LAKE JAMES — Greg Griffis is a sailor, favoring his MC and M20 scows over kayaks, canoes or speed boats.
Griffis, a retired art teacher, spends lots of time sailing his two sailboats he refers to as scows despite the fact it’s officially referred to as the Lake James Yacht Club.
“An MC scow is 16 feet long and usually sailed by one person. An M20 scow is 20 feet long with two people.
I actually have both,” he said. “I enjoy both. An M20 is a boat that has three sails. When you’re downwind, you need a spinnaker, which is a front sail that’s usually colorful.”
Of the two vessels, Griffis said he probably likes his MC scow best.
“It’s got a lot of sail and moves pretty well. It handles moderate winds,” he said. “For sailing, these are good inland boats.”
Griffis got his start in loving scows when he was a crew member of an M20 on Lake James.
Summers are definitely busy on Lake James for racing on weekends on the first basin. MC scow races are at 10 a.m. Saturdays and M20 competition is at 10 a.m. Sundays. He said the club no longer

Griffis began as part of scow crew, now owns two
has regattas for MC and M20 scows. The yacht club is affiliated with the
M20 Sailing Association and Interna-tional MC Class Sailboat Racing Associ-ation.
Each weekend after Labor Day, a three-basin race, the Ray Harman Classic, is held. It’s probably best viewed from the beach in front of the Potawatomi Inn.
“To watch a race, if you don’t understand, it’s a mystery,” Griffis said.
That may be true for those who don’t understand the pasttime. Griffis said it has a certain grace.
Steuben County may be known for having 101 lakes, but it also features two other yacht clubs, both with lengthy histories and annual summer races.
Those two other yacht clubs — Clear Lake and Lake George have their own history and traits. The following is a brief look at each one:
Clear Lake Yacht ClubThe Clear Lake Yacht Club was
launched with a regatta in 1934 that sparked the facility’s long history. That led to the club’s establishment in 1935 that was centered around yacht racing.
The top winner received a trophy of a cup with two funnels and a pair of tin cups.
Sailing members eliminated the 50-cent boat entry fee in 1936 feeling people couldn’t afford it.
The clubhouse building project started in 1938 and was improved upon over the years. Finally, in 1949, the mortgage was burned.
The club eventually added tennis courts, various activities and even a children’s sailing school for members.
Lake George Yacht ClubAn online “Sailing Magazine” article
said for more than 50 years, the Inland Cat Class Sailing Association has been affiliated with the Lake George Yacht Club. The lake has the unique claim that part of it lies in Michigan and part in Indiana. But that doesn’t stop the action.
The club was organized in 1957 with the Inland Cats introduced to summer residents by Norm Bell and John Larimore. The Inland Cat was one of the first all-Fiberglas sailboats.
Lake racing started that same year with six two-person boat crews. Their competition was a quest for the Design-er’s Trophy, a miniature 135-square foot Inland Cat sail.
Lake George’s annual regatta is held the last weekend of July.

AUBURN — The Downtown Auburn Business Association will present its summer art exhibit, “‘Pedaling Art’ — Bringing Art to Auburn One Bike at a Time 2014.”
The exhibit will feature 20 beach cruiser bicycles. The new bicycles are being provided by Moe’s Bikes and More of Auburn. Special stands are being made by local carpenter Pat Payton of Dink’s Woodshop in Auburn. The stands will elevate the bikes’ rear wheels, allowing people to pedal the bikes in place.
The “Pedaling Art” exhibit will be the first interactive art exhibit DABA has
presented. The bikes will be on display from June through September in the downtown Auburn business district and will feature created art from local and regional artists. Cash awards will be presented at the end of the exhibit.
The bikes will be auctioned Thursday, Sept. 11, with proceeds being split between each artist and DABA.
DABA has partnered with OmniSource to present this summer’s exhibit. The project also has received the backing and support of many in the community, with businesses and individuals sponsoring the individual bikes.

Northeastern Indiana is blessed with many lakes and rivers for summer recreational activities like boating, fishing, water skiing, tubing and swimming.
Those wishing to swim can use public beaches free of charge except for state park entrance fees. Lifeguards are on duty most days during the summer months, and some beaches are protected from boaters with roped off areas.
Swimmers taking a plunge in lakes without public beaches do so at their risk.
Here is a list and locations of public beaches in the four-county area:
• Noble County – Sand Lake in Chain O’ Lakes State Park, S.R. 9, three miles south of Albion; and Bixler Lake Park east and west beaches, Bixler Lake, Kendallville;
• Steuben County – Pleasant Lake,
Lake Street behind Pleasant Lake Elemen-tary School, Pleasant Lake; Clear Lake, Steuben County Park on Lake Drive on the southeast side of the lake in Clear Lake; Crooked Lake, Steuben County Park off C.R. 200W on east side of first basin; Hamilton Lake, S.R. 1 on the south side of the lake, Hamilton; Pokagon Main Beach, Pokagon State Park, Lake James, near Angola; and Pokagon Inn Beach, Pokagon State Park, Lake James, near Angola.
• LaGrange County – Atwood Lake Beach, C.R. 700S, north side of Atwood Lake; Shipshewana Lake Beach, east side of the lake, Shipshewana; and Cedar Lake Beach, C.R. 325 and C.R. 600N across from Cedar Lake Golf Course.
• DeKalb County - no public beaches but community swimming pools are located in Feick Park, Garrett, and Eckhart Park, Auburn.
