The Revitalized Nature Tailby: Meredith D.

With the noise of frogs filling your ears, all your problems seem to dissolve. The new nature trail has just finished Phase 1. Phase 1 involved making the beginning of the boardwalk that leads to the pond. First, Mr. Smith designed frames. Once they were made, black tubing was placed on the ground, and the frames were bolted on top of the tubing. The reason for this is so that the wood will not become moist and rot. Next, the volunteers set the boards on the frames. Phase 2 is going to be a boardwalk around the whole pond. Ms. Sisson wants to have Phase 2 be done by the beginning of the next school year.

You are probably wondering who worked on this. Well, Ms. Sisson is basically in charge of the whole project. Mr. Smith also is very important to the project. Many teachers, alumni, and parents came to help with Phase 1. Phase 2 may not be

able to go on without donations; even a small amount can make a difference.

The nature trail has officially opened and you are welcome to come see it!

One of the most expensive presidential campaigns in history ended with a decisive victory for President Barack Obama. It broke the record with around 900 million dollars spent in total and about 120 million people cast their votes. The 2012 presidential election between Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan and Barack Obama/Joseph Biden culminated on November 6th. The two candidates came from very different backgrounds. Obama grew up in Hawaii and was born on August 4th, 1961. He attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He assumed his first term in office on January 20th, 2009. Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate, was born March 12th, 1947 and like Obama, graduated from Harvard. Mitt Romney is a successful American businessman who served as the 70th governor of Massachusetts. Both candidates offer America different perspectives.

Many things aligned for Obama to end his campaign victoriously. One reason that Obama had a decisive victory was his winning most of the battleground states. The battleground states are states whose Electoral College votes could swing either Republican or Democratic. Some states historically vote Democratic or Republican. Obama won the most Electoral votes as well as the popular votes. When the voters were interviewed, many agreed that the biggest concern was the economy which would influence their vote. In Obama’s victory speech he pledged to achieve many of the goals he was not able to fulfill during his last term. Obama, using both humor and sincerity, also thanked his wife and children throughout his speech for their support.

WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS

This November was filled to the rim with basketball moments that, for the average fan, was as big as a new President. From WNBA to the NBA, everything was filled with excitement. And what is better than some good basketball? Well, for me, nothing.

Let’s start out in the WNBA. With the season just ending, it is a good time to reflect on the past Finals series between the Western Conference Minnesota Lynx and the Eastern Conference Indiana Fever. The Indiana Fever had a break-out season leading them to the Finals, and the Lynx have a new and improved line-up including Maya Moore and Devereaux Peters. But in the end, the Lynx had a bad couple of games and just could not face the hot Fever of Indiana, losing in four games. The series MVP was Tamika Catchings of the Fever. Even though it was such a quick series, it was still filled with excitement and enthusiasm. What a great way to end a great WNBA season and who knows what is going to happen next year?

Now onto the NBA with a new, fresh season starting. Over the offseason, there were many headline stories. First, let’s start with the Boston Celtics letting Ray Allen leave to play for the Miami Heat. In the playoffs, Allen had ankle spurs so he saw less playing time than normal. Also, his leaving for Miami breaks apart the first “big three” of the modern era of basketball. But, with Jeff Greene coming back and the team receiving Jason Terry from a deal with the Mavericks, the Celtics are a team to put on your watch list. Next, let’s fly out west to Los Angeles, the Celtics rival, getting some key additions including Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns and Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. This is also another team to put on your watch list because with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol also in the starting line-up, this team will be able to do some damage. Now let’s go down south to Oklahoma City. Unfortunately for the OKC fans, the Thunder traded James Harden, a key player off the bench with the best facial hair in the league, and Cole Aldrich to a young Houston Team coached by Kevin McHale for Kevin Martin and some draft picks. Also in the the off-season, the Houston Rockets signed new rising guard Jeremy Lin, who will be a key addition to this team if he can keep his turnovers down. The last big pick-up of the off- season was the pick-up of Andre Iguoadola, a small forward, who is becoming an elite star of this league. So watch out for the Denver Nuggets. Probably the biggest event that happened in the NBA was the addition of a new team: the Brooklyn Nets. Starting in Brooklyn is Deron Williams, one of the best point guards in the league, forward Joe Johnson, and center Brooke Lopez, who are all potential all-stars. This is going to be a great season for the NBA, so keep your eyes peeled for some eye-popping action

IDS SPORTS By Lauren H. This fall, the IDS cross-country team and boys’ and girls’ soccer teams had very rewarding seasons. This year, cross-country followed the same practice schedule as the soccer teams. With all of the IDS sports teams practicing at such an intense level, we were able to establish a skilled set of teams.

The girls’ soccer team had a very successful season this year ultimately ending up with a record of four wins and two losses. In the first game, the girls faced a loss against Foote, 3-1. Though they came up short in this game, the team gained a sense of the game and the level of competition that they would be up against throughout the season. In their next game, they traveled to Country to strive for a win against a team that they knew was very skilled. They went in on their toes and played hard against a team they did not expect to beat. They lost by the same score as the previous game, 3-1. Though they had lost their first two games, the girls had on their side experience and knowledge of how they were to fit in among their competition. Their season was only uphill from there for in their remaining four games they managed to defeat all four schools. The best game the girls played in the season was their game against Watkinson. The fact that the team had grown and developed tactically was very evident. They were moving the ball exceptionally well and had improved tremendously from their first match. Great work to the girls’ soccer team and a huge thank you to their coach Miss Boyce for making the season the best it could be.

The boys’ soccer team also showed extraordinary improvement and progress throughout the fall soccer season this year. Unfortunately, their season was cut short, and the weather only allowed them to play a total of three games. They made the most of these three games as they finished of their season undefeated! In their first game they came out hard and with energy. The technical side of their game was especially exceptional. They came out of their first game with a win by about four goals. With this win, they coasted through the rest of their season by defeating Mooreland Hill and Watkinson. In the game against Watkinson, their effort and depth as a team was clearly visible. After the first half, they were down by two goals. With only thirteen players on the team their fitness was a challenge, especially in this game. The boys dug deep in the second half and brought back a very well-earned win 3-2. In the concluding game of the season, the boys earned an impeccable win opposing Mooreland Hill. Great work to the boys and good luck! Also a shout out to Ms. Sisson for being a masterful coach this season.

The “new and improved” IDS cross-country team cleaned up this season. In their three meets they were very dominant placing in exceptional numbers. After the season, each runner was incredibly fit, being able to complete The Pumpkin Run, a 5K-no sweat! Each day at practice the IDS community watched them work hard as they ran their way throughout different areas of the IDS campus. Their hard work definitely paid off in the end as their appetite to succeed and ambitious energy was evident every time they made an announcement at school meeting. A tremendous applause to the IDS cross country team on a job very well done. Thank you to their spirited coach Mrs. Ficke and also Senora Castillo and Senora Dwyer for running alongside and giving support to them in practice.

Imagine being in a world made of blocks and there is only one rule: you can only make what your imagine holds. In the Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft, an update was launched on October 16th which now includes creative mode and new mobs like endermen, silverfish and cave spiders. If attacked by one of these mobs, your health lowers. Creative mode is a game option in Minecraft in which you have unlimited supplies of everything so you can set your imagination free and build anything that you want to craft. Some things that we made in creative mode are yachts, private jets, villages, a hockey arena, a basketball court, a baseball field, a portal to another dimension called the Nether, farms, roller coasters with lava falls and a three level hotel! There are four difficulties in creative mode: peaceful which has no mobs, easy which has a few, medium which has a fair amount, and hard which has a lot of mobs. Survival mode is a mode where you have limited resources that you mine with a pickaxe, sword and shovel. Another new feature includes a draw and aim option in the bow when shooting an arrow. You may find abandoned strongholds, mine shafts and villages. There are different weather conditions too! No Xbox 360? No problem! Minecraft is also available on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and computers! All versions have creative and survival modes. No matter what version you are playing or what mode you are in, Minecraft is great fun for everyone! If you play with your friends, it just adds to the fun!

Contest: If you send us your best creation by December 21st your creation might be posted in the next article for everyone to see! E-mail Miss Boyce ([email protected] to submit your idea.

As I was walking through the woodsI saw an autumn tree.

Its leaves were brightly colored sparks

And auburns running free.

Its trunk was thick and coated with

Gold sap that fell like rain.

Its bark was hard, and knotted thick

With knurls and twisted strains.

I spied two limbs that twisted, joined

Connected to the tree.

They strained and shivered in the wind,

Beneath the groaning breeze.

As I was walking through the woods

I saw an autumn tree.

I left it there and walked along

And there it still should be.

Perk On Main was established in 2003 and incorporated in Connecticut. It has two restaurants located in Connecticut: Perk On Main found in Durham and Perk On Church found in Guilford. Currently, Perk On Main is owned by Katie Hughes and Mark Hughes, a sister and brother team who work wonderfully side by side.

Perk On Main’s food is great and is very delicious. If you’re worried about portion sizes, they have portions that are perfect. Their menu has various items on it. They serve special crepes, burritos, salads and sandwiches. The service is amazing! When you walk in the door, you hear a “Welcome to Perk On Main!”. When they serve you the food, you get a smile and “Enjoy!”.

Everybody seems to love Perk On Main. I have asked a number of people about Perk On Main and most of them said it was great! I myself think it’s a great environment, great people and great food. Go to Perk On Main-it’s definitely worth it!

What is your favorite area eatery? Send the name of the restaurant and why it is your favorite to Miss Boyce ([email protected]). Your spot may be featured in our next issue!

National News:

Most recently, we have witnessed terrible disasters brought by hurricane Sandy. This hurricane began in the southern oceans and moved up the east coast. We were very lucky that we were not struck too hard by this storm. Two days of school were missed, but with the help of our teachers and a little extra homework, we did not “miss” any days. Luckily, there was no damage done to IDS buildings.
