Mid-South Messenger - June 2017

A new take on MSSA’s Scholarship Silent Auction

Good morning friends,

We are just 75 days away from our convention in Memphis! Blues, BBQ, the TrainWreck Band, a day of sun at the Elvis Davis Golf Classic, the Memphis Town Tour, information packed seminars by Jeff Young & David Watson, our sold out Exhibit Hall Event, the Steve Metheny Scholarship Auction, and last but not least; the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum & Blues City Café Party on Saturday Night! Lots of good stuff and lots of good fun! We can’t wait to see everyone.

How many of you enjoy watching American Pickers? Or maybe taking a day to stroll through a craft show? The idea that “one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure” is certainly true.

The Scholarship Committee was thinking, with all of the creative and art minded folks within MSSA, that maybe we could add an element of “picking” to our silent auction. Do you have an old sign or old piece of neon laying around that just might be someone else’s treasure? Heck, maybe you could even make an old sign or craft a piece of neon (the retro look is in you know) that could possibly be another man’s treasure?

We would like to challenge your shop to come up with, buy locally or build an item that “sign folks”, “football folks” or just “good ole folks” would find interesting, if not downright inspiring. Surrounded by so much talent it seems like a waste to go shopping for gifts in a store, when we could offer artful gifts that are made right here in the USA, by our fellow members and citizens. We think that this would add a nice personal touch to our silent auction. To save a spot for each gift and to make sure that we don’t end up with 35 neon clocks, please forward an email with your gift idea, description and a value by or before June 30th to [email protected]. The email subject title should read My Mid-South Gift. Feel free to call or email me with questions. (504) 415-4929.

Again, all gift ideas need to be submitted by June 30th.

Thank you,Sean SchultzChairman, MSSA Scholarship Foundation

Mid-South Messenger - June 2017

By Lori Anderson, President & CEO, International Sign Association

When ISA created its Elite program three years ago we had no idea how popular the program would become or how quickly it would catch on. People were applying to be a part of the 2017 ISA Elite class before the applications were even open! Some 150 young people applied to the 2017 program, which will bring 34 up and coming sign professionals to ISA Sign Expo 2017 and a 3-day leadership training at ISA’s headquarters in the fall.

Yes, those accepted in to the program can have bragging rights for being an “ISA Elite.” But that doesn’t answer the question: why is ISA doing this?

Consider these facts:• Six out of 10 manufacturing positions remain unfilled due to a talent shortage.• Fifty-four percent of sign, graphics and visual communications companies say that finding qualified workers is the industry’s biggest workforce issue.• According to the Manufacturing Institute, only 37 percent of parents want their children to consider manufacturing as a career.• Millennials are more numerous than any age group since the Baby Boomer generation and will count for more than 50 percent of the workforce in three short years.• Losing an employee can cost as much as two times their annual salary.

The bottom line is that we need young sign professionals to be enthusiastic about the sign, graphics and visual communications industry not just now, but for the long haul. To fill open jobs, our industry is competing against other manufacturing interests, as well as the service and financial sectors, all of which are in need of millennials to fill open positions. The ISA Elite program helps these bright and talented individuals see a long-term future with the sign, graphics and visual communications industry. With Baby Boomers quickly retiring and the number of Generation Xers unable to fill the needs, millennials need to rise quickly to serve as industry leaders.

The sign, graphics and visual communications industry is an incredible career path. These 34 young folks in the 2017 class will leave ISA Sign Expo 2017 ready to take on the world. Congratulations to the 2017 ISA Elite Class for achieving these bragging rights! In looking over this class list, as well as the 2015 and 2016 rosters, I think the industry will be in great hands for the future. And that, my friends, is why ISA is investing in this program.

Positive Outlook for the Sign, Graphics and Visual Communication IndustryAll four sectors of the sign, graphics and visual communications industry are poised for growth over the next few years, according to the International Sign Association’s Sign Industry Quarterly Economic Report.

The report shows that the industry is growing well above the pace of the overall U.S. economy. All four sectors covered by the report see growth at or above the historical trend into 2018.

Key highlights:

• In supply side printing, expectations remain above the historical trend despite a slight dip in expectation from the last report. The outlook for 2018 has improved, as the index is set to hit its highest levels for the industry since 2012.• Supply side electrical/digital also will see a slight cooling in 2017 from expectations, but growth should be just above the historical trend for 2017. This positive trend is expected to accelerate into 2018 and stay strong in 2019.• In end market electrical/digital, 2017 remains very strong, and while growth will slow in 2018 and 2019, it will remain well above the historical trend through the end of the forecast. • End market architectural also shows favorable growth in 2017, remaining above trend through 2019.• The report, compiled by IHS and Vandiver Associates, analyzes each segment of the market upstream and downstream to allow users to stay current with evolving business conditions.

The report is free for ISA and MSSA custom sign company members at www.signs.org/quarterlyreport.

Digital Print Continues to Offer OpportunitiesDigital printing is transforming the packaging, signage and display supply chain. But as wide format printing technology has advanced with new inks and media types, the need to efficiently prepare files is driving the adoption of advanced workflow solutions.

A new white paper from ISA and Esko, compiled by InfoTrends, explores the market opportunities as well as production techniques to reduce waste and improve performance. Market Opportunities for Digital Printing also includes case studies of a number of print shops that have improved productivity by implementing Esko’s solutions.

Visit www.signs.org/research to access Market Opportunities for Digital Printing as well as other research that provide insight into all aspects of printing.

Finding and retaining qualified workers continues to be one of the most pressing issues facing the sign, graphics and visual communications industry. ISA tackles this issue through Sign Manufacturing Day. Sign Manufacturing Day brings high school, community college and technical school students into sign shops so that they can learn about the dynamic career opportunities available in our industry. Sign Manufacturing Day is held annually on the first Friday of October and is occurring this year on Friday, October 6 at sign shops across the U.S. and Canada.

Open your doors to future employees by participating in Sign Manufacturing Day! Email ISA’s Alison Kent at [email protected] to get started, or attend a free webinar on Wednesday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. ET to get all the information you need about Sign Manufacturing Day. Learn more at www.signs.org/MFGDay or www.signs.org/webinars.

The Sign Research Foundation’s annual event, the National Signage Research and Education Conference (NSREC) broke all attendance records when it was held April 19 in Las Vegas. Academics, students, researchers, planners and designers came together for discussions on creating sign systems within the public process, developing reasonable sign codes and future technologies within the industry. NSREC was completely sold out, with attendance 220 percent higher than the previous record.

SRF is more than just a conference, though. Its resources provide insight into the value of on-premise signs and the values they bring to communities. A new SRF video posted on www.signresearch.org explains how the organization works and its mission. Its 2016 annual report details its significant accomplishments in the past year.

SRF operates thanks to the generosity of supporters, whose donations fund its work. Learn more by visiting www.signresearch.org.
