Dear Parents,

Once again, we are horrifed by a senseless, inhumane terrorist act in France. Thank G-d, there were no fatalities and only a few were injured (most from panic attacks). The victims need our Tefillos, as does the entire Jewish population of France. Although Homeland Security (based upon my conversation with John Wessel, head of Security for Federation) does not feel that there is any threat to American Jewry, it is our responsibility to our children and ourselves to remain vigilant. However, there are concerns for Jews (and others) in Europe and the Middle East. At this time of year, when we are more attentive to and spend more time with our prayers, we need to

especially include all of Acheinu B’nai Yisrael, worldwide Jewry, in our supplications to the Ribbono Shel Olam. May all our entreaties be answered positively, and may we soon be privileged to “experience” the Ge’u’lah Shelaimah.

Very Focused Learning Our heavy-duty coverage of Aseres Yemei

Teshuvah (ten days of repentance – from Rosh HaShanah through Yom HaKippurim) will continue on Monday. Following that, Thursday and Friday will see crash courses in the myriad laws and complex days of the upcoming Yom Tov of Succos. Among the topics of intended inclusion are: Esrog, Lulav, Hadasim, Aravos, Succah, S’chach, Hoshanos, Simchas Beis HaSho’ei’vah, Hoshanah Rabah, Shemini Atzeres, Simchas Torah, Aliyah LeRegel, Chol HaMoed, Isru Chag, and on and on. To complement these Halachos and to enhance your Chagim, many beautiful, gorgeous, creative, festive, colorful, delightful, enjoyable, pretty, breathtaking, and, even, OK Succos projects should be arriving at your doorsteps (together with your children) next Friday P.M.

TSGW Dinner/Journal/Succos We are once again sending home an ad blank for the journal which will accompany our Eighteenth Annual Dinner. Invitations will reach your homes after Yom Tov, and it’s now time to get working on the ads. Coming up in 9 days is Succos, which is a time for families and friends to get reacquainted in the close confines of our “house - for - a – week,” “Yom Tov - in - a - thatched - hut” quarters. It can also be a GOLDEN (literally and figuratively) opportunity to “share” with our guests, hosts, fellow travelers, newly-found friends, long-lost relatives, etc., the Zechus of supporting the Torah institutes of our respective communities. In this spirit, we reremind you that the:

              September 14, 2012

Dear Parents:

Preparations for the 18th annual TSGW banquet are now officially underway!

Sunday, December 2 is much closer than you might think.  We are gearing up and preparing for

another wonderful and special evening of delectable cuisine and enjoyable camaraderie.

This year we have the special privilege of honoring The Honorable Stuart and Mrs. Fran Eizenstat

for their many year of tireless dedication to our Country and to our People.  The Eizenstats are also

proud TSGW grandparents.  Additionally, we will be honoring two devoted members of our staff,

Mrs. Shulie Bergman and Mrs. Michelle Swartz.  Having consistently given their best to so many

of our children for so many years, Mrs. Bergman and Mrs. Swartz have faithfully served on our

Torah School faculty.  The annual banquet is an excellent opportunity for all of us to demonstrate

how much the dedicated efforts of these people are so greatly appreciated.  Aside from showing

them our Hakaras HaTov, the banquet is also our largest fundraising event of the year, and, as such,

it is an integral part of the Torah School’s success and stability.

We all receive many invitations to many school banquets; however, I can unequivocally state that

the Torah School is no ordinary school, and this is no ordinary banquet.  It is vitally important that

all parents attend our dinner to show support for our unique and special institution and to

recognize the accomplishments of our outstanding honorees.  To maintain banquet affordability

and to facilitate businesses participation, advertisement prices are unchanged from last year.

Additionally, in order to help enable everyone to attend and to expand our advertisement base, we

are offering a credit to anyone who solicits new business ads (businesses not listed in last year’s

journal).  You will be amazed at how many businesses will agree to place an ad in the journal just

because you, their valued customer, asked them to do so!  We will grant 50 percent of the new ad

revenue you generate (after the first $150) toward the price of a dinner.  So, if you sell $550 worth of

new ads, you will earn enough credit for a complimentary dinner!  For your convenience, I have

attached an ad blank with this communiqué.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this most important event on our school calendar.

              Wishing you a Shana Tovah,

              Zev Teichman

              Executive Director

Classroom Close-Ups September 21, 2012 By Ms. Kerry Griffin Volume IX, Issue 1

A day in our first grade classroom is replete with excitement and enthusiasm. It’s filled with delightful moments where students are making observations and making sense of their worlds. They are developing ways of looking at the world and sharing their insights through conversations, illustrations, and writing. When we get a glimpse of first graders thinking, it can be quite amusing and enlightening.

Writing itself can be a challenging task for early first graders. In fact, some would say it’s no “picnic”! One thing for certain is that they are hungry to communicate. As the teacher, it’s not only my responsibility to teach the process and conventions of writing, but to feed that hunger.

I recently asked the girls, “Why do writers write?” Together, we made a colorful poster listing some of the responses: to share their feelings, they love to, it’s fun, to ask questions, to persuade, to teach, to communicate, to express themselves, and to share their experiences. In a follow-up lesson I asked the question, “What do writers write”. The girls were excited to see the many concrete examples I showed them that included a/an: shopping list, email, note, card, reminders, memo, story, and letter.

In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, the girls pretended to be mommies and made shopping lists of what they needed to purchase for Yom Tov. Some of items listed by students were, of course, apples, honey, fish head, pomegranates, and wine.

All students will be learning about the 7 traits of good writing, ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation, throughout their years here at the Torah School. These traits are the foundation on which the writing process is built.

Last week, my class learned more about the Ideas trait by singing, to the tune of row “row, row, row your boat,” “write, write, write your thoughts, make your ideas clear, tell the reader what you know and what you hold most dear.” Each girl got her own large light bulb cutout and filled in some ideas of things about which she could write. These included: family, me, friends, animals, and school, to name a few. They placed these into their writing portfolios and will add other ideas throughout the year.

Our writing center had its grand opening last week. The class was given a tour of all the materials, tools, and ideas that are at their disposal. Oh, the possibilities! You may have heard a first grader mention coffee talk (aka cawfee tawk, with their newly learned New York accents). I filled an old coffee can with different story topics about which to write. They really got a kick out of: a smelly snowflake, a magic feather, and a flying bicycle.

Page 8: Erev Shabbos Erev, Erev, Erev, Erev, Erev Yom HaKippurim ... · Erev Shabbos Erev, Erev, Erev, Erev, Erev Yom HaKippurim Parashas VaYeilech September 21, 2012 Licht Bentchen: 6:48

Another activity found at the writing center that has caused major excitement is Writing Treasure. I placed miniature items, such as a squirrel, looking glass, tire, tree, etc into a treasure chest. Students are to choose an item and write about it, describe it or make up a story about it.

The picnic basket that is located at the writing center is another visually appealing prop to create excitement and motivation for my little authors. It is filled with different story starters. Each story begins “I’m going on a picnic...” and may end with such phrases as: with Ms. Griffin, underwater, in my closet, or with my stuffed animals. The girls love to pick ideas out of the picnic basket for creative writing fun.

The writing center is overflowing with: colorful cards and papers, tons of rubber stamps and colored inks, a mailbox, postage, fun pads of paper, gel pens, pencils, and much, much more. All these things are there to excite and inspire students to express their ideas in writing even “before they have mastered all the mechanics of standard orthography, sentence and paragraph structure.”

I have many creative things planned for the very near future to aide in teaching students about the process of writing. Next week, the class will create sculptures with clay. This will give them a chance to experience the process of building something of their own while learning that the artistic process of making a sculpture is comparable to the writing process. They will begin to realize that the steps they take to create a sculpture are similar to drafting, revising, and editing pieces of writing. Through this lesson, we will discuss how artists and writers go through a similar process when they create. They create something, have a deadline, and have to revise and edit before their work is final.

The first major writing piece on which the girls will be working over the next couple of weeks is their personal narratives. Once they have gone through the editing and revising process, they will be ready for the final touches. They will be learning and using scrapbooking tools and techniques to create and publish these unique paper bag books. Be on the lookout for these works of art!
