ComponentFeatures

The Alco Valves Group carries out extensive research and testing on its Alco-Lok fittings range. The key to effective tubing fitting is in ensuring that the tubing is softer than the fitting material. All fittings have been successfully tested against a tube hardness of Rb90, the maximum allowable under ASTM A213 & A269. Although a maximum hardness of Rb90 is acceptable, the Alco Valves Group advocates Rb80 for use with all Alco-Lok fittings for lower cost and ease of installation.

Tubing installers should be particularly careful to secure the full recommended 1-1/4 turns of pull-up when installing harder tubing. As higher torques are required there may be an impulse to stop before the full pull-up is achieved.

Correct connection and assembly is integral to ensuring that tubing remains leak-free. If surface defects occur during installation it can expose the most minute paths through which light gases such as helium, hydrogen and nitrogen can escape. As the tube outside diameter increases, so does the likelihood of a scratch or other fault interfering with the seal.

Further to carefully following all installation instructions, the Alco Valves Group suggests choosing a heavier wall thickness of tubing for optimum gas service connections. This will put up more resistance to ferrule action, allowing the ferrules to coin out minor surface imperfections. A thin wall tube will collapse, reducing the chance of coining out scratches and other defects. In order to maximise prevention against surface flaws in any gas system, the Alco Valves Group suggests using a wall thickness no less than what is covered in the reference tables listed on the opposite page.

CONNECTION

Standard Alco-Lok fittings are made from 316/316L stainless steel with silver plating on the internal nut threads available with thread sizes from 1/16” to 1” NPT/BSPT/BSPP. Other materials and connections are available on request. Alco-Lok fittings in metric sizes have an additional step on the shoulder of the nuts and bodies for easy identification.

† Alco-Lok fittings are delivered assembled and ready for immediate use. Disassembly before use can result in dirt or foreign materials obstructing fittings causing leaks.

Alco-Lok fittings are supplied completely assembled and ready to use. Only bulkhead fittings need to be partially disassembled prior to use. To ensure a secure and timely installation, a standard wrench and a marker pen will be needed. Please check the tubing first to make sure it is free from scratches and surface defects, then follow these three simple steps:

You can re-assemble Alco-Lok fittings a number of times. To re-assemble the fittings please follow the steps below:

INSTALLATION†

Use the marker pen to place a dot on the nut at the 6 o’clock position.

Hold the fitting steady and use the wrench to tighten the nut 1.1/4" turns. On the final 1/4" turn the dot should be positioned at 9 o’clock.

For sizes 1/8" and 3/16" the nut should be tightened 3/4" of a turn so the dot is sitting at the 3 o’clock position.

1/8" & 3/16" | 3/4" rev. 6mm - 25mm | 1-1/4" rev.

Insert tubing with pre-set rings into the tubing body until the front ring seats.

Insert the tubing fully into the Alco-Lok fitting and hand-tighten the nut until it is finger-tight.

The fitting will resemble the diagram to the right when in its disassembled position.

Tighten the nut by hand until it is finger-tight. A significant amount of resistance will be apparent. Secure the nut with a wrench 1.1/4 turns.
