Jeff never quite knew what he wanted from life until he knew what he didn’t. After graduating college in upstate New York, he planned on
attending law school. A year behind a desk was just the medicine he needed. It wasn’t long after he traded in his suit for something a bit more comfortable.
Jeff was accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design where he received his Masters in Commercial Photography. He now runs a successful photography studio with his wife, Becky, in a beautiful 1920’s industrial loft.
To Jeff, photography has always been about light — it’s direction, intensity, and character. While his shooting style caters to his subject, it’s always light first. Composition, drama, and aesthetics just fall into place.
Jeff has never considered himself one type of photographer. While he primarily shoots weddings, babies, and families, he also enjoys editorial portraiture, architecture, and event-documentary work. Every time he shoots is a unique learning experience not only about visual
aesthetics but also about the world, people, and environment.
Jeff has been the head photographer for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and is going into his second year with the Atlanta Opera.
Working with some of the nation’s top musical talent has been a tremendous opportunity. Jeff has also had the pleasure meeting and photographing special guests Yo-Yo Ma, John Williams, Steven Spielberg, and Steve Martin. Capturing each performance in a new perspective makes each season really quite special.

Accomplished actor, director, playwright and Pinch ‘n’ Ouch Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Grant McGowen says
perhaps his biggest passion is teaching. He teaches the Meisner Technique at Pinch ‘n’ Ouch, and says it’s where he finds much of his inspiration.
Sanford Meisner was a legendary acting teacher who taught a long-list of famous actors. What else do we need to know?
In the 1930’s, Meisner was a member of the Group Theatre, which founded “method” acting in America. Among the group were Konstantin Stanislavski and young Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, who also later became renowned acting teachers. Meisner was a passionate actor and appeared in many productions.
How is he different from Adler, Strasberg, and other teachers?
His approach is about eliminating all the headwork and “bringing the actor back to his own emotional instincts and to acting that is firmly rooted in the instinctive. It’s based on the fact that all good acting comes from the heart, and there is no mentality.”
How did he define acting?“Acting is the ability to live truthfully under
imaginary circumstances.”He seemed to simplify a complex art form.
How did he do that?He used acting exercises to habitually
develop an actor’s natural ability to be a good actor, without over thinking, or manipulating and second-guessing themselves.
What sort of exercises?An exercise called the “Repetition” is used
to help actors listen and develop behavior that
is organic, not contrived and performed. It also teaches actors how to lose consciousness in themselves, which in acting, is a big battle won.
Meisner seemed to also teach a number of playwrights and directors, including David Mamet and Sydney Pollack? Why is this?
His teachings can be applied to all art forms. It’s about bringing the artist closer to the source where all organic creativity comes from, your impulses. The great playwright Arthur Miller once said of Meisner, “He has been the most principled teacher of acting in this country for decades now, and every time I am reading actors I can pretty well tell which ones have studied with Meisner. It is because they are honest and simple and don’t lay on complications that aren’t necessary.”
What does a typical Meisner class look like?I usually take a group of actors through
a quick warm up, then we get down to work. There is not a lot of talking, because actors learn better by doing. It’s a real workout for the actor that, over time, can really improve their natural ability to work on stage and screen. We eventually work on characterization, emotional preparation, working with a director, and now I offer an on-camera class.

TIME TRAVEL TO THE SMITH FAMILY FARM AT ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER
T he Atlanta History Center presents a new daily visitor experience at their 1860s Smith Family Farm. Through
the introduction of first-person interpreters, demonstrations, hands-on activities, a new open house tour, and a farmer working with the Smith Family Farm animals, this beloved History Center attraction becomes an authentic 1860s Working Farm designed to allow visitors to become time travelers to Meet the Past, seven days a week.
At the farm, guests interact with historic characters, including members of the Smith family; enslaved men and women who lived on the farm; farm neighbors; and other people during the Civil War. Presented in an authentic setting and based on historical documents and records from the Atlanta History Center’s Kenan Research Center, the living history characters share personal stories, perspectives, and highlights of what life was like 150 years ago in 1863.
As you get to know the residents of Smith Family Farm, you will truly experience everyday life as they demonstrate — and you take part in — seasonal activities and chores at the farm. This includes work by each of the men, women, children, and enslaved on the Working Farm, such as weaving, open-hearth cooking, blacksmithing, woodworking, basket weaving, sewing, washing clothes, natural dyeing, candle making, crop and garden planting, weeding, harvesting, or food preservation, including canning, pickling, and salting.
The animals at Smith Family Farm are the same breeds that were raised on farms in the Georgia Piedmont in the 1860s. Meet the newest additions — two adult Gulf Coast sheep and their two lambs, as well as the farm’s brood of chickens and a rooster.
New open-house tours encourage a leisurely exploration of the Tullie Smith farmhouse as living history characters talk about daily life on the farm. Daily tours operate from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM on an open-house format, meaning that visitors can enjoy the house and entire farm at their own pace and interest. Guided tours for groups of ten or more are available through the admissions desk.

I f you’ve ever wondered what it looks like behind the scenes of contemporary dance shows like Fox’s hit show So You Think
You Can Dance, you might find something very much like Project 7, with dancers rehearsing strenuously towards live, energized performances that take audience members on an entertaining, evening-length trip. Each piece of choreography is met with the dancers’ full commitment to the overall vision as they pour themselves into the style, passion and creative tone that define Project 7.
Currently in their sixth season, Project 7 is a one-of-a-kind professional contemporary dance company that continues to bring a heightened sense of movement with a commercial feel to Atlanta stages. Constantly pushing physical limits — traveling, reaching, turning, breathing — these dancers are athletes in every sense of the word. They are performers, leaders and educators in all disciplines of dance who give fully of themselves to achieve excellence in their craft.
Their newest upcoming show, SHE, choreographed and produced by director, Cherrise Wakeham, includes the full 11-member company and 1 guest performer to create a powerful all-female cast. The show will include ballet, contemporary and jazz disciplines, and will consist of five separate choreographic works, each reflecting various images of women in different contexts and relationships.
Pieces are specifically choreographed to play on the dynamics of the music selected and provoke the utmost sense of connection between dancer, audience and the surrounding space.
SHE is an acronym for Seek, Hope, Evolve. By seeking, we are always a student of life. By hoping, we remain open to possibilities. By evolving, we continue to challenge our perspectives. Inspiration for SHE comes from these three ideas as a means to empower the entrepreneurial potential for women in artistic endeavors such as dance. Capitalizing on women’s progress within various fields of dance as well as the broader scope of society, SHE highlights this growth with athleticism and strength in female form — including lifts, partnering, weight sharing, and physically demanding solo and group work.

Since its inception in the spring of 1985, Atlanta Sacred Chorale has grown from an enthusiastic volunteer choir to a nationally-
recognized ensemble of auditioned singers that is known equally for its technical excellence and its unparalleled choral artistry.
Throughout its development, Atlanta Sacred Chorale has maintained a consistent focus on celebrating and performing music drawn from the entire spectrum of sacred choral music. In addition to four benchmark concerts, the Chorale also hosts the Emory Community Choral Festival each year, joining hundreds of Atlanta’s most dedicated artists together on one stage to celebrate the art of choral music across generations. The $5,000 award is presented annually to only one American chorus that distinctly demonstrates artistic excellence, a strong organizational structure, and a commitment to outreach, education, and/or culturally diverse activities. Prior recipients include Dale Warland Singers, Chanticleer, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Los Angeles Master Chorale.
With the momentum building from a record-breaking season and this magnificint honor from Chorus America, Atlanta Sacred Chorale has resolved to broaden its scope with a grand new name: Atlanta Master Chorale. Following the success of past productions like The Ugly Duckling and A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Serenbe Playhouse’s
upcoming “Season of Change” kicks off with The Velveteen Rabbit, followed by A Walk in the Woods and Hair: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical!
“We are so excited to kick off our 4th season, and biggest to date,” says Brian Clowdus, Founder & Executive/Artistic Director of Serenbe Playhouse and Director of Velveteen and Hair. “We’ve assembled an excellent cast, creative and production team to make our “Season of Change” come alive!” The team behind The Velveteen Rabbit includes a brand new group of young Playhouse interns, rising star Sam Costantino, and KSU’s Coordinator of Design/Tech & Production Manager Jamie Bullins, who joins the team as Scenic and Costume Designer on both Velveteen and Hair. Also on board for both productions is acclaimed Dancer and Choreographer Bubba Carr, who has toured with several high profile celebrities, including Cher.
The Playhouse’s “Season of Change” will continue with A Walk in the Woods, directed by KSU’s Head of Acting Professor Harrison Long and featuring prominent Atlanta theatre actors,
Allan Edwards and Robin Bloodworth. The play centers on two superpower arms negotiators, a Russian and American, and their meeting in the woods of Geneva to negotiate nuclear disarmament. A poignant, political drama with a climatic outcome, this is an experience not to be missed!
Finally, the season will come to a close as Serenbe Playhouse presents their highly anticipated production of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. Set amidst a vast and glorious Wildflower Meadow, The Playhouse team gears up to recreate Woodstock and transport audience members back to a time when love, peace, and harmony reined. This is a monumental year for NBAF. Recognized worldwide for showcasing the very best of the art and culture of the African
Diaspora, NBAF celebrates 25 years of what has become part of an enduring international legacy. In observance of its Silver Anniversary NBAF is presenting an extended season with its three-month long National Black Arts Festival celebration, unlike any other, beginning July 6, and running through September 14, 2013.
The NBAF 25 National Black Arts Festival programming is focused on three major themes: Celebration, Family and Community, and Lead-ership. In addition to its well-known signature programs, such as the Legends Celebration, Pan African Film Festival and Family Day in the Park, NBAF will also feature programs in traditional and non-traditional settings, such as Unexpected Encounters pop up performances, provocative humanities programming, as well as online
offerings, providing more impact and greater accessibility for NBAF’s global audience.
Many of NBAF’s long-standing partners are joining in the NBAF 25 celebration as well with programs presented in conjunction with this year’s festival season — FunkJazz Kafé Diary of A Decade and Music Festival, Jazz at Ebenezer,
Crowns at Southwest Arts Center, and Black Arts in America (BAIA) Mobile Media Lounge™ installation and discussions.

A Choreographed Conversation About SPIRITUALITY
CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS BRINGING THE MAGIC OF DR. SEUSS “TO LIFE”
Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat is set to delight audiences this summer, making its Center for Puppetry Arts debut June
13 - July 28. The story features everyone’s favorite moments with Sally and her brother, their pet Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2 — and, of course, the story’s namesake, that famous Cat in the red and white striped hat! Zany fun and adventures abound in this memorable tale!
The classic children’s book was originally adapted and directed by Katie Mitchell for the National Theatre of Great Britain and was a smash hit in London. The show is now being produced across the U.S. and the Center for Puppetry Arts is thrilled to realize this delightfully funny story through puppetry.
Under the direction of Jon Ludwig, the Center’s team has been diligently working to create the puppets, scenery and props from scratch, faithfully adhering to the iconic Seuss style. Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat features overt puppetry, animation, and a whole bag of tricks to pull off the Cat’s daring feats. Performing the familiar characters are skilled puppeteers Dolph Amick, Aaron Gotlieb, Reay Kaplan, Rudy Roushdi, Amy Sweeney, and Tim Sweeney.
“We are having a blast adapting this excellent actor version for the puppet stage,”
said Jon Ludwig, director of the show and the Center’s Artistic Director. “Audiences will feel like they have stepped right into the book. I know that this was the book that got me reading and I can’t wait to share the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss with our audiences!”
Audiences are encouraged to read the book and then see it come to life on stage. After the show, the fun continues as patrons have the chance to make their very own Cat in the Hat shadow puppet in the Create-A-Puppet Workshop, followed by a visit through the Center’s museum exhibits.

LIFT Men. Dance. Life. Returns to the Woodruff Arts Center’s Hertz Stage for its 4th Season! This Year’s theme is SPIRITU-
ALITY, and focuses on the spiritual lives of men expressed through their choreography. Founder/Artistic Director Daryl L. Foster has assembled 10 of Atlanta’s most interesting and dynamic choreographers all among the best of the Atlanta dance scene. This years featured choreographers include Stephan Reynolds, Bubba Carr, Codie Wiggins, and Daryl L. Foster. New to the Atlanta area, Stephan Reynolds comes to us from Las Ve-gas where he has performed with Cirque du So-leil, and Celine Dion’s Dynamic Vegas show, and is taking the Atlanta Dance scene by storm with passionate, and innovative choreography that takes advantage of every ounce that each dancer has to offer. Dance industry veteran Bubba Carr, who counts among his long list of choreography and dance credits multiple tours with Cher and a recent tour with the band Jane’s Addiction, revels in a cerebral, and sublime approach to contemporary choreography, and is using LIFT to explore fresh new ideas on this years theme.
Codie Wiggins is taking the Hip Hop world by storm, and is one of the industries most
sought after artist. He is constantly pushing his
artistry to new
levels, and this year we can delight as he commands the two worlds of contemporary dance and Hip Hop to col-lide on stage while sorting through the power that for-giveness has on the spirits of men. Codie is hard at work with his convention/workshop ATLA, and choreographing and dancing for entertainment icon Usher Raymond. Finally, Artistic Director Daryl L. Foster offers a solo to Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9 no. 2, an excerpt from a larger work that he is preparing for a future project. The work explores a journey to spiritual freedom, and self-actualization. Dance Company had it’s beginnings in 1985. The uniqueness of Total Dance Company rests in the power of the Company to perform Modern, Jazz, African and their primary technique, Mojah. Mojah dance technique is a true blend of Horton Technique, Dunham Technique and West African Dance Technique. Ms. Axam has studied in the respective forms for 25 years under master instructors, in addition to her research at Princeton University, Rutgers University, and New York University.
