• Many kids display an almost inherent aversion to brushing their teeth. Sometimes, helping children understand how brushing and flossing keep our teeth healthy encourages them to take a more active role in their oral hygiene. Make learning fun by drawing a tooth on white paper, filling it in with yellow marker, and cutting it out. Explain to a child that teeth become yellow and unhealthy without brushing. Now find a toothbrush and white paint and have the child paint the tooth yellow, pretending the white paint is toothpaste.

• One common instructive tool is a hardboiled egg. Show a child the egg and explain that the shell protects the egg inside, just like enamel acts like a shield for our teeth. Then place the egg in a jar of vinegar. Remove the egg after three days and point out the soft, vulnerable shell. Point out that, just like eggs left in vinegar, our teeth become exposed to dangers if we don't take proper care of them.
