What is Aging?
– Aging is the unfolding of Jing– Jing unfolds through movement (Yang)– Aging is Yang consuming Yin
Yang elements can be:– Physiological (e.g. Yang Qi) or– Pathological (e.g., fire toxins)
– The primary (not only) 8EVs involved in the process of aging are the Wei Channels

Characteristics of Aging Ovaries(slide taken from ovarian reserve seminar)
Lusterless and wrinkledDecreased in volumeIncreasing fibrosis with accumulation of scar and connective tissueReduced vascular network, sclerosis of vessel wallsIncreased apoptotic and necrotic cells

The Aging Ovary
Older ovaries show evidence of greater oxidative damage than those in younger womenFollicular depletion accelerates during the last decade of reproductive life

• Mitochondrial Dysfunction (could be physiological or pathological)– Decreased number of mitochondria– Increased mitochondrial density– Increased incidence of mitochondrial membrane rupture in granulosa cells
• Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) dysfunction– Increased frequency of dilated SER in granulosa cells (oxidative damage)– SER synthesizes lipids, metabolizes CHO, detoxifies drugs, attaches
receptors to cell membrane proteins• Golgi complex dysfunction
– Increase in dilation of golgi complex (oxidative damage)– Golgi processes proteins for secretion by the cell
• Increase in vacuole fraction– Vacuole functions include containing waste
• Overall follicle quality scores were NOT associated with age-related ovarian decline

Other Abnormalities Associated with Aging Ovaries
Increased meiotic non-disjunction in oocyte– Age-related damage due to oxidative stress– Reduced microcirculation around follicles– Hypooxygenation of preovulatory follicle
Deletions in mtDNAAcupuncture, herbs and nutrition can reduce oxidative damage, increase microcirculation to the ovaries, protect mtDNA and improve follicular oxygenation.

General Causes of Oocyte Aging: Deficiency and Excess
Deficiency– “Weakness” or “Deficiency” of DNA or cellular
structures (8EV)– Deficiency of Protective factors
Excess– “Excess” of insulting factors (e.g., oxidative stress)
(8EV+)Insulting factors can be:
– Endogenous (e.g., byproducts of energy production, etc.)– Exogenous (e.g., environmental toxins, microbes, etc.)
(c) 2007 Slide reproduced with permission from Seminar “Optimizing Ovarian Reserve”Lotuscenter.com/publications
8EV and Ovarian Aging
8EV can – Strengthen the Jing (including DNA and cellular
structures)– Release deeply held PFs (including environmental
toxins, microorganisms, etc.)

What are/are not the 8EV
8EV are the “vessels” or conduits of Jing– Jing is the fundamental material component of life
“Qi” Jing Ba Mai: – Why are they strange?
8EV “Meridians” are conceptual inventions
Chapter 27 of the Nan Jing:– “8EV are beyond the reach of the primary channels”.
Note: all of the 8EV share common points and/or trajectories with the PM
Are the 8EV present in an embryo?– Embryogenesis is the unfolding of Jing
Conduits of Jing must be present in an embryoWhere is Chong mai, etc. in an embryo?
“Strange” Channels– “Strange” because they have trajectories or aspects
(like other meridians), but no defined path (unlike other meridians)

8EV “Meridians” are only one strategy for accessing the true 8EV
Slowing Aging: an 8EV Perspective
Energetics of structural integrity comes primarily from the Wei vesselsWei vessels: – Maintain structural integrity (morphology)– Assist in the removal of PFs located at the Jing
level– Help remove scar tissue and other morphological
factors stagnating the Jing– Increase the longevity of cells
Yinwei Mai
Governs susceptibility to agingStrengthens integrity of Jing to protects from both exogenous and endogenous insultsGoverns time and the keepers of time (e.g., telomeres)
Prolongs life of ovaries.
Yinwei Treatment “Protocol” for Ovarian Aging
Consolidate and strengthens oocytesPair with Dai Mai (Tonification) for added effect on protecting DNA
Sample Point Prescription: Sp13(+), Kd9(+), Pc6, Pc7, GB1, KD7(+), Sp10(-), Sp6(+)
Note: Don’t need to use all of these points
Caution: Overtreatment may increase risk of non-disjunction
If pulses begin to deviate medially or new signs of stagnation develop you may have over-treated.
If so, treat Yangwei mai and pulses should balance.
Yangwei “Linking” Mai
Important for proper DNA replicationControls disjunction
Helps prevent aneuploidy (e.g., Down Syndrome)
Assists with removal of toxins and other PFs from the Jing level
Yangwei treatment protocol for Ovarian Aging
Sample point prescription for optimal disjunction: UB63(-), GB35(-), GB29(-), GB15(-), TH4, TH5(-), Sp 6(+)Caution: Overtreatment can deplete yin and destabilize Jing
Always assess the state of yin and blood during treatments. If deficiency begins to arise, stop treatment until yin stabilizes then continue.

Diagnostic suggestions for using Wei Mai
Pulses Simplified:Normal pulses should have a straight trajectoryDeviations are assessed from proximal to distal
Inward deviations: yinwei excess/ yangwei deficiencyOutward deviations: yangwei excess/yinwei deficiencyBoth Inward and Outward: treat both channels and treat the liver PMNeither Inward or Outward (i.e., no deviations): treat yinwei(+)
Case Study
Female42 y/oG3P0A35 rounds of IVF: 2 chem +, 1 fhb aborted due to trisomy 21
Hx: Smoker for 10 years (tobacco + cannabis), one glass of wine with dinner, stressful jobWDx: Advanced maternal age. Recommendation egg donor
Case Study
Pulses: rapid, flooding and deviated medially in the Lr position. Lu x diff, sl. Rapid. Kd choppy and rapid, Pc sl. Flooding and tightTongue: Red tip, swollen on the right side, yellow coating in the back with red papules visible.Inspection: nails had several dark vertical stripes. Luo vessels apparent at Sp 21 and Lr14.
Case Study
Dx: Lr fire. Yinwei excess (Yinwei trying to contain the heat)Tx: UB63, GB35, GB27 – St 28 (30hz for 10 min), TH3, TH5, Kd 10, Lu6– Drain Lr fireResult: After 6 treatments the choppiness and heat in the pulses began to subside but was replaced by an emptiness in the liver position. Pulse less deviated. Tx: kd7, kd9 – sp15 (2 hz for 5 minutes), kd10, pc7, Lu5Add herbal medicine: Han Lian Cao 9g, Nu Zhen Zi 9g, Fu Pen Zi 6g, Wu Wei Zi 6g, Zhi Ke 3g, Zhi Zi 4.5g, no alcohol for 3 weeksResult: After 3 treatments (3 weeks) the pulses filled out. Lu began diffusing, TH reduced, Lr not rapid.
Case Study
Tongue remained swollen on right side. Papules @ root became a dull red.Pulses: intermittently choppy at blood level in guan positionTx: Lr5 (bled), Lr 8, Sp9, CV9, CV4
Case Study
Result: After 8 treatments pulses completely balanced except liver pulse slippery and sl. Rapid. Tongue still swollen on the right side. Requested patient stop alcohol completely. After 4 more treatments pulses normalized with only a slight deviation in guan remaining.

REI allowed for another IVF following acu and resulted in a healthy pregnancy. No change in quantity of follicles, but quality of embryos improved dramatically.During pregnancy Tx: kd 9 moxa (ibuki 1 cone), Lu5, Lr8 for 1st trimester. Amnio was normal.
