FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is an exciting and diverse arts festival fostering Hellenic links to the arts and celebrating Hellenic culture. The breadth, depth and complexity of Hellenism extends far beyond Greek nationality and encompasses a richly evolving culture beyond borders.
FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® (formerly THE GREEK CULTURAL MONTH) is held annually in Adelaide during February , March, April and May and is a major part of South Australia’s cultural scene. It provides an open platform for people of any background to showcase Hellenic connections to the arts and their Australian manifestations. We have a commitment to community cultural development and aim to make FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® accessible to the wider audience. In this way we inform, broaden horizons, break down stereotypes, and foster greater harmony and understanding.
FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is coordinated by the South Australian Council for the Greek Cultural Month Incorporated. It is a community, umbrella organisation, with membership open to any group, organisation and society with an interest in Hellenic connections to the arts. Established in 1991, with the support of the Consulate General of Greece in South Australia, it is non-political, non-sectarian, non profit and independent. The Governing board of volunteers is elected every two years by member organisations.

Welcome to Festival Hellenika® 2016. This promises to be our most exciting year yet as we celebrate our 25th anniversary.
Through our annual gathering of artists, we will continue to offer a wide ranging series of performances, screenings, presentations, exhibitions, concerts and events that reflect the talent and passion that have engaged audiences throughout South Australia. We aim to reach people from all walks of life, including a commitment to young people from early childhood through to tertiary level. Furthermore we are proud of our creative achievements and our long-standing aim to encourage, stimulate and promote all aspects of artistic creation as we celebrate Hellenic culture.
Since its inception, Festival Hellenika® has showcased an extraordinary range of events. As we look back over our archives, a major highlight has been our yearly ‘Musical Hellenika’ concert now presented at The Adelaide Festival Centre. In addition to the engagement of local performers, our musical productions by international artists have been highly acclaimed. Our program has encompassed all styles of Greek music ranging from traditional, to the contemporary including internationally renowned Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hajidakis, the Rembetika of Markos Vamvakaris and Vassilis Tsitsanis, to the popular music of Yiannis Markopoulos and Stavros Xarhakos with an estimated 20,000 patrons attending.
It would be remiss of me if I did not mention two significant events in our festival’s history that marked our efforts to connect with main stream artistic bodies, a concert on the music of Greece in conjunction with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and in 2003 a major collaboration with Nexus Multicultural Art Centre, where we presented the inspirational ‘Oud Project’.
We have presented a rich array of talks by scholars in their chosen fields, including Dr Stahis Gaunlet on Rembetika, Mr Peter Ewer on ‘Forgotten ANZACS’, Prof. Alfred Vincent on Nikos Kazantzakis, Mr Li Chenggui on ‘Zorba in China’, Prof. Han Baltussen from the Classics Department of The University of Adelaide on numerous classical topics and Prof. M. Tsianikas and students of the Greek Dept of Flinders University on Konstantinos Kavafis.
Festival Hellenika® is made possible through the passion and commitment of our committee members, who I thank for their ongoing support. I would like to thank our major partners - the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, the Adelaide Festival Centre, Adelaide Pavilion, Argon Design, Multicultural SA and all our generous sponsors for encouraging, supporting and believing in us.

Yiannis Papaioannou was born in Kios of Asia Minor in 1914. At the age of 8 and during the catastrophe of Asia Minor he resettled in Piraeus with his mother and grandmother. As a refugee child he endured many hardships and had to work from a young age to support his family. He had a passion for music and learned to play the mouth organ, the mandolin, the accordion and the guitar. He fell in love with the bouzouki when he heard an instrumental recorded by Ioannis Halkias in America. He bought a bouzouki, quickly became a virtuoso and started composing his own songs.
His first hit in 1935, ”Faliriotissa”, broke all sale records of the time. He composed many songs sung by the most popular singers of his era. Whilst still actively performing with his longtime friend Vassilis Tsitsanis he was killed tragically in a car accident in 1972.

The four Artists capture the beauty of Greece in a fascinating intertwining of styles including mixed media conceptual art, murals, textiles and sculptural designs. Vibrant colours, beautiful landscapes an enticing array of Greek themes and concepts come alive and captivate the hues and reflections, light and shade of Greece and the artists’ pride in their heritage.
Observe an Artist at work for one day only on Wednesday 23 March 12pm - 4pm when Pandora will be painting “live” in the foyer of Hamra Centre.

ΞEΝΙΤΙΑ - Journey Songs of the Greek Diaspora.
The phenomenon of emigration for centuries is associated with Greek life.
The temptation to flee and the rampant desire to return to the homeland is evident from Homeric times. In all its aspects Greek music is inseparable from Greek daily life therefore it could not remain disengaged when having to deal with the strong emotions of separation, the anxiety about the unknown destination, the sorrow of nostalgia and the longing for an eventual return.
Thousands of songs have been written expressing these feelings in all historical phases of Greek migration and sung from generation to generation. The two-hour programme of our concert including Traditional, Popular and Contemporary songs is a tribute to the generations of those who once tasted the sorrows and the joys of emigration.

The ever present threat to the world’s cultural artefacts, make this lecture more than significant.
The Greeks were in Syria for over 1000 years and left a considerable legacy in architecture, art and philosophy just to name a few.
The Greek language was used to spread Christianity from Syria to the world and the word Christian was first used in Antioch.
As this rich legacy is now threatened by extinction after more than 2000 years, it is worth remembering the value of this important historical contribution.

Every culture in the ancient world embraced a story about the life after this one. Somehow humankind struggles with the idea that life is finite. The remarkably creative accounts of a world beyond our own even, seem to exhibit an evolution.
In this lecture, Han will examine hell (and heaven) as literary, philosophical and religious products of the imagination, ranging from the Homeric ghosts to the hilarious monsters of Aristophanic comedy, to the more refined moral universe of Greco-Roman and Christian intellectuals.

Musical Director Seamas Rhind, readers: Joanna Tsalikis, Michael Baldwin, Malcolm Robinson, violin Rob Wallace, soprano Emma Wu, tenor John Frangos and guests.

HOSPITALS AND HEALING IN THE BYZANTINE EMPIRETalk / Ομιλία (English)

How did people living in the Byzantine Empire cure or alleviate their illnesses or ailments? What role did hospitals play?
From the 4th century, church fathers such as St Basil the Great of Caesarea stressed the importance of charity and charitable institutions. Byzantine emperors, bishops and rich individuals built hospitals as a demonstration of their religious duty and piety.
This talk will explore the various healing options available to the Byzantines using evidence from a variety of sources.
Topics will include the medicinal role of food, the use of healing shrines, doctors and traditional medicine, the role of the hospital, and the relationship between medicine and religion. In particular, it will examine the social, religious and cultural background that contributed to the development of the hospital in the Byzantine period, and will provide examples of some of the more famous hospitals that existed at the time.

Post-Second World War migration from Greece to Australia was actively encouraged between 1952 and 1970. By the early 1980s there were over 250,000 Greeks living in Australia. First generation Greek migrants successfully sustain an identity that promotes difference within a host nation while maintaining a connection to homeland.
Dr Papadelos’s paper explores the way that second generation Greek-Australians negotiate a hyphenated identity, and what aspects of their ‘Greekness’ they maintain and subsequently pass on to the next generation.

Greek food maintains a tradition of nearly 4000 years and like many cultures it also preserves a rich variety of customs and social rituals associated with food and its connection to the sacred.
