The Claw Hammer

The Tape Measure

A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler. Itconsists of a ribbon of cloth, plastic, fiber glass, ormetal strip with linear-measurement markings. It is acommon measuring tool. Its design allows for ameasure of great length to be easily carried in pocketor toolkit and permits one to measure around curvesor corners.

The Chalkline

A chalk line or chalk box is a tool for marking long,straight lines on relatively flat surfaces, much farther

than is practical by hand or with a straightedge.It is an important tool inconstructionandcarpentry,the working of timber in a rough and unplanned state,as it does not require the timber to have a straight orsquared edge formed onto it beforehand.

The Utility Knife

A good utility knife is another asset for thewoodworker. There are many different kinds, but thekind that uses disposable blades is the most common.The blade retracts into the grip for safety. Thewoodworker will use the utility knife when cleaning outmortise oints or scribing wood, as well as many otheruses.

The Chisel

A long-bladed hand tool with a beveled cutting edgeand a plain handle that is struck with a hammer ormallet, used to cut or shape wood, stone, metal, orother hard materials.

The Level

The Nail Set

The next hand tool every woodworker should have isa nail set. In fact, you should have several si*es. Theylook like awls, and you use them to drive nail headsinto the wood so they are flush or right below thesurface. This allows you to fill the holes and preparefor staining or painting. The nail setter will usuallyhave either a convex or concave surface to grip thenail better and keep it from sliding off and marring thewood.

The Sliding Bevel

A layout square 2sometimes also referred to as acombination square3 is a triangular-shaped measuringtool designed for making square marks or angles onstock.

The layout square has three maor functions. 4irst andmost often, it is used for making square marks on apiece of stock. econd, a layout square has markings

making it easy to determine an approximate angle ofa mark or cut. 4inally, a layout square allows the userto mark angles in a similar manner to the method fordetermining an existing angle.

A block plane is the key to versatility in yourwoodwork. "ou can flatten a piece of wood, add acurve to it, or square your work. hape or chamferyour stock using a block plane. 5nce you have apiece dovetailed, you can smooth the oint with yourblock plane, rather than spending endless timesanding. The Caliper

A caliper 21ritish spelling also caliper, or in pluraltantum sense a pair of calipers3 is a device used tomeasure the distance between two opposite sides ofan obect. A caliper can be as simple as a compasswith inward or outward-facing points. The tips of thecaliper are adusted to fit across the points to bemeasured, the caliper is then removed and thedistance read by measuring between the tips with ameasuring tool, such as a ruler.

The Clamp

A clamp is a fastening device used to hold or secureobects tightly together to prevent movement orseparation through the application of inward pressure.In the (nited 6ingdom and Australia, the term crampis often used instead when the tool is for temporaryuse for positioning components during construction
