FOIL Method(Voice Thread)
(CEP 413)
Madera SchwaryFall 2011
Objectives
We will learn how to use the FOIL Method for multiplying polynomials together.
Will go over new vocabulary and review old vocab that relates to this topic.
Students will be able to successfully follow these steps by the end of the lesson.
Using the FOIL Method
F – FirstO – OutsideI – InsideL – Last
We follow these operations when multiplying Polynomials.
(x+3)(x+2)
• First – multiply the first terms (x and x)
• Outside – multiply the terms on the outside (x and 2)
• Inside – multiply the terms on the inside (3 and x)
• Last – multiply the last terms (3 and 2)
• (x + 3)(x + 2) = x2
• (x + 3)(x + 2) = 2x
• (x + 3)(x + 2) = 3x
• (x + 3)(x + 2) = 6
Now we have an equation that looks like this:
x2 + 2x + 3x + 6
We add like terms:
2x + 3x = 5x
And finally we end up with the equation:
x2 + 5x + 6
In Conclusion…(x + 3)(x + 2) = x2 + 5x + 6
