Dear Parents, We open by keeping last week’s promise to provide a recap of Friday’s third-in-TSGW-history Grandparent’s Day. From the welcoming reception, to the guided tours, to the classroom visits, to the art projects, to the family portraits, to the luncheon – everything went smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by our over 130 visitors. We’ve got lots of people to thank and, hopefully, no one will be left out. We first express HaKaras HaTov to Baruch and Rochelle Wertenteil for initiating this event. We are also greatly grateful to our planners, movers, and shakers, Zev Teichman, Julie Vogel, Julie Malka, and Aviva Rosen; our dedicated office staff, Marlene Teichman, Jodi Mailman and Abby Pines; and our cast of volunteers whose presence last week was critical, Esti Graham, Yael Azran, Deena Hadar, Rachie Reingold, Rachael Starkman, Shira Kavanagh, Sharon Shimoff, Galit Rutstein, Galit Kushnier, Sarit Kovacs, Sharon Graff, Becky Langer, Yocheved Sussman, and Adina Gayer. This long list of helpers was put together by Mrs. Miri Gottlieb, and her efforts are also greatly appreciated. Additionally, the Sixth Grade Boys were super-helpful in getting things together and taking it all apart. Special appreciation goes to Cory Myers for the fantastic, professional pictures and to Melissa Miller and Miri Gottlieb for coordinating this effort. The art projects the kids made with grandparents were very creatively planned and calmly guided by Mrs. Chaya Shinensky. Finally, any Jewish occasion/celebration needs outstanding food. In this case, it was catered by “Wrap 2 Go” whose proprietors are Azik Schwechter and Chaim Gabay. They also provided munchy chocolate chip cookies for all children in the school (besides the ice cream given to all who were in classrooms). Of course, above all, we thank the Ribbono Shel Olam who constantly graces us with his beneficence.

YOM YERUSHALAYIM

Next Wednesday, June 1st, is the 28th of Iyar and is known as Yom Yerushalayim. This was the day in June, 1967 when Jerusalem was reunited, and its residents were able to safely emerge from their bomb shelters. (Editor’s Note: Being in a Miklat, a bomb shelter, is a frightening, sobering experience. My wife, my oldest daughter, and I had to be in one during the Yom Kippur War in 1973.) In addition, in Shulchan Oruch Orach Chaim 580:2, it says that this is the date of the Yahrzeit of Shmuel HaNavi.

Middah Alert The latest tips to help us judge others favorably are: Before passing judgement, remember: Maybe he/she is really right. Maybe he/she made a mistake. Maybe you made the mistake.

Some of What’s

Going On Actually, a lot of what’s going on is going out, as

we’ve had some big trip doings this week. Our Lag B’Omer activities took place on Lad B’Omer and Laz B’Omer. 1st -6th did their “stuff” on Monday, and all Kindergartens visited Clark’s Elioak Farm yesterday. Monday’s hike had to be cancelled due to the Billy Goat Trail’s closure (because of rain). However, Mrs. Dunkin saved the day by suggesting we visit the National Zoo. All classes had wonderful times – even as the weather has gotten hotter and more humid.

Our Sixth Graders went on their long-anticipated graduation excursions, the boys on Tuesday and Wednesday and the girls on Wednesday and Thursday. HaKaras HaTov goes to Rabbi Biberfeld, Mrs. Karp, Mrs. Mailman, Mrs. Biberfeld, Mrs. Bracha and Mr. Chaim Melman, Mrs. Kreiser, Miss Alana Mailman, Miss Devora Bressler, Mr. Eli Verschleisser, Mrs. Elaine Rubin, Mrs. Jessica and Mr. Jay Eizenstat for driving, chaperoning, housing, playing games, teaching Torah, singing, organizing, lifeguarding, navigating, providing a pool and a house, BBQing, and/or just being great sports. Special thanks also go to Rabbi Aharon Tendler and Rabbi Eli Greengart who gave of their time to meet and speak with our boys in Yeshivas Ner Yisrael. Both groups profusely thank Mrs. Mailman for all the time she spent making arrangements and putting together great packets of info and games. We are especially grateful to the Ribbono Shel Olam that everyone went and came back healthy and safe. The common threads running between all these events were the compliments our kids received

for their wonderful Derech Eretz up and down and in and around the East Coast.

Ezra Mond (of Third Grade fame) came to me twice this week with understandings that he gained from learning Unkelos, the classical Aramaic translation of the Torah.

I received the following note from Esther Malka Lichtenstein (of Kindergarten fame):

Dear Rabbi Charner and all of my Morahs, J”ung Thank you for arranging and taking me on the very fun trip to the park and farm! I had a VERY, VERY nice time there. I especially liked feeding the animals. I love the Torah School! Love, Esther Malka

2G have made a Table Top community. Each girl made a model of her home and one other building. We have many creations, including a zoo, a theater, a TV station, and a model of the Torah School.

4G have written stories about favorite memories with their grandparents which were read aloud for Grandparents’ Day.

5G made a beautiful, creative booklet with the Pesukim of Az Yashir, the song sung at the Yam Suf.

2G bought and sold veggies that they made as part of their Ivrit unit.

3G completed Parashas Vayeitzei. They also played frisbee, using air as a natural resource, and wrote essays about a Third Grader’s lessons from life.

6B/G are exploring space. 1B/G have made 3D space shuttles. Mr. Cohen

(Yaakov’s dad) sent in bunches of posters and other space related resources from his trip to the Goddard Space Center in CA. Students used 3D glasses with a poster of the sun.

Golden Opportunity Starting on October 31, 2011, Mrs. Aviva Werner is going to give our kids a special opportunity. Among her accomplishments, Mrs. Werner is a published author and editor of a Jewish children’s magazine. She will be using these skills to conduct creative writing workshops for our 4th-6th Graders, and the end goal will be to publish a literary magazine. Our plan is to have these workshops on Monday from 3:45-4:45. There will be one group for girls and one for boys, meeting every other week. If your child is interested in this program, please fill in the form at the end of this letter. It will not be a commitment, but will indicate the level of interest. Many thanks to Mrs. Werner.

Classroom Close-ups on Second Grade

Morah Sara Crane Volume VII, Issue 28

Reflecting on the progress that my wonderful class has made, both as students and as

individuals, I am awed at the amount and depth of information that they have absorbed over this time. As the school year progressed, the girls began to realize that there were connections that they could make between different lessons and that many aspects of learning are related At the beginning of every day, we learn Chumash. When we first embarked on this journey, the girls were unfamiliar with how to navigate this precious sefer. September saw the students learning how to open their chumashim to the right place: the correct perek and pasuk. Once this task was mastered, we progressed with reading and translating the pesukim together as a class. On the white board were all the milim and shoroshim, vocabulary and root words, for them to learn and store for future use in understanding new pesukim. The class utilized their knowledge of basic prefixes, while becoming familiar with more difficult ones. Questions were asked and answered in English, as was most written work.

As the year progressed, the girls did not need to rely upon shoroshim being translated for

them. With encouragement and support, they were able to interpret the meaning of shoroshim which were on the board. This slowly evolved into recognizing and deciphering root words straight from the words in the pasuk. All through the months of learning Chumash, the class amassed a broad knowledge of the many prefixes and suffixes seen throughout the text of the pesukim. As we stand at year’s end, the girls are able to look at a multisyllabic word and, with concentration, translate it in its entirety. They also proudly answer questions in Ivrit in their workbooks.

The class continuously builds on its understanding of many common verbs through a

weekly addition to our po’al workbook. They learn to classify verbs in all forms: male, female, singular and plural. Many of these verbs or action words are found in pesukim. This gives the girls an opportunity to draw on their knowledge of other parts of the curriculum into their understanding of the Chumash.

Of course, the effort that the class invests into our daily Chumash routine is enhanced

and rewarded by other activities, such as putting on skits, singing, and creating visual aids. For example, on a given day, a student may stand up in front of the classroom as Avrohom Aveinu or Sara Emainu, reenacting a scene from the pasuk. Using a variety of learning styles in order to engage my talmidos helps to encourage and stimulate all of them.

As our hardworking Second Graders grow in skills, language comprehension and ability,

they have, most importantly, made tremendous strides working to succeed as young ladies with beautiful Middos.

vumn ,ufrcBlessings Said Before Performing a Mitzvah

Part IIWith a few rare exceptions, a vumn ,ufrc is said i,h ¦«a£g©k r ¥cIg, just before

doing the vumn. The most frequent and well-known exception involves thelighting of Shabbos candles. The recitation of the blessing over the candles isconsidered to be an “acceptance” of Shabbos by a Woman. Hence, she mustlight the candles before saying the vfrc. This is why women cover their eyeswhile saying the vfrc - so as not to benefit from the light until after saying thevfrc.

The following are examples of vumn ,ufrc which are not said regularly. As we wrote last week, each one starts with:

“///ubumu uh,umnc ubase rat okugv lkn ubheukt ws v,t lurc" Before putting up a Mezuzah, we say:

"/vzuzn guCek////"“...To affix a vzuzn/"

Before dipping vessels in a vuen, we say:"/ohkf ,khcy kg////"

“....about the immersion of vessels.”

Before building a protective railing around a roof, we say:"/vegn ,uagk////"

“...to construct a railing.”As we complete Year IV of Ooroo LaTefillah, our prayer is that this year’s

topics have given greater meaning to all the blessings we say before and aftereating, upon hearing and seeing G-d’s wonders, and before doing ,uumn/

A NAME AND A NUMBER

Torah thought on health and nutrition:

“Take a census of the entire assembly of the Children of Israel according to their families, according to their fathers’ household, by number of the names, every male according to their head count,” (Bamidbar 1, 2).

The book of Bamidbar begins with the commandment to count the Jewish People, specifically to assess the number of males above the age of 20 to determine, among other things, the legion of eligible soldiers for the army. But the verse dictates the process in a seemingly peculiar manner – “במספר שמות – by the number of the names”. Couldn’t it have more simply stated, “the number of participants” or “the number of people”? What does a person’s name have to do with their position in an overall count?

A Jew is both a number and a name.

We are all part of a greater whole – the Nation of Israel. We are inexorably and eternally linked together. We are not isolated entities existing on our own islands. We have no individual agenda. We are all part of the Goy Kadosh, a Sanctified Nation charged with fulfilling HaShem’s mitzvos in order to bring light to an otherwise very dark world. No one is exempt. We pray in the plural and ask for collective forgiveness. We’re all part of the chain that is Jewish history and are also subject to the first rule of that chain – only as strong as our weakest link. This is the rule of a number – it only has significance in relation to a group.

But we are also a name, which by definition is individual. We are all unique, possessing combinations of strengths, weaknesses, characteristics and tendencies – physically, intellectually and emotionally – that HaShem crafted exclusively for each and every one of us. We have to look no further than our finger prints to attest to our individuality – a series of otherwise inconsequential curves that sets us apart from every other being on the face of the planet.

We all have varied and disparate roles to play in the context of the greater whole that is Klal Yisroel. We’re obligated to maximize our singular potential and play our particular part in order to tender our contribution to the Jewish People’s purpose in joining with our Creator in perfecting His creation.

So, what does this have to do with eating, you might ask? This paradigm plays an integral role in a person’s healthy relationship with food.

Many of us suffer from “terminal uniqueness”. “I’m different than everyone else. “ “My metabolism is slower so I can’t lose weight like other people.”

“They are not as busy as I am, so that’s why they can find the time to exercise and I can’t.” “If they only had my problems, then they also couldn’t concentrate on sticking to a plan.” “No one has as strong cravings as I do.” “My schedule is too hectic, I can’t make the time to plan, shop and prepare healthy meals like her.” etc . . . etc . . .

Too often, too many of us make excuses to rationalize the inability to make the changes necessary to have a healthy relationship with food. The secret is that we all have the capability. HaShem made all of our bodies equal in the context that we all need six essential nutrients every day in order to survive and thrive. Forgoing this essential truth will affect us all – some in the short term, others in the long term – most of us in both.

No one is exempt from the necessity to eat healthy. It’s an immutable law that governs the nature HaShem saw fit to create. As much as we may like to try, we can’t outsmart the Creator of the Universe.

At the same time, we do have exceptional qualities that we must respect and adjust for accordingly. Whether it’s our metabolism or thyroid, some of us burn calories faster than others. So we must account for our uniqueness and not get frustrated if we see others eating larger quantities of food and feel jealous that we can’t do the same.

Some of us are compact, others broad boned. Some petite, others tall and lanky. Our body shapes and sizes are the perfect ones for us because the Perfect One determined it should be that way. We need to fuel our bodies with the quantity of food accordingly – not restrict ourselves in order to match some unrealistic expectation, nor stuff ourselves just because others can consume a little more without adverse effects.

If we truly respect the wonderful and irreplaceable body that HaShem gave us, we would be willing to meet its uniform requirements at the same time as satisfying our unique needs, providing us the best opportunity to live in a sound mind and body. Good שבת.

The purpose of eating is to obtain nutrition – without which, we would die (G-d forbid). Nutrients are chemical substances that deliver the life force to the billions of cells in our bodies, providing energy, promoting growth and

developing and regulating body functions. There are six essential nutrients: (complex) carbohydrates, proteins, lipids (fats and oils), vitamins, minerals,

and water. Healthy eating begins with choosing foods that contain one or more of these vital substances – think fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean

meats, cheese, nuts and beans.

A calorie is a unit of energy. It does not determine the quality of the food or its nutritional value, but merely identifies the amount of energy that

particular food possesses. An empty calorie – think soda, candy or nosh –delivers a quick bolt of energy due to the overwhelming amount of sugar

(simple carbohydrate), but doesn’t offer any real nutrition because it lacks any of the six essential nutrients. As well, energy that lacks any real nutrition lasts but a few moments, often creating a “crash and burn” syndrome because

our cells are starved of consistent, healthy energy. Coming soon: Quantity and Quality.

Quick Tip to Better Health: Calories vs. Nutrients

One of the biggest mistakes – and myths – people make regarding dieting and choosing foods to eat is focusing on the calorie count. The government used to use calories as the exclusive standard by which to determine the value of

foods. They have since incorporated much more tangible nutritional information to help consumers better understand the quality of the products

they purchase.

EXTENSIVE BOTTLE FEEDING LINKED TO CHILDHOOD OBESITY

A new study by Temple University published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows that infants who were bottled fed with calorie-containing beverages until the age of 2 showed a greater propensity toward obesity as they got older. About 23% of prolonged bottle users were obese by

age 5.

“This is a practice that has been discouraged for years because it promotes tooth decay, and this is one of the first studies to show that may also promote obesity,” said pediatrician Robert Whitaker, professor of public health and pediatrics at Temple and a co-author of the study.

Researchers analyzed thousands of children from a federal survey, identifying those that were still using a bottle at age 2 as their primary drink container and/or were put to bed with a bottle with a calorie-containing beverage, even milk.
