Introduction 3
Contents
IntroductionBlack History Month (BHM) is an annual celebration throughout October that acknowledges the importance of African Caribbean culture and history, using a number of events, such as dance, music, film, theatre, talks, workshops and much more, designed for all age groups.
BHM has been celebrated widely around the world since the 1920’s, with the United Kingdom starting their own celebrations in 1987.
In Bristol, the month of October is about bringing together the many different ethnicities that make up this multicultural city, and a chance to celebrate their contributions to society together, no matter where you live in the city.
Every year we use this opportunity to promote knowledge and understanding of Black History as well as circulating positive information and light on such a diverse community. BHM has also helped to raise awareness of Black people and the significance of their cultural heritage, all helping to shape a modern, inclusive multicultural Bristol.
This year we have tried to include more information on the accessibility of event locations for people with disabilities. However, if you would like more detailed information on access please visit the website at www.bristol.gov.uk.
Thank you to all those who have put on events and helped create this programme. We hope that you will enjoy celebrating this exciting month with us and we encourage you to take the challenge of extending these events beyond October.
A message from the Mayor…As Bristol’s elected Mayor it is a pleasure to support this year’s programme of great events celebrating the rich and diverse culture that African Caribbean communities bring to the City.

Created by the Malcolm X Elders theatre company.
That was then, this is now... welcome to TheNow!
For our 30th birthday, and the opening of the newly extended acta centre, acta has brought together community performers from across
the City to take a wry and light-hearted look at the world of 2015 and the last 30 years. If you’re nostalgic for big hair and Wham T-shirts, frustrated at dealing with modern technology, or just fancy a fun night out...
Come share your moments, stories & experience on exploring the themes of being “the Outsider”. Then see it played back by the Black Women’s Playback Theatre Company using drama, music and song. Come join us and watch improvised theatre for an entertaining afternoon.
For more info, call acta on 0117 9532448 Or visit www.acta-bristol.com

Everyone deserves a healthy future
Make your voice heard
Take a look at: www.yourhealthyfuture.org Watch our animation too and have your say!
Let us know what you think of the plan between 3 September and 25 November 2015
#yourhealthyfuture Telephone: 0117 976 6600 email: [email protected]
We asked the public last year if these services could be improved
We listened to this feedback and made a draft plan of the way children and young people’s community health services could look in the future
Children’s community health services are changing...We have been looking at the way
children and young people‘s community health services are working for you and seeing if we can make them better
Now we need your opinion - let us know what you think

Thanks to the Young People’s Reference Group for working with commissioners and Healthwatch and also for helping design this poster. The characters featured are based on, and created by, young people from the group.
Did you know? Bristol City Council is calling on more
Bristol is a multicultural city with people from many different ethnicities, cultures and religions and the children that come into care are equally diverse.
We make every effort to place children who need a foster family with carers who can reflect their ethnicity, meet their religious and cultural needs and enable them to stay within their community. But we can’t do this without you. Bristol City Council is calling on more Black, Asian and minority ethnic people to consider fostering.
What does a foster carer do?
In Bristol there are children from many different ethnicities requiring short or long-term fostering as well as disabled children needing short breaks. Some young people will be unaccompanied asylum seekers from countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Eritrea. To meet the needs of these children we particularly need Black African, Black Caribbean, Mixed Heritage, Muslim and Asian carers.
What does a foster carer do?Foster carers are ordinary people who are willing to open up their hearts and homes to provide care to other people’s children. For many different reasons these children are unable to live with their own family at this point in time.
Some children and young people need to live in foster care for a short period of time whilst others need a home for a longer period.
If you would like to join our fostering family and support and
care for a local child, contact us on 0117 353 4200
