Bryn Terfel’s tenure as one ofLiverpool Philharmonic’s fourArtists in Residence was amemorable two weeks duringwhich capacity audiences atLiverpool Philharmonic Hallenjoyed the virtuosity and artisticgenerosity of the multi-awardwinning opera star whose concertsopened the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra’s 2014/13concert season.

A Night at the Musicals, Brahms’A German Requiem, a lunchtimeconcert of music by Bach and twostupendous performances ofPuccini’s Tosca, during whichTerfel reprised one of his signatureroles as the dangerouslycharismatic Scarpia, all celebratedone of music’s great voices.

‘You cannot have Bryn intown for almost two weeksand not have him deliver oneof his most indeliblecreations.’ Review of Tosca

‘To net Bryn Terfel for atwo-week stint was areal coup for the RLPO...his appearances inBach, Brahms andsongs from the shows, plus his animatingpresence behind thescenes, have lived up tosky-high expectations.Petrenko and theorchestra matchedTerfel’s five-starquality... nothing shortof masterful.’★★★★ review of ToscaSeptember 2013

Interview

Why did you decide to becomea musician?I wasn't really any good at anythingelse!

What's the one performancefrom your career that sticks inyour mind?Mozart’s Posthorn SerenadewithChristoph Eschenbach in the SwissAlps. It was wonderful music andplayed in the most magical setting.

What's the mostembarrassing thing that'shappened to you on stage?Having to play a concerto inLiverpool Philharmonic Hallwearing nothing but my pyjamasand barefoot!

If you could work with onemusician, living or dead, whowould it be and why?Barbra Streisand, believe it or not. Iwould love to have the chance toshare the stage with one of the lastgreat larger than life superstars.

Could you give us an exampleof the downside of theprofession, something thatthe average concert-goermight not know about? Often, by the time I get home thepub has shut! Also, I find that at theend of the evening my eyes aresmarting and a bit pink due tohaving not blinked enough duringthe performance.

Does the touring lifestylebring out rock star behaviourin the orchestra? All I will say is that an orchestraknows how to let down its hair ...

Have you witnessed anyserious diva strops in yourtime as a musician? There was one notable occasionwhen a particular singer had theback of a major concert hall rebuiltso as not to have to see any memberof the orchestra. I did think that wasa bit much.

What's the biggest challengefacing musicians like youthese days?To make sure that a comprehensivemusic education is available to allchildren. Without that there will beno audiences and musicians oftomorrow.

What's the best thing aboutbeing a musician? Music is the ultimate means ofcommunication, and to be able to dothis with a group of friends who canfeel and respond to every nuance ina fraction of a second is an absoluteprivilege.

‘I enjoyed myself. When I walked outI felt happy. Then I got nervous, butmy mate gave me a little smile so I wasall right. When the woman shouted the ‘WestEverton Children's Orchestra', everyonestarted cheering. I felt amazed and happy.

‘I love my violin. We all love it. My littlebrother is going in to Year One and he'll bestarting to play an instrument soon. He saidhe's going to play the double bass or thecello.’Lucy, aged 9, In Harmony Liverpool

‘I've done four or five Proms, but none quitelike this. The children were the main eventand a lot of children in the audience will havegone away thinking they want to play aninstrument. Seeing children do it of their ownage just makes them think 'well whyshouldn't I?' Which is what we need andmaybe some of them will end up playing withLiverpool Philharmonic in the future.’ Susanna Jordan violinRoyal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra
