Creating our idea

• When brainstorming ideas about what our magazine cover should be like, we all agreed that our type of magazine should either be health, or teen gossip. We thought that a health magazine might be a good venture, as the main theme in our film is mental health, due to this being a real life, important teen issue. However we also thought that a teen ‘gossip' magazine might also be a sensible choice, as our film is also a teen drama film, meaning that the target audience for our film are also reading these type of magazines.

Creating our idea

• We knew that a film magazine like ‘EMPIRE’ or ‘Little White Lies’ were not appropriate for us to use, as after researching these titles, we found that main characters from either action or horror films feature predominantly. In addition to this, these magazines also tend to feature large budget, international blockbusters, which our film is the opposite of, being low budget and more niche.

Teen gossip magazines

• However, we did some research on teen gossip magazines and found that this type of magazine might not be appropriate for us to use either, as the main image of the star on the cover is usually a real actor or musician appearing as themselves and not a character. In addition to this, these type of magazines also tended to focus on less meaningful and more ‘gossipy’ issues like relationships or what to wear for different seasons.

Health Magazines

• Our final possible magazine idea was for a health magazine, as our film is about anxiety and otherwise poor mental health in teenagers. We felt that a health magazine might be the most appropriate kind of magazine to use, as not only would our film fit this type of magazine very well, but expanding on the issue of anxiety and mental health would not look out of place in a health magazine.

‘INSPIRE’

• Eventually, we decided to mix elements of both teen gossip and health magazines together, to create our one magazine which we named ‘INSPIRE.’ We gave our magazine this name as the aim of our teaser trailer and marketing campaign as a whole is to inspire teenagers to deal with any mental health issues that may occur in their own lives and to show them that there is hope. Our magazine mainly followed the conventions and appearance of a health magazine, but with slight elements taken from teen gossip magazines.
