Message from the General Manager

On behalf of the Waegwoltic Team and the Board of Directors, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new Members joining us for the 2014 season as well as all of our returning Members. Many times we hear members say that the Waeg is a place they feel is their “cottage in the city”. Often times we see members and their family here every day of the week and on some days, more than once! The culture of the Waeg is such that we have Members with 80+ years of membership under their belt and families who join the Club generation after generation - creating

summer memories that will last a lifetime. It is with great pleasure that we have the opportunity to host you and your families in 2014. We hope you enjoy every aspect of your time here at the Club and are able to take full advantage of what we have to offer.

With the start of a new summer season, it is also the start for the new Board to work with management to further improve the Club, enhance Member’s experience and provide a level of service excellence that is unmatched in the industry. To help achieve these goals, we will be utilizing the results from the recent Member Survey and Annual General Meeting to better prioritize our efforts. We are proud of what we have already achieved so far in 2014, yet we constantly strive to reach new heights of excellence, always remaining respectful of our proud Waeg culture.

As we enter into this new and exciting year, we sincerely welcome each of you to get involved with the Club. At the very least, always feel free to provide feedback on your Club experience to help us make adjustments as necessary on our journey of continuous improvement. Myself and the Board of Directors can be reached by emailing [email protected] or [email protected]. We also welcome you to join us on the first Friday of every session in the Club Lounge for a Social with the General Manager and President.

Again; thank you for joining us for the 2014 season. We look forward to another year of making the Waeg a regular part of your life and an active part of your family!

Warmest Regards,

Heidi Bennett [email protected] waegwoltica.ca

YOUTH: PROGRESSIVE PROGRAMMING Progressive Tennis has been a leading program in dominate tennis nations such as, Spain and France, where it has produced many junior and adult international champions. Now being offered at the Waeg, Progressive Tennis uses a systematic progression of court sizes, balls and racquets to modify the game to an appropriate level for younger players.

Moving away from the long accepted 'Graduated Length' method, Progressive Tennis is a more competitive game-based approach that facilitates success, but remains focused on the development of skill and enjoyment of play. All progressive tennis programs are offered in the Spring & Summer Sessions.

Le Petit Tennis Le Petit Tennis (LPT) is the first step in progressive tennis. In L.P.T, young athletes learn by using a series of games, small format courts with decorations and age-adapted equipment like large inflatable balls, lower nets, and bigger racquets. All equipment is provided by the Club.

Ace The ¾ court stage is the most important stage of this progressive development: the court dimensions are adjusted to have a similar ratio as a full court. This step facilitates the development of an all-court game style with net-play. The key is to develop the same tactics as full court tennis along with the associated fundamentals and techniques.

STAGE 6 & 7 – Set & Match Players will move to full-court play once they have a full repertoire of skills at the ¾ court level. This transition to full court tennis will take place in a two-step process. The first step will be with a transition ball, which provides a more lively bounce than the low compression balls previously used. This will help ensure longer rallies and more points. The final step will be using the regulation ball, on a full-length court. Please note: different levels, stages, and court lengths will be merged to accommodate the varying levels of athletes at this point in the program. To register for Match in the summer, players much have completed Set.

ADVANCED PROGRAMMING For those players who have completed the Progressive Tennis program or equivalent and are looking to further develop their skill set and game play, we now provide a range of advanced level programming. Focusing on both individual and team play, these programs are aimed at players who enjoy a more competitive setting.

r. Team Tennis

Being part of the Waeg’s Jr. Team Tennis program is as much about building your game as it is about building a team. When your child is ready to compete, there is no better way to start then with Jr.Team Tennis. Competing in Junior Tournaments with the Waeg Team will help take their game as far as they want to go – provincial, national or the pros. This year we are taking team tennis to the next level advancing players with skill & tactics performance training, physical & psychological conditioning and team building skills. All players are expected to be ambassadors of the club and will receive an embroidered Waeg tennis jacket to represent the Club at tournaments and practices. It is important to note, this program is for all players that are looking to start competing and is not for those who already play at a Provincial/ National level. Program Name Age Dates Day Time Location Fee Jr.Team Tennis 1 U11 July 1 – August 7 T,Th 3:30pm – 4:45pm Hard Courts $175 Jr.Team Tennis 2 U17 July 1 – August 7 T,Th 4:45pm – 6:00pm Hard Courts $175 High Performance Tennis This program is for competitive tennis players who have been competing at a provincial or national level, or are ambitious to start. WAEGWOLTIC SAILING SCHOOL At Waegwoltic sailing we focus on providing instruction in a fun, safe and positive environment. We strive to teach practical theory and on-water skills while emphasizing camaraderie and a passion for the sport. In 2012 Waegwoltic sailing, along with a handful of other maritime clubs, piloted Sail Canada’s new CANSAIL programming. An update to the Canadian yachting Association’s traditional white, bronze and silver programming, CANSAIL focuses on building fundamental sailing skills among all ages and skill levels in both single handed and double handed boats. The programming maximizes time spent on the water with sailors learning skills in a number of fun and challenging ways suited for their age and stage of development. It consists of six levels (CANSAIL 1-6) that are offered through our basic, advanced and racing programs. The CANSAIL program was a success in 2012 & 2013 and we are looking forward to the 2014 season!

REGATTAS & PARENTAL SUPPORT The racing and recreational streams both have different demands on the sailors enrolled and their parental support. These are important points to consider when deciding what to sign up for. Recreational sailors do not attend any traveling regattas. This means that the children will simply have to be picked up and dropped off at the Waeg around the same time each day. No additional transportation of children or equipment is required. With the racing stream, sailors will be attending traveling regattas. The amount of involvement, and the distance of travel varies by program and the regatta schedule. However, there will certainly be days (both weekdays and weekends) that sailors will be training out of other locations, including: Bedford, St. Margaret’s Bay, Chester, P.E.I etc. This is a necessary aspect of the program, and one that is usually the highlight of the sailor’s summers. To make this happen parental support and involvement is absolutely necessary. For more information please email [email protected] or call the Main Office 902.429.2824.

Beach Volleyball 2014

1

YOUTH BEACH VOLLEYBALL: RECREATIONAL PROGRAMMING Beach Volleyball is one of our most popular programs at the Waeg. The program is designed for a wide variety of participants and ranges from introducing beginners to the sport to fine-tuning the volleyball techniques of more advanced athletes. Our team of experienced, enthusiastic instructors strives to provide a productive and fun learning environment for new and upcoming volleyball players. Participants in the three recreational levels can look forward to energetic group activities, explanations and demonstrations of fundamental skills, movement and skill drills, and modified volleyball game-play.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The Waeg beach volleyball program is offering the chance for experienced, energetic athletes (14+) to pass on their passion for the game to the younger generation of players. During the recreational lessons (Monday to Friday, 1:30pm – 4:15 pm) all summer long, players have an opportunity to assist the coaching staff in running the class. This is a chance to gain volunteer hours, be a mentor to younger athletes and to develop coaching skills under the influence of our experienced staff. No coaching experience necessary! For every 45-minute class, we will be accepting 1-3 volunteers to assist in running drills and demonstrating skills along with other various coaching tasks. Interested?
