Chosen Setting: Online School

• A flexible and independent educational environment which caterers toward individual student needs (K12, 2014).

• Certified teachers are highly qualified, many holding phDs (Stanford University Online High School, 2015) and act as learning coaches for students (K12, 2014).

• Utilizes modern technology to achieve educational aims (K12, 2014) while still engaging students in real time discussion virtually (Stanford University Online High School, 2015).

• The online setting allows for the existence of a diverse student body which can draw on the wealth of individual experience and contribute this to the virtual seminars which facilitate student engagement (Stanford University Online High School 2015).

School Mission Statement

• The Volunteer Online School is a fully accredited online school adhering to national standards for students grades K-12, which provides a flexible educational environment assisting individual students in achieving academic success. We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to receive a quality education that meets them where they are. Our duty is to equip students with the tools needed to attend college. We are accountable for providing a nationally competitive education that empowers all students.

Available Educational Technology

• If a student does not have a computer or notebook, a loaner notebook will be given and subsidized internet access will be given to assist with the internet bill per month.

• If needed, students will also receive a pair of head phones.

Achieving National Standards with the

Volunteer School Online

• Curriculum offerings are aligned with the Common Core State Standards Initiative ( Education World, 2015)

• Additional National Standards for grades K-12 are met with our curriculum including those for ESL (TESOL) and Gifted Program Standards (NAGC) (Education World, 2015).

• To ensure that National and State Standards for specific coursework are met, our school utilizes our diverse course offerings and partnerships. A framework for completion of courses with educational partners on a local, regional and national level has been established to align our unique and flexible curriculum with the required standards (K12, 2014).

High School Requirements

• High School Graduation Requirements: 24 completed credits, satisfying the course requirements. Full time high school students are required to complete 6 consecutive credits annually (George Washington University Online High School, 2015).
