    10. Features of Graduate School

Miyazaki Prefecture where the UOM is situated is in southeastern of Kyushu, facing the Pacific Ocean, Blessed

with beautiful scenery and people as abundantly warm as the climate. Miyazaki is far-removed from the hustle

and bustle of life in the big city and is perfect place to study and strengthen ones expertise.

The UOM has four faculties: Education and Culture, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture, and graduate

schools (masters course and doctoral course).

Under our slogan, Look at the World, Start with the Community, the UOM will cultivate youth who are able to

respond to ever-changing times and societal needs.

The Graduate School of Engineering (GSE) is an advanced education and research institution in the field of

Engineering in Miyazaki. It aims to develop scientists and engineers with advanced expertise. The school has

produced 113 Ph.D.s in engineering and 2,658 masters of engineering. Special lectures in English are available

for foreign students. These alumni are expected to contribute to local community as well as to international

community as scientists, engineers, or researchers, who will play an important role in the dependent of science

and technology in the 21st century.

The GSE is concentrating on globalization. Graduate Course in Civil and Environmental Engineering has

accepted 29 central and local government officials from Indonesia, financed by JICA yen-loan project, and

conferred Master of Engineering to all of them in recent 5 years. Also, in order to meet an international need, the

International Education Center was established in 2012 for accepting foreign students and assisting their studies.

Besides the international education, the graduate school attaches great importance to energy and environment,

and the Research & Development Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering is promoting

    following research projects:

    14. Facilities and Cultural activities for International students

    (1)Student Dormitory

Most of foreign students live in the International House. Some students live in private apartment houses near

campus. Compared to the dormitory, the rent will be somewhat more expensive. However, living expenses in

Miyazaki are very low compared to many of larger cities in Japan. Besides, riding on a packed bus or train

everyday isnt required to live in Miyazaki.Right here in Miyazaki, it is full of natural environment, and you will

be able to live and study pleasantly. In the urban area, it is normal to take more than an hour to attend to the

university every day (using public transportation, of course). In Miyazaki, though, student can attend to the

university in about 5 minutes minimum. The student will be able to enjoy a fresh walk, instead of being

squished for an hour inside a packed train or bus.

We provide two International Houses (Dormitories) on KIBANA campus; one for single students, and theother for couples and families are available for foreign students for one year. Moreover, two more new

International Houses (for single) will be constructed. One is located within walking distance of 25minutes from

KIBANA Campus. It will be constructed by the end of March 2014. The other is located in KIBANA Campus. It

will be shared house, and it will be constructed by the end of March 2015. If you want to live with foreigners,

you should definitely live in either of the new International houses. Also, if the student is planning to rent an

apartment close to the university, Miyazaki is a great place to live with low cost. In large cities, the rent is very

expensive (especially the apartments close to the university), and the student must spend most of the

scholarship to pay the rent. However, in Miyazaki, the rent is so much cheaper than the urban area, so the

student will be able to enjoy the life in Japan without always worrying about money. Even if the student is

considering of bringing his/her family along, the family will be able to live easily under the budget.

    (2)Japanese Language Program

There is a Japanese daily conversation class for students who have never learned Japanese before. For

students who have learned Japanese in the past, there are classes where students are able to learn

Japanese/Japans domestic affairs. There are beginner, middle, and advanced class, and the student will be

able to choose the class from these three levels according to the students learning level.

    (3)Homestay Program

We will write a referral to Miyazakis International Foundation at the students desire for a short homestay.

    (4) Cultural Tour

We handle a study tour annually, where we present Japans (mostly of Kyushu area) history and culture,

in order to enrich students understanding of Japans culture and Japanese consciousness. Other than this

tour, we also handle a one-day tour and participate in a local festival.
