FIFA World Cup Finals facts and figures Three World Cup Finals have gone to extra time and coincidentally involved the host team and subsequent winner: Italy’s defeat of Czechoslovakia 2-1 (1-1 in regular time) in 1934; England against Germany FR in 1966 when England scored twice in the added half hour to win the match 4-2 and finally in 1978 when Argentina and Netherlands were drawn 1-1 after 90 minute before the hosts eventually triumphed in extra time thanks to two goals.

Two Finals have been settled by penalty shoot outs and both involving Italy. In 1994 Brazil beat them to win the match after 120 minutes without goals. Italy were again faced with penalties after equalising 1-1 with France but this time the Azzurri secured match victory.

Germany FR-Argentina was the only Final decided by a single penalty.

The World Cup goal average is 3.8. Only one match, Brazil-Italy in 1994 was a scoreless draw. The Final with the most goals was Brazil-Sweden 5-2 in 1958.

On eight occasions a team that scored first in the Final did not continue its lead to win the title including Czechoslovakia who did so twice in 1934 v Italy and again in 1962 v Brazil and Hungary who were leading by a margin of two goals before being defeated 3-2 by Germany FR in 1954.

Uruguay are the only team to win a title even though their opponent was leading at half time. In 1930 they were down 1-2 after 45 minutes against Argentina before coming back in the second half to win the match 4-2.

After a long 32 years the Netherlands are back in the Final of the World Cup, the same time span that the Italians had to endure after winning their second title (1938-70). Only Argentina (1930-78) had to wait even longer.

The Netherlands are the ninth team to reach the Final after winning all of their matches. They also managed to equalise Brazil’s run of 6 consecutive World Cup wins set in 2002.

In the quarter-final against Uruguay on 6 July, Arjen Robben scored the 2200th World Cup goal.

The Netherlands have won all 14 of their matches of their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa campaign - 8 qualifiers and 6 final competition matches but they are also on a run of 25 international matches without defeat and have won their last ten games.

Wesley Sneijder is so far the top scorer of the tournament with five goals, together with David Villa. In the history of the competition only two players wearing the famous number 10 shirt were crowned top goalscorers: Mario Kempes (ARG) in 1978 and Gary Lineker (ENG) in 1986, with 6 goals each.

The Netherlands have never won a World Cup Final match which has gone into the added half-hour. After going the distance in a 3-0 first-round defeat by Czechoslovakia at the 1938 edition, the two-time runners-up lost 3-1 in extra time during the 1978 Final against Argentina. That was followed by a semi-final knockout on penalties at the hands of Brazil in 1998.

Legendary Dutch midfielder, Johan Neeskens, netted the fastest goal in a World Cup Final, converting a penalty after only two minutes into the match against Germany FR on 7 July 1974. The hosts went on to overturn the deficit and clinch the Trophy with a 2-1 win.

The Netherlands were the first association to lose two World Cup Finals in a row, 1974 and 1978 - both against the host team. Germany FR are the only other team to lose two consecutive finals finishing in second place in both 1982 and 1986.

In his playing days, coach Bert van Marwijk earned his one and only cap for the Dutch national team in 1975 against Yugoslavia, a match which the Oranje lost 3-0.

On 6 June 2009, Bert van Marwijk’s men became the first European team to qualify for the finals in South Africa after securing a 2-1 victory over Iceland in Reykjavik.

Spain are the fourth reigning European champions, after Italy in 1970 and Germany FR in 194 and 1982, to qualify for a World Cup Final.

Germany’s five lost semi-finals were against a European opponent: 1934 v Czechoslovakia, 1958 v Sweden, 1979 and 2006 v Italy and v Spain in 2010.

Spain are the eleventh team to reach the World Cup Final despite losing a match in the tournament. On three occasions these teams triumphed in the Final: Germany FR in 1954 and 1974 and Argentina in 1978.

The victory against Germany marked Spain’s fifth consecutive win in the competition, a first-ever for the team in its World Cup history.

Among the teams that have contested at least 30 matches in this competition, Spain have suffered the fewest number of expulsions. The only Spaniard to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup was centre-back Miguel Angel Nadal, 25 minutes into his team’s 2-2 draw with Korea Republic in 1994.

The only finals match in which Spain have gone the additional half-hour and won was their penalty shoot-out success over the Republic of Ireland in 2002. La Selección have lost two games on penalties (to Belgium in 1986 and Korea Republic in 2002), one more in extra time (to Yugoslavia in 1990) and drew with Italy after 120 minutes in 1934, before losing the replay.

Current head coach Vicente Del Bosque won a total of 18 caps for Spain between 1975 and 1980. The last was the 2-1 loss to Belgium in the opening round of the UEFA European Championship 1980.

Iker Casillas became the third goalkeeper to save two penalties in the World Cup but the first to do so in two different editions after saving Ian Harte’s penalty in 2002. Poland’s Jan Tomaszewski (1974) and American Brad Friedel (2002) are the other two keepers to have saved two penalties.

David Villa is the only Spanish player to have scored in four consecutive World Cup matches. With his strike against Chile on 25 June, David Villa became Spain’s all-time top marksman in the competition now with eight goals, overtaking four of his compatriots each of whom have scored five goals: Emilio Butragueno, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Morientes and Raul Gonzalez.

The two teams have played in nine previous encounters with four wins each and one draw.

Their first head to head was an unusual “silver medal match” won 3-1 by Spain at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic tournament after Czechoslovakia withdrew from the competition during the Final match against Belgium leaving a void for second place.

The last two matches between both teams were friendlies won by the Netherlands: 2-1 in Seville in 2000 and 1-0 in Rotterdam in 2002. On both occasions Frank de Boer, Bert Van Marwijk’s current assistant, scored a goal.

Spain have yet to win a senior level FIFA competition but did win the Gold Medal at the 1992 Olympic Football Tournament and have claimed victory in the 1999 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2000 and 2004 Futsal World Cups. Their list of titles also includes the 1964 and 2008 European championship and 1984 final participation; silver medal at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games; three finals and two third places in the FIFA U-17 World Cup and two times runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

As runners up of the 1974 and 1978 World Cup the Netherlands have achieved only one title at senior level in 1988 when they won the European championship. They have also three bronze medals from the first three Olympic tournaments in 1908, 1912 and 1920. Their best achievement at youth level was third place in the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Spain have conceded only two goals in their six matches on the road to the 2010 Final. In the past six teams reached the Final having conceded only one goal: Uruguay in 1930 (3 matches), Hungary in 1938 (3 matches), England in 1966 (5 matches), Netherlands in 1974 (6 matches), Germany in 2002 (6 matches) and Italy 2006 (6 matches).

In their six 2010 tournament matches the Netherlands have scored twelve goals compared to Spain’s seven. Italy has also scored seven goals in 1938 in three matches and England, seven also, in 1966 but in five matches. Three past Finalists recorded lower total of goals: Argentina with five in six games in 1990, Czechoslovakia six in five games in 1962 and Germany FR with six in six matches in 1986.

Height: 188 cm

Residence: London

Occupation: Professional referee

Mother tongue: English

International since: 2005

First International: Northern Ireland-Portugal (15.11.2005)

Fondest memory: UEFA Euro 2008 Final

Howard Webb, the son of a referee, began officiating football matches at the age of 18 and made his Premier League debut in 2003 with match between Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In 2005 he presided over the FA Community Shield game between Arsenal and Chelsea, whilst in November that year he officiated his first national team encounter, a friendly between Northern Ireland and Portugal in Belfast. The following year he was selected to referee at the UEFA Under-21 Championship, where he took charge of the semi-final meeting pitting Ukraine against the former Serbia and Montenegro. In 2007 he was placed in charge of the Carling Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea, refereed his first UEFA Champions League tie and took part in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, presiding over five matches including the semi-final between Austria and the Czech Republic.

Webb was selected to officiate at UEFA EURO 2008, where he covered two first-round matches. In 2009, Webb directed the UEFA Cup 2009 semi-final between Werder Bremen and Hamburg and was appointed to take charge of the FA Cup Final at Wembley when Chelsea beat Everton. He also officiated four matches at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2009, including a quarter-final match. He refereed three matches at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 in South Africa. Webb’s experience in foreign leagues includes 14 UEFA Champions League matches at group stage and the Superliga Cup final in Boston, USA, in 2008 which involved US and Mexican teams. Recently he was appointed for the 2010 UEFA Champions League final, Bayern Munich-FC Internazionale Milan.

Howard Webb is the fourth English referee in the Final, the first being George Reader in 1950 followed by William Ling four years later and John Taylor in 1974.

Webb’s grandfather played professional football in the English Football League and his father, Webb’s biggest influence, refereed at regional level. For Webb, the biggest challenge facing referees today is coping with the referee pressures when every situation and decision is scrutinised in detail.

Referee for the Third Place Final

Benito ARCHUNDIA Country: Mexico

Date of Birth: 21.03.1966

Height: 170 cm

Residence: Tlalnepantla

Occupation: Lawyer and economist

Mother tongue: Spanish

Other languages: English

International since: 1993

First International: USA-Greece (28.05.1994)

Hobbies: Playing football, physical training, playing video games, reading

Fondest memory: Friends made during tournaments

Benito Archundia made his debut at only 25 years, refereeing a match in the Mexican Primera Division.

Having joined the FIFA international list in 1993, he was immediately appointed to referee at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan, where he handled the semi-final between Nigeria and Poland. His first senior international fixture was in 1994, when he oversaw the match between the USA against Greece in New Haven.

In 1996 he was selected to referee at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he took charge of two matches in the men’s tournament and one in the women’s tournament. That same year he made his first appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, an event which he also covered in1996, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Archundia has participated in two editions of the FIFA U-20 World Cup: the semi-final between Argentina and Brazil in 2003 and in 2005. He has also been involved in two editions of the Copa América, in 1999 and 2007. At club level he has overseen last two CONCACAF Champions’ Cup finals.

He has featured three times in the FIFA Club World Cup: the final between São Paulo and Liverpool in 2005, the semi-final between Manchester United and Gamba Osaka in 2008 plus two matches in 2009 including the Final between Barcelona and Estudiantes.

Archundia’s first senior FIFA competition was the Confederations Cup in 2001, where he refereed the semi-final match between Australia and Japan.

His dream of officiating at a FIFA World Cup was realised in 2006 when he became the first referee to officiate in five matches during the same edition the most memorable match being the semi-final encounter between Germany and Italy,

As one of the most used North Central American referees he was nominated for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and has presided over FIFA World Cup qualifiers in three different confederations (AFC, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL).

The 2010 Third Place Final is Benito Archundia’s eighth World Cup match and he will therefore join France's Joel Quiniou and Uruguayan Jorge Larrionda as the referees with the most World Cup matches.

Archundias’ brothers are amateur referees, one at professional level. His son also plays in the 2nd Division of the professional league in Mexico. A lawyer and economist by profession, Archundia enjoys playing video games and has also practiced Taekwondo. His biggest ambition is to help the new referees in Mexico, CONCACAF and FIFA.
