It’s easy when thinking of baroque music to lapse into the assumption that it all sounds pretty much the same. quite pretty. Nice. unthreatening. This festival sets out to shatter your assumptions and show the breadth and variety of baroque music. It showcases music written for specific groups of instruments, places secular music against sacred, and ceremonial against dance music. Come to a concert or two and you’ll soon see that far from being just nice, baroque music can be thrilling, angry, tragic and touching. You can also get involved and play the music yourself – if you’re an amateur musician, join us for our Baroque from Scratch event, or if you fancy exercising your vocal chords then come down on Saturday and tickle your tonsils with some Purcell choruses. and if you have a noisy toddler, then our always popular tots events on Saturday morning are the perfect way to unleash their musical talents! Whatever you choose to come to, there is one constant – the warmth, friendliness, expertise and musical brilliance of one of the world’s most distinctive ensembles, the orchestra of the age of enlightenment.
