Interfacial Phenomena - enhancing your formulations

We understand how formulations interact with devices and systems We develop systems that dispense the right dose with the right texture to the right place

• Film and bubble formation

• Droplet formation in sprays and emulsions.

• Crystallisation

• Gelation

• Electro & Thermo-chemistry

• Foam formation

• Mixing and dissolution

• Wetting

Personal Care Industry?

Page 6: Dispensing new experiences for the consumer

Understanding interfacial phenomena enables innovation in two major trends

Organic & Natural Personalisation

Minimising VOCs, excipients, e.g. preservatives

No need to derivatize natural actives

Dial-up/dial-down dosing

Fragrance/texture choice

Innovative packaging and

dispensing systems

Diagnostics informs user

Emulsions ‘on-demand’

We understand the emulsification process and the demanding needs of personal care formulation manufacture

By controlling the flow of multiple liquid phases different droplet sizes can be created

Ratios of lipid and aqueous phases can be varied to give various textures and sensorial characteristics Customised Emulsion

Benefits of in-situ emulsification

Less heating Shorter mixing time Control of droplet size Selection of viscosity and texture Creating only quantities needed

– Less/no preservative needed

– Less/milder surfactants

Novel Foaming System

• Topical foams have grown in popularity

• Over 100 patents filed in last 10 years

• We have developed a novel low-cost foaming system

• Benefits include:

• High quality (<50m bubbles, 95% gas phase)

• Lower pressures (<2 bar) allow use of PET packaging

• Air or nitrogen as a propellant (no VOCs)

Foamed emulsions

Benefits & applications of foaming

• Topical foams can be spread more easily

• Single phase solutions or emulsions can be foamed

• E.g. shaving foams, topical skincare, suncare

• High solids loading (e.g. 10% w/w TiO2)

• Oil-in-water & water-in-oil emulsions

• Less surfactant needed

• Suitable for appliances & hand pumps

PROJECT EXAMPLE – Structured Idea Management

We developed Vortik in house, using our experience in drug delivery mechanisms

This spray head allows the customer to vary they spray properties in ways that are not possible in conventional aerosols

The liquids and gas are mixed in a specially designed, cyclonic chamber

Vortik does not require damaging VOCs to work. It uses air

…this delivers a tighter particle distribution than conventional sprays

…..and the spray characteristics can be varied by adjusting the relative pressures

Multiple liquids can be combined at the point of delivery. Swirling and shear perform the mixing

On demand spray

Benefits of in-situ combine and spray

Multiple inlets allow for mixing at point of spray

A 3mm cyclone typically delivers 0.1cc / second

A 20mm cyclone typically delivers 1 litre / minute

• Incompatible formulations and actives can be kept separate until the last second

• Ratios of different liquids can be varied in real time

• Particle size distribution can be controlled, e.g. minimising respirable droplets

TRENDS

Diagnostics leads to personalisation

Go beyond a gimmick and back this up with real science!

In-store DNA testing can recommend particular skincare products for that individual, increasing customised solutions

and brand loyalty

Consumers want personalisation in skin care, haircare and oral care products – one size does NOT fit all

The sample collection & analysis process is straightforward

1. Partially assembled test cartridge is supplied

2. Adhesive cover removed 3. Test cartridge applied to skin

4. Cartridge folded and wet reagents applied if required

5. Cartridge assembled into reader device

6. Reader device plugged into smartphone for data capture
