practice in Estero. The former roommates at Palmer College of Chiropractic believe in chiropractic care for the entire family.

“Most people don’t know that 90 percent of births have injuries to the spine,” Dr. Jeff notes. “That’s the fi rst injury everyone has. Your spine protects your nerves, and your nerves control your health.”

Many conditions considered a “normal” part of aging, like aches, pains or even arthritis, can be eliminated through lifelong, preventative chiropractic care. Other health conditions such as asthma, heartburn, seizures, migraines, colic, high blood pressure and constipation may also be relieved.

Minor injuries from childhood can manifest as major health problems decades down the road. While traditional medicine tries to treat the symptoms through drugs and

surgery, chiropractic care helps the body do what it was designed to do, Dr. Larry says.

“With chiropractic, the body is healing itself from the inside out,” Dr. Jeff adds. “If there is a physical cause to any problem, the only real correction should be a physical solution.”

Even for those not experiencing any symptoms, Dr. Larry and Dr. Jeff recommend regular spinal adjustments as part of wellness care. They like their patients to stop in weekly, based on research which shows it takes just seven to 10 days to form scar tissue. It’s a healthy lifestyle choice, they say, like fl ossing your teeth regularly.

Although they tout the benefi ts of early chiropractic care, neither of the young doctors visited a chiropractor until

they were in college. Dr. Larry watched his father, a dentist, suffer from severe back pain, which eventually ended his career.

“I always knew there had to be a better way,” he says. In college, he experienced his own bout with back pain and sought relief through chiropractic care. It not only cured the back pain, it also improved his overall mood.

Now his dad lives in Bonita Springs and is being weaned off pain medications through chiropractic care.

“If I can help somebody keep their career, be more compassionate with their family, and feel better, that’s what I want to do,” Dr. Larry says. “I take a very natural approach when it comes to healthcare.”

Dr. Jeff also experienced the benefi ts of chiropractic care during his college years. Through regular adjustments, healthy eating and exercising, he lost 30 pounds and felt much better about himself.

The young chiropractors are eager to share their knowledge with students and community groups. They’ve lined up healthcare talks at Estero High School, and they conduct weekly “Health Talks” at the offi ce for new patients.

“We’re energized and happy to be here,” Dr. Jeff says. “Our goal is for people to leave our offi ce in a better mood, with a better state of mind, in better health, and just have a better day.”

NReturning for his sixth season with the Florida Everblades, team Captain Matthieu Roy has become the face of our hometown hockey team. And, a hairy face it is.

Returning for his sixth season with the Florida Everblades, team Captain Matthieu Roy has become the face of our hometown hockey team. And, a hairy face it is.



The clean shaven look isn’t something Roy does, and as the season goes on, the beard gets bushier. It’s a tradition in the playoffs for players to let their

whiskers grow, but Roy always has a head start.“Matthieu Roy never shaves, really, so by the

time the playoffs start, his beard is pretty long,” says Everblades Coach Greg Poss.

The mountain man look fi ts Roy, who hails from Amos, Quebec. “There’s nothing around except woods, fi shing and hunting and gold mines,” he says of his hometown.

And, of course, ice hockey. It’s the national sport of Canada, where every kid owns a pair of skates and is ready for the fi rst freeze.

“We pretty much play hockey before we’re walking,” Roy jokes.

He grew up with an ice rink two blocks from home. “I was there every night with my friends.”

Roy played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for three years before joining the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League), playing with the Pensacola Ice Pilots for one year before being picked up by the Everblades. He’s been a consistently solid player for the organization for the last fi ve years, Poss notes.

“He was leading scorer in the league last year, and he is an important piece of our puzzle,” Poss says. “In the last year and a half, he’s really kind of come into his own offensively.”

Roy was called up to play in the American Hockey League for three games with the Lake Erie Monsters last spring but returns to the Everblades this season. He’s reluctant to leave his second home of Estero, where he spends eight months of the year. His wife, Stephanie, visits often for a break from the harsh Canadian winters.

“Being on the same team for a sixth consecutive season in the ECHL is something that doesn’t occur very often, and I’m very grateful for that,”

Roy says. “Fort Myers is now my second home, and I’m lucky to know a lot of great people around here. I’m in a place where people like me, and I like all the young kids looking up to me.”

His favorite annual event is the Teddy Bear Toss, where fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice when the Blades score their fi rst goal of the game. The players then deliver the plush toys to young patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

In addition to his skills on the ice, Roy brings a quiet leadership to the team.

“He leads by example in practices and games,” Poss says. “He does the hard things like blocking shots and sacrifi cing himself for the team.”

Roy is entering his third season as team captain. He’s not the biggest talker in a room, but when he speaks, people listen, says Poss.

“I’ve learned a lot from a great organization and a lot from great veterans,” Roy adds. “That allows me now to be a great leader for all the new guys here, both on and off the ice. I like that role.”

When he’s not on the ice, he enjoys a good steak and a long nap. “I’m not shy to take a good nap in the afternoon,” he says.

but he says he’ll take one year at a time. The biggest highlight of his career thus far was brining home the Kelly Cup in 2012.

It’s a feeling he and his teammates hope to repeat this season.

“We have a real good mix of veteran guys and young players coming back this year,” says Poss.

When the NHL lockout ended last January, several of the Everblades players were called up to the big leagues, so the Blades fi lled in with college players. Many are returning for the 2013-14 season. The current roster also includes Matthew Pistilli, the No. 5 scorer in the league last season.

O’Had as assistant coach this season. Asst. Coach O’Had spent the last three seasons as head coach and general manager for the Florida Jr. Blades, achieving back-to-back national championship appearances and two Southeast Championships. He has worked with Everblades players for off-ice training and conditioning as vice president of hockey for Athletic Republic HQ.

A pair of preseason games are scheduled against the Orlando Solar Bears Oct. 11 and 12 at Germain Arena. The season home opener is set for Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m., also facing the Solar Bears. Find the complete season schedule online at www.fl oridaeverblades.com.


The Promenade at Bonita Bay once was considered the place to shop with its unique assortment of boutiques and relaxing European style setting. Following

the recession and what some say was mismanagement, a mass exodus took place a few years ago, leaving this once thriving marketplace a near ghost town.

This fall, The Promenade begins its comeback as a defi nitive destination in Southwest Florida. The resurgence is anchored by Nonna DeRosa’s Gourmet Market and Restaurant.

DeRosa’s is targeted to open in December and will be an 18,000-square-foot, meandering,

old-world style marketplace with multiple storefronts. The intertwined “shops” within DeRosa’s will include a deli, bakery, gelato and coffee bar, fresh market, butcher shop, seafood counter, pastaria, wine seller and gourmet gift basket center.

A 275-seat restaurant will serve authentic Italian dishes, incorporating homemade pastas and hearty sauces, just like “Nonna DeRosa” made. A Tuscan-

style patio bar and sitting area by the water is designed for relaxation.

The brainchild behind DeRosa’s is Francis Cuomo, who draws upon his Italian heritage as inspiration for the market and restaurant offerings. Cuomo grew up in a large family (one of 10 siblings), and was constantly surrounded by the savory smell of authentic Italian cooking. His mother, Rose Ann, will be helping out in the bakery, making her famous pies and cakes.

“It’s a lot of old, family recipes,” says Cuomo, who has degrees in both business and culinary arts and boasts more than 35 years in the food business. “In Southwest Florida, there is nothing like this. It’s authentic Italian with a tinge of international fl air.”

Cuomo said he is excited to help restore the prominence once enjoyed by The Promenade. The ailing retail center was purchased at auction by RLR Investments in July 2012.

“The owners are being diligent to make it a destination again and bring back the spark and the excitement of when it was fi rst developed,” Cuomo says.

Director Karen Johnson-Crowther. She predicts The Promenade will be full by this time next year.

“There really isn’t anything that has the same ambiance The Promenade has,” Johnson-Crowther says. “It’s cozy and unique. We’re not trying to compete with Coconut Point. We want to be an alternate type of shopping experience where you can get some unique, very high end products.”

Although DeRosa’s isn’t opening for another month or two, The Promenade is already starting to fi ll up. Johnson-Crowther says she gets calls daily. Kay’s on the Beach opened in September, and Signatures clothing boutique is scheduled to open later this month.

Signatures, which carries “trend-smart” styles for women in their thirties and beyond, started in The Promenade 11 years ago but relocated to The Mercato in North Naples two years ago when The Promenade became a ghost town.

“It killed us to leave,” says owner Patty DeMauro. “The Promenade is beautiful. It has a very European atmosphere and is very walkable.”

Signatures snagged a prime spot right next to DeRosa’s. DeMauro jokes her customers may need to buy larger sizes after sampling all the market and restaurant has to offer.

She and other Promenade tenants say the new owner, along with property manager Royal Shell Real Estate, is giving The Promenade the attention needed to become a premier destination again. RLR has invested thousands in repairs and improvements, including fresh paint, landscaping, and tile and roof repairs.

A plaza-style fountain sits near the east entrance for DeRosa’s, and a meandering stream fl ows through the development. Wade Lowe, general manager for Roy’s Restaurant, can’t wait to see more people strolling by his front door.

“We’re as excited as it gets,” he says of the

revitalization. “The more feet that are walking around, the better.”

Roy’s is among the few tenants who never gave up on The Promenade, anchoring the south end for 15 years. The restaurant offers “Hawaiian Fusion” cuisine, which differs from DeRosa’s niche. Lowe says there is a buzz among his regular customers, who are eager to sample the fresh market offerings of DeRosa’s.

He envisions The Promenade again becoming a vibrant place to shop and dine.

“A lot of the vacant spots will get fi lled as soon as DeRosa’s opens,” Lowe predicts. “The new owners are taking a lot of responsibility to see that it looks nice. They really want to make The Promenade what it was, if not better.”

Somewhere between stuffy formality and chain familiarity is where you’ll fi nd Pagelli’s Rustic Italian Grill. With its inviting location by the water at Coconut Point, this Italian eatery stands out for

quality and authenticity.If you haven’t been to Pagelli’s for a while, it’s time to

give the Tuscan grille another try. The new Executive Chef, Justin Fleming, is launching a revamped menu this month, adding 11 appetizers, four fi sh dishes, meat and cheese boards and homemade pastas.

“We’re making everything from scratch,” says Fleming. “It’s concentrating on the old school, traditional stuff. This is Old World-style cooking. All the sauces are handmade. Everything is cooked to order.”

You won’t be eating boxed pasta products. Pagelli’s recently purchased some 50-year-old pasta machines from Italy to make everything from ravioli to tortellini and gnocchi. “This is as close to handmade as you can get,” Fleming says.

Although Pagelli’s has been known for its outdoor entertainment (shared with neighboring Hemingway’s), Fleming no longer wants the singers to take the spotlight. The true star of the Pagelli’s experience is the authentic Italian cuisine.

“We’re focusing on artisanal ingredients, presented in a simple manner,” he says. “We want to be a quality place to eat that’s not pretentious. I want kids eating pizza sitting next to people eating stinky cheese (gorgonzola) and drinking wine.”

Live entertainment is still on the docket for Friday and Saturday nights, and the Pagelli’s large outdoor patio is perfect for tapping your toes while overlooking the water features and walkways.

Inside, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, inviting intimate conversations. For a truly unique experience, try Pagelli’s four-course Wine Dinner the last Wednesday of the month. Fleming fi xes a dazzling array of daring dishes not found on the regular menu, perfectly paired with vino.


01. Starters/ Bruchetta FlatbreadThere’s something incredibly sweet about Pagelli’s

bruschetta, which makes it stand out as a crowd pleaser. The tomatoes, garlic, herbs and Italian cheeses top a crusty bread, dribbled with balsamic vinegar. Also try the Margherita Pizza as a starter or entree. It’s especially kid-friendly with its tasty cheese blend and fresh basil.

02. Insalata/ Tuscan WedgePagelli’s offers one of the most fl avorful wedge salads

around. This lovely dish features a wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with crumbled gorgonzola, bruschetta mix and crispy prosciutto, all drizzled with creamy parmesan dressing and balsamic glaze. Salad lovers also should try one of Pagelli’s Artisan Chop Salads. The Pagelli’s Chop features a tasty blend of everything on the Wedge, with the addition of ham, eggs and artisan chips.

03. PASTA/ SAUSAGE RIGATONIA rich, creamy sauce slathers the homemade jumbo

tube pasta, bringing plenty of buttery goodness to this savory dish, made with Italian sausage, Romano cheese and sweet peas. Pasta fans also must try the Gnocchi Alla Vodka, a true treat for the taste buds. The tantalizing sauce for this seared potato pasta is a blend of garlic butter, vodka, pomodoro and alfredo.

04. ENTREE/ ANGUS TENDERLOINNew on the menu, this seven-ounce tenderloin fi let

is seared with a beautiful pink center, then drizzled with gorgonzola brandy demi-glace for a sophisticated taste. It’s not what you expect from an Italian eatery, but Pagelli’s has managed to rival a steakhouse. For those wanting to stay closer to traditional Italian cuisine, try one of Pagelli’s many veal dishes. The Veal Saltimbocca (literally translated: “jumps in the mouth”) stars scallopini atop a savory mountain of garlic mashed potatoes and topped with fresh sage.

Thrive recently received a boost from another Estero ministry, Light of the Glades Church.After nearly a decade, Light of the Glades found it necessary to disband for fi nancialreasons, says treasurer Michael James Doody.The board passed on a donation of $23,250bequeathed to the church by Helen Sourwineto be used in youth ministry.

Thrive intends to use the sizable donation for its Musical Education Department, purchasingan A/V sound system for the Praise andWorship Band, Roth says. He hopes the band will be leading worship in the FGCU ballroomby early 2014.
