Prenderò in prestito pensieri e parole tratti dalle righe iniziali del saggio

“La Leggerezza”, prima delle cinque stra citate “Lezioni Americane” che

Italo Calvino, se non fosse morto prima, avrebbe dovuto tenere

all’Università di Harvard durante l’anno accademico 1985-86. «Dopo

quarant'anni che scrivo fiction, dopo aver esplorato varie strade e compiuto

esperimenti diversi, è venuta l'ora che io cerchi una definizione complessiva

per il mio lavoro; proporrei questa: la mia operazione è stata il più delle

volte una sottrazione di peso; ho cercato di togliere peso ora alle figure

umane, ora ai corpi celesti, ora alle città; soprattutto ho cercato di togliere

peso alla struttura del racconto e al linguaggio. In questa conferenza

cercherò di spiegare - a me stesso e a voi - perché sono stato portato a

considerare la leggerezza un valore anziché un difetto», così scriveva

Calvino.

Leggerezza. Sottrazione di peso. Un valore anziché un difetto. Parole che,

senza dubbio, raccontano della volontà di non sovraccaricare la realtà

circostante e le istanze prodotte dall’attività intellettuale e creativa, in ogni

loro potenziale manifestazione, di pesanti e artificiose sovrastrutture.

Semplicemente, perché già pienamente significanti. Espressioni compiute

del sé. Asserzione ancor più vera se riferita alla categoria del “bello”,

secondo Platone uno dei tre generi supremi di valori, assieme al “vero” e al

“bene”. Questa pubblicazione vuol essere, più o meno consapevolmente,

poco importa, null’altro che espressione di tale pensiero. Narrazione,

iconografica e testuale, dell’incontro tra due entità che fanno della

leggerezza, intesa alla maniera appena citata di Calvino, un carattere

pregnante del loro modo d’essere e quindi di manifestarsi (continuando a

far riferimento al pensiero di Platone, secondo cui il “bello” è espressione

del “bene” se muove i suoi passi illuminata dalla categoria del “vero”).

L’isola di Capri, da un lato, con l’eterea levità dei suoi orizzonti che

uniscono in un unico sguardo cielo e mare, infiniti e liberi. Con il connubio

armonico di forme morbide e colori delicati. Con l’intrecciarsi delle piccole

stradine che corrono lente tra le case basse e bianche. Con l’eleganza

semplice della sua Piazzetta, salotto icona dell’isola e simbolo di

of the five, famous, American Lessons. The master Federico Fellini used

to define it “a spirit’s category, the right opposite of superficiality”. The

Capri Island, with the ethereal lightness of its places, and the idea of

elegance of Cesare Attolini, with the harmonious lines of his clothes, are

ineluctably permeated by it.

I will borrow thoughts and words by the opening lines of the essay “The

Lightness”, first of the famous five “American Lessons” that Italo

Calvino, if he hadn’t died before, should have exposed at Haward

University during the academic year 1985-1986. “After 40 years that I

write fiction, after having explored different ways and made

experiments, it is time that I find a global definition of my work; I

would propose this one: my operation has been most of the times a

subtraction of weight; I have tried to take it away from human figures,

to celestial bodies and cities; moreover I have tried to take it away to the

structure of tale and to the language. In this conference I will try to

explain - to myself and to you – why I considered lightness a value

instead of a defect”, this is what Italo Calvino wrote. Lightness, Weight

subtraction. A value more than a defect. Words that without any doubt,

tell about the will to not overload reality and the instances produced

by the intellectual and creative activity, in every their potential

manifestation, with heavy superstructures. Simply, since they already

are meaningful. A line that is even more true if referred to the category

of “beautiful”, according to Plato one of the three supreme gender of

values, together with the “truth” and the “good”. This publication is

meant to be, more or less consciously, nothing more than an expressions

of that thought. Narration, iconographical and textual, of the meeting

between two entities that make of the lightness, intended at the way

that Calvino did, a pregnant character of their way to be and to appear

(continuing to refer to Plato’s thought, according which the “beauty” is

expression of the “good” if moves its steps brighten by the category of

quell’italian lifestyle che, a partire dagli anni Sessanta, ha affascinato il

mondo intero. Con l’incanto di via Tragara e dei giardini di Augusto, da

cui si possono osservare, monolitici e impalpabili allo stesso tempo, i mitici

Faraglioni. Con la disinvolta raffinatezza di via Camerelle, un concentrato

in pochissimi metri di boutique dei più prestigiosi luxury brand

internazionali, che tuttavia riesce a manifestare di sè nulla di pomposo e

ridondante. Insomma, con quella sua unica capacità di essere un

luogo/non-luogo dove è possibile godere in maniera immediata, semplice,

leggera appunto, del bello in ogni sua forma. Cesare Attolini, dall’altro,

con quell’attitudine tutta sua di saper conferire alla figura maschile

un’imago fluens tanto agile quanto armoniosa. Con quella sua capacità

distintiva, che nasce nel lontano 1930 dalle intuizioni mirabili che

condussero Vincenzo Attolini a creare la prima giacca destrutturata per poi

perfezionarsi con la sapiente maestria di suo figlio Cesare, di saper dare vita

a capi, le giacche anzitutto, caratterizzati da un’accezione di eleganza

lineare, discreta, morbida eppur piena di carattere. Niente fronzoli inutili,

nessuna nota stonata, piena rinuncia al ricorso a stravaganze che lasciano

il tempo che trovano. Una leggerezza che si traduce concretamente nella

straordinaria esperienza di indossare un capo che “pesa” poco più di una

seconda pelle, capace di far sentire chi lo indossa assolutamente a proprio

agio. Caratteristiche che nascono da un senso estetico raro, privo di

qualsiasi tipologia di zavorra stilistica, oltre che da una sapienza sartoriale

unica capace di conferire a ciascun capo una raffinatezza consapevole e

mai ostentata. Ed è inevitabile, allora, fare un salto indietro nel tempo

rievocando il celebre episodio in cui, proprio passeggiando per le stradine

di Capri, il celebre, elegantissimo, Duca di Windsor, sempre e solo

abbigliato sino ad allora con abiti cuciti da sarti inglesi, s’innamorò di una

creazione di Vincenzo Attolini. Al punto da fermare il passante che la

indossava per chiedergli di chi ne fosse la paternità. Mi piace immaginare

che, proprio respirando ed ammirando la pregnante leggerezza estetica dei

luoghi capresi e della giacca destrutturata indossata con piena sensazione

di libertà da quel passante, non abbia potuto resistere alla tentazione di

sottrarre i pesi strutturali delle sue giacche di scuola britannica per

convertirsi a questa nuova, elegante e leggera allo stesso tempo, imago

fluens forgiata in casa Attolini. Ieri come oggi e, certamente, domani.

that Italian style that, starting from the 60’s, has fascinated the whole

world. With the enchantment of via Tragara and of Augustus’s gardens,

from which can be seen, the mythical Faraglioni. With the casual

refinement of via Camerelle, a concentrate in a few meters of boutiques

of the most famous international luxury brands, that anyway appears

not too stately and luxuriant. In short with its ability to be a place/no

place where it is possible to enjoy in an immediate, simple and light

way, the beauty in all its shapes. Cesare Attolini, with his attitude to

give to the male figure an imago fluens as agile as harmonious. With his

distinctive capacity, that born in that far 1930 by the great intuitions

that led Vincenzo Attolini to create the first unstructured jacket to then

improve with the wise skill of his son Cesare, to give life to clothes,

moreover jackets characterized by a simple, discrete, soft elegance and

yet full of style. Without useless frills, no wrong note, full renounce to

meaningless extravagances. A lightness which is translated by the

extraordinary experience of wearing a clothe that “weights” as a second

skin, capable to make feel comfortable everyone who wears it.

Characteristics born by a rare esthetic sense, without any stylistic dead

way, and by a unique sartorial skill capable of giving to each clothe a

conscious and never flaunted refinement. And it is so inevitable, to

make a step back into time evoking the famous episode in which, just

walking trough Capri’s streets, the famous and super elegant, Duke of

Windsor, since then dressed only with English suites, fell so much in

love with a creation of Vincenzo Attolini to stop the men who wore it

asking him the name of the tailor. I like to imagine that, just breathing

and admiring the pregnant esthetic lightness of Capri places and of that

unstructured jacket wore with a feeling of freedom by that passerby, he

couldn’t resist to substrate his structural weights from his English

jackets and convert to this new, elegant and light imago fluens made by

Attolini. Today as yesterday and, surely, tomorrow.

Maestosi simboli di epoche passate, silenti testimoni dei tempi che furono, sfarzosi

custodi di eterne meraviglie. Le ville capresi raccontano una storia di grandiosa

opulenza, popolata da personaggi illustri che scelsero la piccola perla del Golfo di

Napoli per farne la propria residenza privilegiata. Come Villa San Michele, abitazione

"aperta al sole e al vento e alle voci del mare" di Axel Munthe, uno dei personaggi più

famosi di Capri. Medico svedese appassionato di archeologia, il dottor Munthe scelse

uno dei luoghi più panoramici, come i ruderi dell’antica cappella di San Michele ad

Anacapri, per costruire la sua dimora e il caso letterario dell’anno: correva l’anno 1928

quando il filantropo di Oskarshamn, piccola località della costa baltica, pubblicò con

successo “La Storia di San Michele” trasformando la struttura in una delle attrazioni

più visitate dell’epoca. Non meno affascinante la storia di Villa Lysis, manifestazione

esemplare dello stile liberty di inizio novecento. Costruita per volere del Barone

Capri’s Villas, Mediterranean Homes. Capri, land of gardens, sea, citrus and wild and

free nature. But also an island rich in architectonic beauties that, like precious gems,

get set in the landscapes giving to this place a timeless charm.

Magnificent symbols of ancient times, silent witnesses of the past, princely keepers of

eternal marvels. Capri’s villas tell a story of great opulence, populated of famous people

who choose the little pearl of the Neapolitan Gulf as their favored home. Like Villa San

Michele, an home opened “to the sun, the wind and the sea’s voices” of Axel Munthe,

one of the most famous personality of Capri. A Swedish doctor, with a passion for

archeology,who choose one of the most panoramic place, as the ruins of the ancient

San Michele chapel in Anacapri, to built his residence and the casebook of the year: it

was the 1928 when the philanthropist of Oskarshamn, small locality on the Baltic coast,

successfully published “The History of San Michele” turning the building in one of the

per scrittori e artisti dell’epoca. Gli ospiti venivano accolti dalle quattro imponenti

campeggia la scritta “amori et dolori sacrum”, ossia “ sacro all'amore e al dolore”. Ma

è il salone principale, dove domina la scalinata che conduce al primo piano, ad aver

ospitato negli anni gli amici del Barone, eclettico dandy e viveur dell’epoca,

immortalato tra le pagine del romanzo “L’esule di Capri” di Roger Peyrefitte.

Baron Jacques d'Adelsward-Fersen, the villa soon became a meeting place for artists

and writers of the time. Guests were welcomed by the four massive ionic columns finely

decorated and by a lintel on which, still today, stands the written “amori et dolori

sacrum”, that means “sacred to love and pain”. But it is the main hall, where dominates

the staircase that leads to the first floor, to have hosted in years baron’s friends, eclectic

dandy and ancient viveur, immortalized in the novel “Capri’s Exile” by Roger Peyrefitte.

Carlo Angelo Talamona, il grande architetto italiano del primo Novecento, ne era

assolutamente convinto: il paesaggio caprese andava rispettato e non aggredito con

colate di cemento. L’unicità dell’Isola Azzurra risiede proprio nella natura che

domina incontrastata, regalando allo sguardo scorci meravigliosi dove la macchia

mediterranea mostra il suo volto migliore. Ma non solo la vista può godere di tanta

bellezza. Anche l’olfatto. Non appena si giunge a Capri, infatti, si viene catturati

dall’intenso odore del mare incontaminato, esalato dalle profonde acque blu scaldate

dal calore del sole. La salsedine si imprime nelle forme lignee dei gozzi attraccati

nel porto, per poi penetrare dolcemente nelle narici. Passeggiando tra le strette vie

si giunge nella Piazzetta, luogo di incontro per turisti e residenti grazie ai raffinati

bar da dove si libera l’intenso aroma del caffè. Proseguendo tra le stradine che

attraversano l’isola, si viene poi rapiti dall’aspro odore degli agrumi. I rami degli

of the Neapolitan Gulf. Because the enchanted Capri’s landscapes not only conquer

the sight but, thanks to their natural fragrances, gratify also the olfaction.

Carlo Angelo Talamona, the great architect of the first twentieth century, was

absolutely sure: Capri’s landscape has to be respected without covering it with

concrete flows. The uniqueness of the island lies in its dominating nature, that gives

to the eyes wonderful paths where the Mediterranean soil shows its better side. But

not only the sight could enjoy of such beauty, but also the olfaction. When you arrive

in Capri, indeed, you suddenly get wrapped up by smells of the uncontaminated sea,

exalted by the deep blue water warmed by the sun. The saltiness gets impressed in

wooden shapes on fishing boats docked in the port, to then slowly penetrates into

the nostrils. Walking trough the small streets you arrive in the Piazzetta, meeting

place for tourists and inhabitants thanks to its refined bars from which comes an

alberi si colorano di sfere gialle e arancioni che sprigionano l’inconfondibile profumo

di arance e limoni. Continuando il percorso olfattivo ci si trova immersi nei variopinti

giardini di Augusto o di Villa San Michele. Qui i sensi si perdono nell’esplosione di

fragranze floreali: bucanville, rose, violette, ciclamini disperdono tutt’intorno le loro

delicate note aromatiche. E non è un caso che qui, lungo il viale che conduce ai

giardini augustei, sorge l’antica fabbrica di profumi di Carthusia. Leggenda vuole,

infatti, che nel lontano 1380 il Padre Priore della Certosa di San Giacomo, per

omaggiare l’arrivo della regina Giovanna d’Angiò, raccolse i più bei fiori dell’isola

e li lasciò macerare nell’acqua per tre giorni. Al momento di buttarla il monaco venne

rapito dalla fragranza emanata da quel liquido: nacquero così i profumi della flora

caprese, silenti testimoni di una natura libera e selvaggia, preziosi custodi della

straordinaria ricchezza della macchia mediterranea.

buncaville, roses, violets, cyclamens scatter all around their aromatic notes. And it is

not by chance that right here, along the street leading to the Augustus’s gardens,

raises the ancient scent’s factory Carthusia. According to the legend, in fact, on the

1380 the Prior Father of San Giacomo Certosa, to celebrate the arrival of Queen

Giovanna d’Angiò, picked up the most beautiful flowers of the island leaving them

to macerate in water for three days. When the monk was about to throw it away got

fascinated by its smell: in this was have born Capri’s flora fragrances, silent witnesses

of a free and wild nature, precious keeper of the extraordinary richness of the

Mediterranean soil.

“Non conosci Capri se non l’hai vista dal mare” , questo il consiglio, quasi un monito, che gli

abitanti dell’isola suggeriscono a quanti vi approdano per la prima volta attratti dalle sue

innumerevoli bellezze. Depositari di un rito arcaico, che sa di leggenda, i marinai e pescatori

locali hanno trasformato questo paradiso del Mediterraneo nella propria ragione di vita.

Sostentamento e tradizioni, spesso tramandate di padre in figlio, hanno nei secoli caratterizzato

il lavoro di chi, quotidianamente, sceglie la via del mare sfidando con coraggio abissi e intemperie.

Sarà il fascino dei tipici gozzi capresi, intrisi di ricordi e di salsedine, o saranno forse le suggestive

leggende popolari così vive nell’immaginario collettivo, ma il lavoro dei marinai, qui più che

Capri’s boats. Legends, myths and traditions. They are the stories and the memories of people

living by the sea to give us an inedited vision of Capri, full of mystery and romanticism, like the

one that, for centuries, has distinguished the work of fishermen and sailors.

“You don’t know Capri if you didn’t see it from the sea”, this is the advice, almost a warning,

given by the island’s inhabitants to all the people who come here for the first time attracted by

its many beauties.

Keepers of an archaic ritual, tasting like a legend, local fishermen and sailors has made of this

Mediterranean paradise their own raison d'être. Sustenance and traditions, often passed on

from father to son, has for centuries characterized the work of who, every day, choose the sea

protagonisti, da quelli sui pescatori corallari, figure eroiche imbarcate nel ‘600 su piccole feluche,

agli spiriti, temuti dagli uomini di mare, che infestavano le acque cristalline della Grotta di

Gradola, nota oggi come Azzurra. Abituati a vivere l’isola e le sue acque dai riflessi color

smeraldo, i pescatori rappresentano e raccontano, ancora oggi, un punto di vista differente, fatto

di silenzi e solitudine, di baie incantate, profondità marine e relitti dimenticati, molteplici in

questo tratto di mare. Come i resti delle imbarcazioni di epoca romana, trasformate in dimora

per pesci e fauna marina, o quelli di infauste missioni nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale.

Lontano dalla mondanità e dal vocio della terra ferma c’è tutto un mondo da esplorare, fatto di

storia, cultura e scenari mozzafiato ma soprattutto di sensibilità differenti, esperienze di vita,

testimonianze e ricordi come quelli di continua a tramandare “la canzone del mare”.

fishing boats, full of memories and saltiness, or maybe it might be the suggestive popular legends

so alive in the collective imagination, but sailor’s work, here more than everywhere else, is

synonymous of pride, romanticism and mystery. Just as the myths and stories in which they are

protagonists, from the one about coral fishermen, heroic figures embarked during the ‘600 on

small boats, to the spirits, feared by sea men, who haunted Gradola Grotta’s cystalline waters,

better known today as Azzurra. Fishermen, used to live the island and its emerald waters,

represent and tell, still today, a different point of view, made of silence and loneliness, marine

depths and forgotten wrecks, not hard to find in this sea stretch. Like the ruins of roman boats,

turned into home for fishes and faunas, or those one about unlucky mission during the World

War II. Far from the spotlight and the confusion of solid ground there is a whole world to

explore, made of history, culture and breathtaking scenarios but above all of different sensitivities,

life’s experiences, testimonies and memories of people who keeps passing on the “sea song”.

Era il primo secolo a.c. quando i romani si accorsero di questa piccola

isola circondata dalle acque blu del Golfo di Napoli. Così

l’imperatore Tiberio non esitò a trasformare il punto più panoramico

di questo luogo nella sua maestosa residenza, conosciuta come Villa

Jovis. Da allora l’architettura caprese ha subìto l’impronta romana

che si è tramandata nei secoli attraverso i celebri colonnati. Elementi

tipici delle case mediterranee, queste strutture abbelliscono gli

ingressi delle ville e offrono alla vista suggestivi scenari. Nella Certosa

di San Giacomo gli archi a tutto sesto in pietra calcarea sono

sostenuti da ampie strutture cilindriche da cui prende vita il chiostro

grande con le celle monastiche, fulcro dell'antico convento. Il chiostro

piccolo, invece, con le cinque arcate in lunghezza e quattro in

larghezza, fa affidamento su colonne decisamente più esili e decorate

con capitelli di età romana e bizantina. Ma la Capri che si ammira

oggi è anche il frutto delle sperimentazioni di fine Ottocento dovute

agli architetti europei – soprattutto tedeschi, scandinavi, francesi –

che scelsero l’isola come tappa obbligata del loro tour di formazione.

Dapprima il fascino esotico del luogo fece scaturire costruzioni

improntate all’Orientalismo. In seguito però si recuperarono i temi

It was the first century B.C. when Romans noticed this small Island

surrounded by the blue waters of the Neapolitan Gulf. So the

emperor Tiberius didn’t hesitate to make of the most panoramic

point of this place his majestic residence, known as Villa Jovis. Since

then, in centuries, Capri’s architecture has always kept the roman

sign passing it on through the famous porticos. Typical elements of

Mediterranean homes, these structures embellish the entrance of

villas giving to the sight suggestive scenarios.

In the San Giacomo Certosa the round arches in calcareous stone are

carried by great cylindrical structures from which takes life the big

cloister with monastic cells, fulcrum of the ancient convent. While

the small cloister, with its five arcades in length and four in width, is

supported by thinner columns decorated with roman and byzantine

capitals. But the Capri we admire today is also the result of the

experimentation of the last nineteenth century made by European

della classicità, rendendo omaggio ai resti archeologici e alla memoria

di Tiberio, ma anche lo stile mediterraneo fatto di linde case bianche,

emblema di un’antica saggezza popolare. Da qui muove i suoi passi

l’architettura moderna del primo Novecento. Come l’affascinante

dimora Villa Lysis, progettata dal pittore e architetto Edouard

Chimot, pura esplosione di stile Liberty. Il pianterreno si apre con un

pronao poggiante su quattro colonne e preceduto da un'ampia

scalinata, ad imitazione di un tempio classico. Le dorature del salone

rimandano a Klimt, Olbrich e alla "secessione viennese" mentre i

particolari decorativi della ringhiera dello scalone si rifanno ai

virtuosismi dell’Art Noveau. Piccole abitazioni e grandi ville

imperiali: in questa peculiare alternanza architettonica risiede

l’unicità paesaggistica caprese che attraverso tetti, facciate e preziosi

ingressi, racconta una storia che si perde nei meandri del tempo.

the exotic charm of this place gave inspiration for oriental style

buildings. Later, they will take back classical themes, celebrating the

archeological finds and Tiberius memory, but also the Mediterranean

style made by clear white houses, emblems of an ancient popular

wisdom. From here starts its journey the modern architecture of the

first twentieth century. Like the fascinating Villa Lysis residence,

pure explosion of Liberty style. The groundfloor opens with an

atrium standing on four columns and anticipated by a big staircase,

as imitating a classical temple. The gold decorations brings back to

the memory Klimt, Olbrich and the “Viennese secession” while the

decorative details of the banisher come from the Art Noveau

virtuosities. Small homes and big imperial villas: in this particular

architectonical alternation lies the uniqueness of Capri’s landscape

that through roofs, faces and precious entrances, tells a story lost in

time’s meanders.

Non è il tempo a scandire il ritmo delle giornate capresi, sono i colori, i profumi e i sapori che contraddistinguono da sempre l'Isola Azzura,

dimora nei secoli di nobili e intellettuali, artisti e sognatori, celebrità e uomini d'affari alla ricerca di un buen retiro dove assaporare bellezza

e libertà. Sono le passeggiate solitarie, i panorami mozzafiato e quei silenzi irreali a confluire nell'orizzonte, al calar della sera, quando il

tramonto con le sue struggenti sfumature cede il passo a sogni e immaginazione. Dall'estremità sud-occidentale di Capri, dove si erge il Faro

di Punta Carena, a Ventroso e Marina Piccola, fino ai Faraglioni, la baia si tinge di cromatismi intensi, così vividi da lasciare una traccia

indelebile nei ricordi dei visitatori. Dopo la quiete del crepuscolo prende vita la lunga notte caprese, tra il vocio all'ombra dello storico

campanile e i bar della suggestiva Piazzetta, “il salotto del mondo” che si appresta a festeggiare, aspettando l'alba, sulle note dell'Anema e Core.

The dreams horizon. It’s not time to mark the rhythm of days in Capri, but they are the colors, the smells and the tastes that have always

distinguished the Blue Island, home, during years, of nobles and intellectuals, artists and dreamers, celebrities and business men searching

for a buen retiro where to find beauty and freedom. When night falls, and sunset with its romantic shades leaves the scene to dreams and

imagination, lonely walks, breathtaking panoramas and unreal silences flood into that horizon. From the South-West part of Capri, where

stands the Punta Carena Lighthouse, in Ventroso and Marina Piccola, up to the Faraglioni, the bay paints with intense chromatisms, so

vivid to leave a permanent trace in the memories of visitors. After the twilight’s peace starts the long caprese night, among the clatter at the

E’ PROPRIO QUI INFATTI, SECONDO IL MITO,

CHE SI RIFUGEREBBERO QUESTE AMMALIANTI CREATURE.

Quale miglior luogo se non Capri, con i suoi panorami mozzafiato e il blu del mare, dove far vivere straordinari miti e leggende? Angeli

che vegliano sull’isola e spiriti maligni che, secondo gli antichi romani, abitavano la splendida Grotta Azzurra. Ma le vere protagoniste di

questi racconti sono le Sirene. Metà donne e metà pesce, avvolte in un’aura magica, da millenni incantano l’immaginario collettivo con la

loro sinuosa sensualità. E’ stato lo scrittore latino Servio che per primo ha indicato Capri come luogo di residenza di queste fiabesche

creature. Ma sono le stesse caratteristiche naturali dell’isola, ricca di distese verdi e di precipizi scoscesi, a renderla così simile al luogo

descritto da Omero nell’Odissea, in cui l’eroico Ulisse viene attratto proprio qui dal loro meraviglioso canto. Ancora oggi, a Marina Piccola,

dove troneggia maestoso “Lo scoglio delle Sirene”, sono in molti ad ammirare con trasporto quella grande distesa di roccia che svetta

sull’azzurro mare caprese . Tra mito e realtà, la leggenda rivive dunque sui fondali cristallini dell’Isola, abile, oggi come ieri, nell'attrarre

migliaia di viaggiatori da tutto il mondo. Ed è l'essenza stessa di Capri, nella sua impareggiabile bellezza, a diventare Sirena, trasformandosi

in un richiamo dal fascino irresistibile.

the Mermaids one. It is just here indeed, according to the myth, that would refuge these enchanting creatures.

Which better place there would be more than Capri, with its breathtaking panoramas and the blue sea, to set extraordinary myths and

legends? Angels watching over the island and evil spirits who, according to ancient Romans, haunted the splendid Grotta Azzurra. But the

real protagonists of these stories are Mermaids. Half women half fishes, wrapped up in a magic halo, by millennium captivate the collective

imagination with their sinuous sensuality. Servio, the famous Latin writer was the first to indicate Capri as the residence of these fairy

creatures. But they are the natural characteristics of the island itself, rich in green spaces and steep cliffs, to make it so similar to the place

described by Homer in his Odyssey, in which the heroic Ulysses is attracted right here from their marvelous singing. Yet today, in Marina

Piccola, where the “Mermaids Rock” dominates, many people admire with emotion that big rock expanse that stands over the Capri’s blue

sea. So between myth and reality, the legend keeps on living in the island’s crystalline seabeds, capable, today as yesterday, to attract thousands

of travelers from all over the world. And it is the essence of Capri, in its incomparable beauty, to turn itself into a Mermaid, becoming an

irresistible fascinating call.

mentre Kirk Douglas indugiava al sole in uno dei tanti tavolini del

Gran Caffè dove era solita rilassarsi anche l'attrice svedese Ingrid

Bergman. Questi sono solo alcuni degli attimi rubati, preziosi

momenti di relax che il jet set internazionale - star hollywoodiane,

socialite, teste coronate e aristocrazia – era solito concedersi al riparo

dai clamori della mondanità in quel buen retiro tra le acque azzurre

del Mediterraneo. Perchè se artisti, pittori, creativi e intellettuali

hanno tratto ispirazione nei secoli dalle calde e assolate bellezze

there are the black and white pictures, nostalgic postcards published

still today, that immortalized the most famous people came on the

island, as Corinne Calvet and Clarke Gable, just to say two names.

Scogli maestosi, ripide insenature e rocce dalle forme fantasiose, l’isola di Capri è

scolpita nei minimi dettagli dalle mani del più sapiente degli artisti: Madre Natura.

Il suo paesaggio è un’opera d’arte naturale amato e ammirato da scrittori, attori,

registi e scultori che con i loro lavori hanno contribuito ad arricchire l’incantevole

fascino dell’isola. Tante sono infatti le sculture, classiche e moderne, che adornano

alcune tra le ville più sontuose, dimore dei più noti personaggi capresi. Statue di

imperatori e politici ma anche di divinità. Un esempio importante è rappresentato

dalle innumerevoli opere collezionate dal medico svedese Axel Munthe e custodite

oggi nella sua Villa San Michele. Reperti di epoca romana, etrusca ed egizia, tra cui

spiccano la testa di Medusa , che adornava il tempio di Venere a Roma e il busto

dell’imperatore Tiberio. Tra questi anche la celebre sfinge, uno dei simboli artistici

dell’isola, posizionata sul punto più alto della villa e affacciata sull’immenso mare

Majestic rocks, steep nooks and stones with imaginative shapes, Capri island is

sculpted in every details by the hands of the greatest artist: Mother Nature. Its

landscape is a natural masterpiece loved and admired by writers, actors, movie makers

and sculptors who have contributed with their works to enrich the enchanting charm

of the island. There are so many sculptures indeed, classic and modern, that decorate

some of the most sumptuous villas, homes of the most famous Capri’s personalities.

Statues of emperors and politicians but also divinities. The great numbers of works

collected by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe, today kept in his Villa San Michele

, are an important example. Etrurian, Roman and Egyptian finds, among which

stands out the Medusa’s head, that once decorated the temple of Venus in Rome and

the bust of the emperor Tiberius. Among them there is also the famous sphinx, one
