Jesus says in John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the

branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear

much fruit, because apart from me you can do

nothing.” I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

I’d like to think that I “abide in Jesus” and “bear

much fruit” all the time – continuously. But I don’t. I

get distracted, busy, anxious and pre-occupied. And

yet, there are those beautiful moments when my heart

is open and the Spirit whispers and I hear it and sense

the Divine Love moving in and through me, bearing

the good fruit of God’s kingdom in the world.

Prayer, meditation, journaling, worship, Holy

Communion, reading devotionals, listening to

Christian music, fellowship with others … all these

things help me “abide.” Here’s a poem about abiding

the Spirit put into my heart this week.

Abide in me, I will not die.

Believe in me and you will rise

above the fray, above the pain,

yet still within the deathly game.

My peace I give. Can you believe?

Reach out your hand, my love receive.

You try so hard to do my will.

Don’t overdo – sometimes, be still

Then I will come and fill your cup.

Look here to me, with me to sup.

Come and be fed – my life I give

that you may love and in me live.

BLESSING BUDDIES HELP OUT

Several of our Blessing Buddy pairs got together

Sunday, April 26, and assembled 21 Personal Care

Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Way to go! And

thanks to all who contributed items for the kits! After

that, the Buddies did some kite flying and enjoyed ice

cream sundaes. Thanks to Donna Parke and Patty

Kruse for

organizing

the event!

Old Business

a. LUGNuts update – Bonnie Scranton reported 97% of

the congregation responded favorably to the

Columbarium. The location for the columbarium will

be moved a few feet to the east to create more

separation between it & the playground. The layout

itself is not changing. The committee plans to

personally visit with the neighbors adjacent to the

columbarium to seek their support and answer their

questions. Dick Klusmeyer, committee member, will

make the required presentation to the city zoning and

planning commission the end of May. If the project is

approved by the zoning and planning commission it

will be taken to the city council for approval. Only

after all of these requirements are fulfilled will the

project be undertaken.

b. Strategic Planning – President Alan Steigelman

reported the majority of council members can attend a

Saturday retreat to discuss strategic planning on May

16. The council will review the current strategic plan,

recommend adjustments to the plan, develop a process

to gather information from the congregation, and

determine what questions need to be asked.

Page 3

c. Decal For Fellowship Hall Wall – The Lathrops have

the final design and will soon be ready to apply it to

the back wall.

d. Review Election Day Procedures – President

Steigelman asked Bonnie Scranton to write up the

election day procedures and timeline for the council’s

future reference.

New Business

to approve Joan Kammerlohr as a delegate to the May

6 conference assembly, and Ron and Joan Larner as

delegates to the Synod assembly in June carried.

b. Confirmation Camp Support – Motion made and

carried to pay the full registration fee for three young

men from our congregation to attend confirmation

camp at Augustana College this summer. The Youth

Fund will pay their camp registration.

c. Appeals – Pastor asked for council’s advice on

financial appeals to the congregation. The council

affirmed the way she has handled requests. The

following are upcoming all Lutheran appeals: LSSI

Sunday, April 26; LWR Personal Care Kits for

Blessing Buddies, Sunday, April 26, and the ELCA

Malaria Campaign in May.

d. By-Laws and Continuing Resolutions Committee–

Bonnie Scranton indicated the need to appoint and

activate the By-Laws and Continuing Resolutions

Committee. Bonnie Scranton, Kathy Wolters, and

Conny Bakker volunteered to serve on this committee

and to complete the task of having proposed

Continuing Resolutions written up by the August 2015

council meeting.

e. Council Membership – It is with regret that the

council accepted Brent Bigley’s resignation. The

position that Brent held is now declared as vacant. A

possible replacement was suggested to fill Brent’s

unexpired term until the next congregational meeting

in January 2016. It was suggested that the council

could be polled via email to approve the appointment.

Meeting adjourned and closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully Submitted by Kathy Wolters, Secretary

Christ Lutheran Church, Quincy:

Minutes of Electronic Meeting – April 19-21, 2015

On April 19, 2015, the council was asked by President

Alan Steigelman, via email, to reply with their email vote

on the appointment of Mathew Futhey to fill the unexpired

term of Brent Bigley on the church council, and that, if

approved, Matthew could begin his service with the May

12 council meeting. On April 21, 2015, President

Steigelman notified the council that a majority had voted

by email to approve Mathew Futhey to fill the council

vacancy.

COLUMBARIUM PROPOSAL TO GO

BEFORE CITY MEETINGS IN MAY

By Bonnie Scranton, LUGNut Chair

The LUGNuts (Land Use Group) met twice in April

in preparation for taking our proposal to the Quincy

Planning & Zoning Commission for approval.

At our first meeting we discussed the feedback from

the congregation, which focused primarily on the

proximity of the proposed columbarium to the

existing playground. It was agreed that the

columbarium and memorial garden, if approved by

the city, will be moved farther to the east.

Additionally, an aesthetically appropriate divider will

be placed between the playground and the

columbarium and garden.

The second meeting was spent preparing our

paperwork for the Commission. The application must

be filed by May 1 to be placed on the May 27 agenda.

We then need to notify 19 specific neighbors of this

project and inform them of their right to attend the

commission meeting to speak for or against it.

Dick Klusmeyer and Amy Lannerd are taking care of

the required application paperwork and preparation of

the letters. Dick and Bill Wolters will personally

deliver the letters to our four neighbors to the east and

the remaining letters will be sent via registered mail.

Dick will make the presentation at the Planning &

Zoning Commission meeting on May 27

The next LUGNut meeting will be scheduled for early

June. Date is yet to be determined.

MATT FUTHEY NAMED TO COUNCIL

Matthew Futhey has been appointed to

fill the unexpired church council term of

Brent Bigley, who resigned in April due

to increased work and family demands.

Matthew will serve until the

congregational meeting in January 2016,

when an election will be held to fill the

remaining two years of the term.

MAY 16: COUNCIL RETREAT

The church council will gather from about 9 to Noon on

Saturday, May 16, to review our three-year strategic

plan and make any needed adjustments. We will also

plan a process of gathering input from all members

through a series of interviews over the summer, in order

to guide future planning efforts. Another retreat will be

held this fall to consider all the input received.

2015 GARAGE

SALE SETS A

RECORD!

By Kathy Wolters

and Debbie

Hemmerle, Co-

Chairs

THANK YOU!!!!!

Because of you, we

unofficially raised

$3,763 – a record amount – at this year’s Super Duper

Garage Sale April 25. Each church member

contributed something to our cause, whether it was

donating a gently used item, baked goods, or simply

giving of time. We were able to raise over $3,763 to

be used toward needed property improvements and

this summer’s ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit.

This was truly a congregational wide effort. We could

not have done it without all of YOU! We had very

good attendance and lots of volunteer helpers. Our

committee plans to meet Monday, May 11 at 1 p.m. to

wrap up this year’s sale. Anyone is welcome to attend

and to give us feedback.

Thank you to our committee members: Judy

Wegehenkel, Pat Bell, Connie Hornsey, Judy Bach,

Bonnie Conover, Bonnie Cox, Joan Kammerlohr,

Joan Larner, Mary Reeve, Bonnie Scranton, and Char

Tooke. Thank you to Stu Bell and our Property Team

for their assistance with the heavy lifting and pick-up

and delivery.

We are blessed this year to receive a match of up to

$500 from Thrivent. Again we appreciate all of your

efforts and thank you to those of you who spent most

of last week at church on this project.

PLOTS WAITING FOR ADOPTION

By Mary Reeve

We need TWO MORE persons or families to “Adopt-

A-Plot” on our church grounds – all the rest have

been spoken for. Many thanks to all for your help!

Those who “adopt” are responsible for weeding and,

if necessary, watering your spot. Some go “above and

beyond” by purchasing plants,

flowers and/or mulch, trimming

bushes, redesigning beds, etc.

ANYTHING you can do is

appreciated. This is a great

opportunity for some good

exercise, enjoying the outdoors

and making our church home

inviting to all! If you would like to

adopt, contact Mary Reeve at 217-223-6925

CHANGES IN CONFERENCE PASTORS

Several of the ELCA churches in our area have

gained or lost pastors lately:

Pastor Brian “Pete” Hagglund began serving both

Christ Lutheran in Nauvoo and St. Paul Lutheran,

Fort Madison in February. This is a new two-point

arrangement that crosses state and Synod lines.

Pastor Colleen Winkler is serving Grace Lutheran,

Virginia, and St. John’s, Bluff Springs. She is a

newly ordained, second-career pastor who

previously was an engineer.

Pastor Mauricio Vieira has resigned from Trinity

Lutheran, Carthage. Pastor Rick Hertenstein of

Immanuel Lutheran, Basco, is the supervising

interim pastor for now, and the congregation is

finding supply preachers for Sundays.

St. Peter’s Coatsburg is being served on Sundays

by Brian Days, a Synodically Authorized Minister

(SAM) from First Lutheran, Beardstown, with

Rev. Linda Murray, of Immuel, Golden, as the

supervising interim pastor.

WITH GRATITUDE

From Linda Lewis & Family

Thank you for the prayers for

my broken arm and the passing

of my dad, George Gerdes. Our family thanks

you for the prayers of comfort and strength

through this difficult time.

HELP MAKE MALARIA HISTORY

During the month of May,

we will be lifting up the

ELCA’s Malaria Campaign.

Your help is needed.

Five years ago the ELCA joined

worldwide efforts to fight

malaria by launching the ELCA

Malaria Campaign. Our goal:

$15 million by 2015 to support

malaria programs of our

Lutheran companions and

partners. Today, we’re 90

percent of the way there. With

your gift now, you can be a part

of making malaria history.

Together, we have seen great

success, but we have more work

to do. More than 2 million

people have been impacted

through the ELCA Malaria

Campaign – their lives changed

for the better. Together, our

work has stretched into 13

countries throughout Africa. We have fully funded

our commitments to eight country programs with

positive results underway, but communities in five

countries still are depending on your support. Now is

the time to join with our Lutheran companion

churches and partners to fully fund the rest of these

programs and help stop deaths from this preventable,

treatable disease. We are almost there, but we can’t

do it without you.

There are FOUR ways you can give:

1. We will have a special offering basket in the

sanctuary for the Malaria Campaign on Sundays,

May 10, 17 and 24. Cash or checks to Christ

Lutheran with “Malaria Campaign” on the memo

line will be sent to the ELCA.

If you’d prefer to donate directly to the ELCA:

2. Donate online at www.ELCA.org/malaria/donate

3. Call 800-638-3522 during business hours.

4. Make your check out to ELCA Malaria Campaign

and send it to Evangelical Lutheran Church in

America, ELCA Gifts Processing Center, P.O.

Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009.

SUPPORT OUR

CONFERENCE

CYCLISTS AS THEY

PEDAL FOR A

PURPOSE!

Pastor Scott Egbers (left) from

First Lutheran, Beardstown,

and Dave Poland, a lay

minister from Nauvoo, will be

among a group of bicyclists

riding from Nauvoo to Springfield June 1-4, ending up

at the Central/Southern Illinois Synod Assembly just

as it opens on June 4.

This year’s ride, the fourth, will focus on supporting

the ministry of our two companion synods in

Madagascar. The cyclists hope to raise $30,000 that

will help fund a five-year plan to support the ministry

in Madagascar through training leaders,

building churches, and more. Along

the roughly 300-mile route, the

cyclists will stop at eight different

Lutheran Churches for meals,

presentations and nightly worship.

If you would like to sponsor Pastor Scott and Dave,

write a check to Christ Lutheran Church with

“Pedal for a Purpose” on the memo line and put it in

the offering or mail it to the church by Sunday, May

31, and Pastor Gayle will bring our congregation’s

donation along to the Synod Assembly on June 4!

VIRGENE GILKERSON MEMORIAL

BLOOD DRIVE JUNE 6

Judy Wegehenkel

Plan on this date, Saturday, June 6, 9

a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran

Church. Since we are honoring our

dear Virgene who was a Red Cross

volunteer for 65+ years we are hoping to do a super

duper job of blood donations. We also are looking

forward to seeing new faces of those who are not able

to help on week days. As you know, our garage sale

was a big success and we would like to follow that

with a fantastic blood drive. We will need some help

with setting up, lite refreshments, and taking down

after the drive. We will have sign-up sheets in

narthex soon. We look forward to a good turn out

and know Virgene would love to be here, she was a

real trooper. We have had less than 20 donors in the

past, it would be awesome to get at least 25.

Page 6

COMING EVENTS

By Bonnie Cox

Prayer Shawl will meet on Tuesdays, May 5 and 19 at

11 a.m. in the Bride’s room. We are meeting every

other week, or the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of

volunteering to sew some of the quilted lap robes. My

excess stash of material is getting depleted! Thank

you to all our volunteers for their time and donations.

Sunday April 26.. Since our beginning we have given

about 105 shawls/lap robes away.

perishable food items next

to your mailbox on May 9

of dividing into two tables where each group works

on two different cards then switch tables.

PLEASE HELP FILL THE CART AGAIN!

By Sue Hobbins

I was once again reminded why we give our food

gifts each month. Every month we put food in the

grocery cart at church and the first Sunday of every

month it is empty. That is what I see as we deliver

food to a pantry at the end of each month. None of us

alone can keep the shelves filled, but

together as a community we

are helping others be fed.

The shelves empty as fast as

we can fill them.

Thank you for your help and

for sharing your gifts with

others. You are doing a great job

of bringing an assortment of food and household and

personal products for distribution.

This month our food gifts will benefit the clients of

Luther Memorial Food Pantry. Please continue your

generosity to help those in our community who need

gifts of food. They especially need the gifts listed

below. If you would prefer to give cash, I would be

happy to do the shopping for you.

1. Protein items (includes baked beans, canned beans

for chili)

2. Canned meats (chicken, tuna)

3. Canned meals or boxed meals (chili, stew,

macaroni and cheese, any meals that have all the

ingredients in them)

4. Macaroni & cheese, spaghetti & spaghetti sauce

5. Soups, especially chicken noodle & vegetable

6. Canned vegetables, peas, potatoes

7. Canned fruit

8. Nuts (especially English walnuts, dry roasted

almonds, peanuts)

9. Bisquick (or similar mixes that make a variety of

dishes with little or no additional ingredients)

10. Fresh apples, potatoes

11. Small boxes of powdered milk & canned,

evaporated milk

12. Dry cereals

13. Paper products (toilet tissue, facial tissue, diapers)

14. Laundry detergent

15. Deodorant, shampoo, toilet soap

16. Cleaning products

17. Hotel size soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc.

18. Baby care products and baby food

BRIEFLY …

Congratulations to Phil Conover, who has been

named the recipient of the Quincy Exchange

back to 1919, the Book of Golden Deeds Award,

recognizes dedicated volunteers who give endless

hours of their time and talents toward making

their communities better places to live.

Congratulations to Carly Collison for passing

the Missouri Bar Exam! She just accepted a

communications throughout the

Central/Southern Illinois

Synod, the Synod office has

provided these facts for our

information.

The Lutheran World Federation

is an association of 144 Lutheran

church bodies with a combined membership of 72

million members in 79 countries.

Within the Central/Southern Illinois Synod, 36 out

of 130 congregations (27.69%) are part of a

parish. There are 14 two-point parishes, 1 three-

point parish, and 1 five-point parish.

The synod is sub-divided into 6 geographical

areas know as “conferences.” The names of the

conferences are: East Central; Northeast;

Northern; Northeast; Southern; and West Central.

The chief executive officer of a conference is

called a “dean.” The conference dean is a pastor

who is elected for a 3-year term and can serve for

two consecutive terms. Ours is Pastor Mike

Thomas from Trinity Lutheran, Macomb.

OPERATING BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS THROUGH MARCH 31, 2015

By: Bonnie Scranton

I am happy to report that we are in solid

financial shape at the end of the 1st quarter of

2015. Offerings are consistent with budget

expectations when we take into consideration

that $11,500 of 2015 pledges were pre-paid

in 2014. Expenses are slightly over budget,

but this is due to federal payroll taxes and

insurance payments that were made in

March.

On a related note, the last two 2014 capital

improvement projects (fellowship hall door

replacements and roof repairs) have been

completed and paid for out of the 2014 funds

set aside for those projects.

On behalf of all church council members, I

want to thank you for your continued

generosity in sharing your financial gifts as

we work together to fulfill God's mission for

this congregation!
