A DAY WITH YOU

it is more than just a day spent in front of the TV, destroying the house and eating a cold can of Spaghetti-O’s! With a

little planning, this packet and an adult ready for fun, mom’s time away can be a positive experience for everyone!

In this activity set, adults and kids can

enjoy a simple story that is appropriate for children ages one through five. We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by

Michael Rosen is a classic repetition chant with building anticipation that culminates with an exciting encounter

with a bear. The story is perfect for a dad to read with his children!

As a Speech Language Pathologist, I am

always interested in the language

development that will occur when I do an activity, so here is some of what your child will experience (you don’t even

have to tell them that they are doing a lesson!). Repetition of phrases and sentences builds reading comprehension skills. The descriptive phrases develop

understanding of proper word order and help children become more descriptive when they talk. Acting out the story

improves sequencing skills. Following directions during multiple activities develops listening skills and improves

following directions at other times! Math skills are developed during sorting tasks. Searching for a hidden bear develops problem solving skills. Your child will

experience these and so much more!

You guys are going to have a great day!

Make your time with the kids super special - something to talk to mom about when she gets home - by following these simple activities!

HAVE FUN WITH THE SILLY NOISES!

2. CRAFT TIME - BINOCULARS

Materials needed - paper towel tube cut or two toilet paper tubes,

construction paper strip, tape, stickers and markers.

Directions - Have your child decorate a strip of construction paper with

stickers, crayons, markers, etc.. Then, attach the tubes together with a strip of

construction paper and tape. Use these binoculars when you are on your bear

hunt!

3 . OUTSIDE GAME - BEAR HUNT

Materials - Teddy bear, blanket placed at the beginning of your “hunt”

Directions - Hide a teddy bear outside and act out the story using the ideas and obstacles that are in the book. You can go through a forest in your shrubs, swim through a baby pool or step in mud! You can pretend to swim as you walk down the sidewalk. Walk through imaginary mud on the driveway. Take a walk around your house and act out the story (any parts that you want) until you find the bear. Then go backwards through your yard until you end at the beginning and hide under the blanket! If you go for a hunt on the way to the park, you don’t have to run home!

4 . SNACK TIME!

Teddy Grahams are a quick and easy snack. Add in some fresh fruit and your

snack will be complete!

1 . READING TIME

Read the story... it all starts here. Most of the other activities need the

background of the story to make sense! This is fun, simple story that you can

make more fun by the sounds you make when the characters are walking

through the different places! We love to read the end super fast as they are

running from the bear. Have a great time with this book!

5. INSIDE PLAY - OBSTACLE COURSE

Materials - multiple copies of the paw print page.

Directions - You will be creating an obstacle course for your child. Using objects

around your house such as chairs, pillows, couches, etc... Place the paw prints in a

path for your child to follow! Have fun pretending to be lumbering bears! I like

to end the hunt with the teddy bear in a “cave.” You can then read the story

again or a new story about bears!

6 . GUMMY BEAR SORTING

Materials - Gummy Bear Sorting Chart (one for each person, including you

dad!), gummy bears

Directions - Using the attached chart, graph the colors of gummy bears that

each person has. Hand out a reasonable number of gummy bears and one at a

time sort the bears by color by placing them on the gummy bear chart. You can

count the bears, talk about which color has more or less bears and talk about

colors of the bears. Then enjoy eating the bears!!

7 . MORE TO EAT

Mom - write down what you want them to have for lunch or dinner!
