According to the Keren Hayesod Law established in 1956,

the Prime Minister meets with the Director General of Keren Hayesod regularly to discuss the national priorities of the

State of Israel. We therefore gear our work

to these priorities.

Through educational initiatives, counselling and support, immigrants such as Alla & Oxana have become valuable and contributing members of Israeli society.

Alla and Oxana Antpinko made Aliyah from Latvia as part of the Naaleh program. Both served in the IDF as lone soldiers.

WOMEN’S DIVISION SUPER SUNDAY

Driven by Tradition, Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam, United Israel Appeal’s Women’s Division promotes Jewish women’s dedication to the survival, continuity and connection to Israel and the Jewish people. Through this Division, women in Melbourne can learn more about the needs of Israel and why they should donate to UIA.

We are currently working to build a small committee of women who are dedicated to strengthening the Victorian Women’s Division campaign. The committee will plan our annual campaign opening events, organize our annual pinning ceremonies where our major donors are recognized, and consider creative fundraising strategies to engage and involve a new generation of women in supporting the State of Israel. The Women’s Division is also considering repeating the successful Mission to Israel that was conducted in 2007 which took approximately 20 women to Israel where they saw the projects and initiatives supported by KH-UIA. If you are interested in participating in a Mission to Israel or becoming involved in this committee, please contact Charlene Miller on 9272 5533.

HAYLEY SOUTHWICK

On Tuesday 21 July, a morning tea was held in honour of long serving women’s division volunteer Ada Kagan on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Special Guest Speaker was Eli Yerushalmi, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Israel, Canberra.

ALWAYS BE A LEADER, NOT A FOLLOWERYoung UIA hosted a successful Major Donor Boardroom Lunch on Friday 19 June at the offices of Deutsche Bank in the CBD. Over 70 people heard special guest speaker Lindsay Fox relay his life history and work ethic. Fox mentioned that to be successful, “you have to be a leader, be upfront and ahead of everyone else. Anyone can be a follower and you will fall behind if you become a follower”. Fox also engaged the crowd by talking about his family history and connection to the Melbourne Jewish community.

PERSISTENCE IS THE KEY TO ANY SUCCESSJohn Gandel AO addressed an audience of Young UIA Major Donors at a boardroom lunch hosted by Deutsche Bank on Wednesday 19 August. Gandel relayed the 3 principals he lives by which has led to his success. The first is to seize the moment. Second, is the recognition of an unusual opportunity and the final one is to action a carefully thought out plan. He also discussed the importance of philanthropy, whether through giving or working for a cause. It is something that makes you feel good and gives you a sense of gratification. He emphasized the importance of supporting the UIA as a means for connecting to Israel and the Jewish community.

Partnership 2000 recently welcomed a delegation of 15 Year 10 students and a teacher from the Shitt im School in the Arava Region. After a week in Sydney, the students were hosted by Bialik College families in Melbourne. Students attended classes and participated in education programs at the Jewish Day Schools. They also enjoyed sightseeing in and around Melbourne. Partnership 2000 continues to strengthen the connection between the Australian Jewish community and the people of the central Arava region.
