PRE-SERVICE PRAYER

O Lord, by your dealings with us, whether of joy or pain, of light or darkness, let us be brought to you. Let us value no treatment of your grace simply because it makes us happy or because it makes us sad, because it gives us or denies us what we want; but may all that you send us bring us to you; that knowing your perfectness, we may be sure in every disappointment you are still loving us, in every darkness you are still enlightening us, and in every enforced idleness you are giving us life, as in his death you gave life to your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

What else did God create?

God created all things by his powerful Word, and all his creation was very good; everything flourished under his loving rule.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

* RESPONSIVE OLD TESTAMENT READING (p. 667) Isaiah 40:9-11 “God’s People Are Comforted”

Leader: Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; Congregation: lift up your voice with strength,

O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

Hymn – He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought

GOSPEL READING (p. 103) John 10:11-18

Jesus the Good Shepherd

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

SERMON – I AM the Good Shepherd

Sermon Notes: John 10:11-18

Jesus the Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep:

❖ Intentionally (v 11)

❖ Sacrificially (v 12-13)

❖ With an invitation to intimacy (v 14-16)

❖ Freely and voluntarily (v 17-18)

POSTLUDE Good Shepherd, You Know Us - Timothy Albrecht

PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS Eileen Reynolds Linda Pearson Marie Davies

Quote of the Day: “The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.” ― Timothy Keller, The Reason for God
