Executive Director,Orquesta Filarmónica de Boca del Río

I strongly believe in making a difference. I believe music education is a means to ac-

cess performance, values, aspiration, as well as a heightened sense of expression and beauty. Ac-cess to music or an artistic education, is the core activity in the furthering of the arts at present, globally, and in the long term. The arts are a fun-damental element in the social, intellectual and emotional development of culture and societies.

I had the privilege of being brought up in a mu-sical middle-class household, my parents were both musicians and worked at a public state university in México, the Universidad Veracruzana. I grew up lis-tening to Brahms and Revueltas, talking with them about theater and art. My parents, to their abilities, supported my dreams and believing in myself.

I have worked both in the private and public sectors, lived, studied and worked in 4 countries, travelled and performed in over 30 countries in the

Welcome

Americas, Asia and Europe. Presented my Carnegie Hall debut recital in 2005, and have had the privi-lege to work with celebrated maestros, including Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Gustado Dudamel and Carlos Miguel Prieto, in some of the world’s finest concert halls, as well as in remote and hardship locations, such as Canaima Venezuela and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Attended Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

I have been in charge of the Orquesta Fi-larmónica de Boca del Río since inception. From hiring a staff, audition the orchestra, develop programs and activities, form a board of direc-tors, form a Not-for-Profit organization. At pres-ent, we are about to launch the construction of a Cultural Center in Boca del Río, which will be the home of the orchestra, and the center-piece of an urban development plan.

Thank you for taking the time to go over this document.

E arliest music education stages, starting out at 5 years old studying

at the Centro de Iniciación Musical Infan-til, in Xalapa, México, where I first learned about solfege and theory, about choir, string quartet and examinations. Moving on to perform with the Universidad Ve-racruzana youth orchestra. I decided to become a musician, and concluding this early period by attending the Interlochen Arts Academy, an arts boarding school in Michigan, where I had the chance to per-form with the likes of violinist Hilary Hahn, cellist Janos Starker and Neeme Järvi.

Living at International House, making friends from all walks of life opened up my world tremendously, and made me realize the great power and wide reach music education and music making can have in the lives of people and in soci-ety as a whole.

2004--2005This year in a way culminated 20

years of practice, learning, devel-oping. Since performing with the Jeu-nesses Musicales World Orchestra in Berlin in 1999, and having worked with members of the Berlin Philarmonic, it was my dream to study in Berlin and be in close contact with an ensemble that sets the highest standards worldwide. In 2004 I was accepted to study at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, as a student one can practice at the concert hall, which allowed me to observe many rehearsals and attend concerts. It was a dream come true. Lots of effort went into finding funding for my studies there.

A new stage in life, from the stage to back stage. From performing

to creating, developing and implement-ing programs. Creation, another learning curve, working in a different capacity to make music available to society. This pe-riod allowed me to develop in the field of cultural policy, arts administration and music education.

B eing a professor at Mexico’s In-stituto Tecnológico de Monterrey

(ITESM), teaching Analysis of Cultural In-dustries allowed me to share what I had learned in almost 20 years of experience in the arts with a new generation of students. It was a vastly rewarding experience, be-ing able to design a syllabus, readings and exploring the cultural industries through enriching class discussion.

In collaboration and with the sup-port of Boca del Río’s Mayor, Miguel An-gel Yunes, I was in charge of creating, de-veloping, implementing and launching the Orquesta Filarmónica de Boca del Río, an ensemble with a unique profile across the industry; it is versatile, dedi-cated to musical excellence, and with a

strong commitment to social responsibil-ity. The collaboration of renowned guest artists and our experienced Music Direc-tor, Maestro Jorge Mester, along with quality programming, guarantees the quality of the concert seasons. Orches-tra Chamber Music Ensembles perform free concerts in churches, schools, nurs-ing homes, hospitals, universities, public spaces and shopping malls, giving us a presence in a wide sector of the city. Orquestando Armonía is the orchestra’s free after-school social development program aimed at children, that uses the transformative power of music as a means to cultivate a higher state of con-science and to develop citizens with high values and aspirations.

I have had the amazing opportunity to be part of a team along with architect Michel Rojkind and Miguel Angel Yunes, dreaming up, designing and building a world-class cultural center, which along with an extensive programming and ac-tivities, will be the home of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Boca del Río. The cultural center is the main element in an urban development plan which will bring in-vestment in commercial areas as well as housing to downtown Boca del Río, an area that has struggled economically over the years.
