Seeing Science in art

Discover links to science in the City of Hobart Art Prize exhibition.Record your findings using art materials from the fantastic Art Cart, designed by Patrick Hall.

Time: Sessions last approximately 20 minutes

Join in and explore our wonderful collections, engaging displays and fun activities at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG). We’ve also got some great live entertainment in store – make sure you look out for some balloon creatures!Enjoy a day out at your museum. Suitable for all ages.All activities are drop-in sessions unless otherwise indicated.

Topsy-turvy tales

Discover the curious stories of the Governor’s wombat and the false platypus, then create your own topsy-turvy animals.

Time: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Location: Bond Store Ground

Drawing in detail pARTicipate drawing workshop

Have fun viewing interesting things through a magnifying glass and drawing what you see.

Time: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Location: Centre for Learning and Discovery, Level 2, Link Foyer

Snowflake symmetry

Each snowflake is different. Come and create your own unique snowflake.

Time: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

What’s on the inside?

Come and chat with our taxidermist and find out how we ‘stuff’ the animals that you see on display in the museum.

What scat is that?

Animal poo, or scats, can reveal many interesting things about animals: what they eat, their behaviours and where they live. Have a go at moulding a replica animal poo!

Fabulous flora

Come and meet some of TMAG’s Herbarium curators.Find out about pressing plants, identifying leaves and see if you can guess the mystery object.

Open cottage

The Private Secretary’s Cottage is one of our oldest buildings and rarely opens to the public due to its age and condition. Come and explore this gem nestled amongst the TMAG buildings.

Location: Private Secretary’s Cottage (access from Link Foyer, Level 1)

Backpacks and toolkits

Borrow a Discovery Backpack or Museum Toolkit, filled with challenges, puzzles and tools, from the Visitor Information Desk. Backpacks map out quests throughout TMAG, while toolkits provide a set of hands-on tools for exploring our collection.
