AN ANARCHIST LIFE˝!UMBERTO TOMMASINI: THE ANARCHIST BLACKSMITH˝!It’s a model story, an extraordinary adventure, a tale of revolutionary practice and tension, among anarchy and irony, simplicity, curiosity and vitality throughout the whole of Europe, its wars and the social struggles of the 1900s. A tale on how to live all in one breath, responsibly, diving into contradictions, "getting one's hands dirty", and still keeping one's balance between theory and practice.˝

It is the story of Umberto Tommasini, a blacksmith born in 1896 in Vivaro a small village in Friuli in the Italian Kingdom. It is the story of a migration to Trieste, Austro-Hungarian territory, of a socialist family made up of a father and 4 brothers. A family that already in Vivaro has stirred it up opening the first social library in one of the two rooms that made up the family house. Later Umberto throws himself into protest demonstrations, until he ends up enlisted in the Italian Army and then in Caporetto. First shooting up in the air hoping to miss the "enemy" and then spending time in the prison camps, he walks through the Great War, getting back to Trieste just in time to clash with the first fascist squads in heated and direct social uprising. He is one of the first to end up in political confinement, first in Ponza, and then in Ventotene. Here he meets antifascist characters such as Gramsci, Di Vittorio and Bordiga whom he treats as his equal, without any awe.˝

Umberto's story is at times epic, as in his runaway to his exile in Paris, or when finally his dream of a libertarian revolution comes true in Spain, where the people rebels against Franco's fascist coup d'état.˝

It’s here, in Barcelona, that Umberto finds his second home among the anarchic volunteers from all over Europe, next to the other antifascists elements: communists, socialists and liberals. However soon the dream of unity shatters and the dominant approach of the communists prevails, the revolutionary longings of the anarchists are crushed, ending up in repression and even in the killing of Camillo Berneri in the streets of Barcelona.˝

Umberto is forced to retreat, he travels back to France, again in exile, Confinement, and then again in Trieste. Here he continues to keep alive the torch of anarchy, in hard times for the movement, times oppressed by the domination of the Communist Party on masses and consciences. Until in 1968 libertarian attitudes and approaches re-emerge in the new generations. Together with these twenty-year-olds Umberto, already in his seventies, founds the Anarchic Group Germinal.˝

Beyond the charm of adventure and of Umberto's magnetic personality, we tell the story of a man of the people who experiences History on himself all in one breath and without compromises, and joins in bringing it about together with many others. Such immediacy, clearness, completeness and fullness of life make us wonder why is it that today such a life would seem so difficult.

E' un racconto d'avventura rocambolesca, una storia esemplare, di tensione e pratica rivoluzionaria, tra anarchia ed ironia, semplicità, curiosità, vitalità, attraverso l'Europa intera, le sue guerre e le lotte sociali del Novecento. E' un racconto su come vivere tutto d'un fiato, di petto, in maniera responsabile, calandosi nelle contraddizioni, "sporcandosi le mani", mantenendosi nonostante ciò centrati in un'equazione costante tra teoria e prassi.˝

E' la storia di Umberto Tommasini, originario di Vivaro, Friuli, Regno d' Italia, 1896, fabbro. E' la storia di una emigrazione a Trieste, territorio austroungarico, e di una famiglia socialista, padre e 4 fratelli, che già a Vivaro ha suscitato gli animi, aprendo la prima biblioteca sociale in una delle due stanze della casa di famiglia. Umberto a Trieste si lancia nelle manifestazioni di piazza, fino a finire arruolato dagli Italiani, e trovarsi a Caporetto. Tra spari in aria sperando di mancare il "nemico", ai campi di prigionia, attraversa la Grande Guerra, torna a Trieste in tempo per scontrarsi con le prime squadre fasciste in moti di piazza accesi e diretti. E' tra i primi a finire al Confino, prima a Ustica, e poi a Ponza e Ventotene. Qui incontra antifascisti del calibro di Antonio Gramsci e Amedeo Bordiga, con i quali si relazione da uguale, a tu per tu, senza timori reverenziali.˝

La storia di Umberto si fa talvolta epica, nella fuga verso Parigi in esilio, fino alla concretizzazione di un sogno, la rivoluzione libertaria tanto sognata che prende corpo in Spagna, dove il popolo si solleva contro il golpe fascista di Franco.˝

E' qui a Barcelona che Umberto trova una seconda casa, tra i volontari anarchici di mezza Europa, accanto alle altre componenti antifasciste: comunisti, socialisti e liberali. Ma presto il sogno unitario si infrange, e l'approccio egemonico dei comunisti ha il sopravvento, fino a schiacciare gli aneliti rivoluzionari degli anarchici e arrivare alla repressione diretta e all'omicidio di Camillo Berneri, nelle vie di Barcellona.˝

Umberto è costretto a ripiegare, fa il viaggio indietro, Francia, di nuovo esilio, ancora Confino e di nuovo Trieste. Qui, continua a tenere viva la fiaccola dell'anarchia, in tempi difficili per il movimento, oppressi dalla egemonia del Partito Comunista sulle masse e sulle coscienze.˝

Fino al riaffiorare, nel '68, di attitudini ed approcci libertari nelle nuove generazioni. Assieme a questi ventenni Umberto fonda la sede del Gruppo Anarchico Germinal, ormai settantenne. Al di là del fascino dell'avventura e del carattere magnetico di Umberto, raccontiamo un uomo del popolo che vive in prima persona, di petto, senza mediazioni di sorta la Storia, e contribuisce a determinarla, assieme a molti altri. Questa immediatezza, serenità, completezza, pienezza di vita ci pone domande sul perché oggi pare così difficile una vita simile.
