This report is to describe the project that is based on brand awareness,
positioning and ultimately business generation of the IT training wing of
HCL INFOSYSTEMS named as HCL CAREER DEVELOPMENT
CENTRE (CDC).HCL INFOSYSTEMS had started its educational and
training wing called HCL CDC in Kolkata on 29th march 2007
HCL-CDC is the IT training division of 15,000 crores HCL Infosystems,
India's premier information enabling company. Leveraging its 31 years of
rich expertise in total technology solutions .The mission of this training
division is to provide quality I.T education to students and fresh graduates to
provide industry ready man-power to I.T industry and eventually the vision
of HCL CDC is to bridge the skill gap between academics and industry.
Since HCL CDC Kolkata has been in this field for the past 1 year hence our
primary objective was to build awareness about it and position the same
properly in the minds of the student community. Ultimately all this is
directed towards handsome business generation of the company.
For the above mentioned objective the first and the foremost thing which we
did was a competition analysis. We visited the centres of our competitors as
students, met their counselors, faculties and obtained all the detailed
necessary information about their infrastructure, courses curriculum, fees
structure, certification, duration, etc .We gave all the detailed feed back to
our centre and chalked out our plan of action accordingly. We have to carry
out our actions under two subheads i.e. Corporate and Retail. In corporate
section, under institutional alliances account we visited various colleges
(technical and non technical) and educational institutes, had initial interaction
with their management and officials for the purpose of having a institutional
5
alliance between company and HCL CDC by setting up converges labs and
summer training for students of institutes .Under Prometric and corporate
account we visited various corporate offices and companies for providing
them facility of various certification and training requirements.
Apart from this in retail account we also visited various colleges across West
Bengal and invited various prospective students at HCL CDC to address
them through counseling sessions and arrange Aptitude tests for them.
Besides doing all these we also conducted a special kind of activity. We
showed them benefits and finally we are looking for a commercial win –win
situation. Final objective of all these activities is to get regular walk-ins in
HCL CDC and to enroll them in various courses and training programs of
HCL and generating business for HCL CDC.

2. SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMS
Under this account various colleges were approached so that summer
internship programs in different modules could be provided to interested
students. For this purpose various seminars and presentations were made
to the students as well as faculty staff members. Apart from this
information desks were put on in these colleges so that various queries
could be taken care of. For the purpose of training mainly colleges in
West Bengol were considered due to the fact that people from different
were reluctant to come in other state and stay for few weeks during
training period.
CORPORATE SECTOR
I. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN TERMS OF CORPORATE
TRAINING FOR COMPANIES:
The prospective customers in terms of companies are recognized by
getting in contact with them, identifying their training needs and then
30
catering to their IT requirements through Corporate Training. This is initiated
in several ways like –
1.Choosing the companies first :
Selecting the IT & non IT companies who may look forward for
training of their employees to train them in required technologies. This
information is gathered through various sources like internet, past records etc.
2. Making “Cold Calls” to selected companies: Making calls to the
respective companies to know about their different training requirements.
3. Once a dialog has been established and the company stands as a customer
to us, the need is of regular Follow ups and it becomes very important in the
case of software companies because suddenly a new project comes in their
pipeline and the technology is new for the employees. This is the time when
they start looking for options to outsource this training.
4. Training Proposal Submission.
5. Negotiation and Submission of Order Price
To derive value from our interaction with the HR managers of
different companies, we thought that it would be profitable for HCL if we can
analyse and come up with top three IT training requirement for IT as well as
Non IT companies. Our team visited many companies to search for the
opportunities for creating business. The companies belonged to different
sectors like IT/ITES Sector, Retail, Banking and other financial services,
31
Manufacturing, Telecom , PSUs etc placed in Kolkata like Tata Steel,
Crompton Greaves, ONGC, LIC, SAIL etc.
Finally we decided to conclude on the following points after our interaction
with various companies:
1. IT Training Requirement for the companies
2. Training Calendar followed by the companies
3. Number of Employees participating in the training and the factors on
which this depends
4. Competitors which are also targeting Corporate Training
5. Why the companies should chose HCL to satisfy their training need?
6. To know about different technologies in which training requirements
may erupt in those companies.
32
IT Training Requirement:.
After short listing the companies, our next step is to conclude the top three IT
Training modules which are required in these companies. This would be
beneficial for HCL CDC so that it can modify the modules and can also
sharpen the skills of the trainer in these modules. The companies can be
treated as a sample and then the conclusion derived can be superimposed on
all of the companies in India belonging to different sectors to broaden the
idea of IT Training and IT literacy levels. As already mentioned the sample
consists of two different segments as follows:
1. IT Organizations: For getting the detail about the IT modules on
which HCL CDC should work on to hone its skills so that the
frequency with which they are in demand could be satisfied by us, we
interacted with HR managers, IT managers of these companies.
Interaction with them helped us to segregate IT modules according to
the priorities given by the companies.
Others include training on Windows Vista, SAP, CRM etc.Since most of
the IT companies work on .NET & SQL Server 2005, so HCL should focus
on giving more stress on enhancing the skills of our trainers in these
technologies.
2. Non IT Companies: As mentioned in the previous page, this
segment comprises of the companies belonging to different sectors
like Retail, Banking and other financial services, Manufacturing,
Telecom , PSUs etc placed in Kolkata. Information was collected
following same path as done for IT organizations. As the work
33
culture is different from IT sector, so we came to know that
companies do not need high end technologies for training of the
employees. This resulted in different set of IT modules required by
these companies.
Enlisted corporates were researched to know different training requirements which may erupt in them.

HCL advantages , edge over other competitors which HCL CDC will offer.
As a result we also came to know about the awareness level among the
people about HCL CDC and their perception about the same.

The HCL Edge:
• HCL-CDC is the biggest in terms of Infrastructure as it has a carpet
area of more than 10000 square feet at 50 Chowringhee Road, Kolkata.
• Compared to its competitors HCL-CDC is an Industry instead of a
training institute. Its presence in the IT Industry for over 31 years helps
HCL-CDC to stamp its authority right away.
• A minimum of 5 interviews for each student will be organized by
HCL-CDC. It doesn’t believe in saying something like a job guarantee
since getting a job is directly proportional to the capability of the
student as well.
43
• In HCL-CDC, the first glimpse of an Industry giving training is
clearly visible in the form of Antistatic Labs ( clearly looking at the
safety issues of the students) and the very latest Routers ( speaking of
the latest technologies from HCL Infosystems).
• HCL-CDC promises that during the tenure of a course if there is a
technology change in the industry, it will be included in that very
course.
Conclusion
HCL CDC is at its nascent stage of development, so even if the family
brand HCL is known in the consumers mind then too the Career
development centre is not known by many people and people are skeptical
about adopting and trying it. Reasons being a large number of competitors
are present in the market they know consumers needs and preferences and
they know about the current trends present in the market.
HCL has got very excellent infrastructure and has got all the Oracle, Java,
Microsoft original books and softwares. It has got excellent and experienced
trainers who provide practical training and knowledge so that to create
industry ready workforce who can join the IT companies.
Various products and training programs are very cheap as compared to
products available at the market and it has added feature of free
complementary training and 20 % discount on the online exam provided by
44
Venders and people undergoing training would be given certificate of
training from venders like Microsoft, Red Hat, Oracle etc.
HCL CDC has its large number of temporary workforce and they keep
on changing from month to month thus it is good if there are permanent
employees who could do the survey ,collect data and arrange meetings
with the human resource manager so that long term relationship could be
maintained with them.
Limitations
1. Geographical location: This was important factor, as all the
companies do not have their corporate head offices situated in Kolkata
itself. Decisions regarding the training are taken by Head Departments,
so the local offices could not take the ownership regarding proposals.
Secondly, HCL is not having any centre at Salt Lake so many I.T
employees are not willing to come at Chowringhee for Prometric test
so far away.
2. Communication: At the time of counseling of the students of
Colleges across West Bengal, many of the students were not
conversant with English or Hindi. It created a new hurdle to convey the
proper message in Bengali for us being a new learner of this language.
45
3. Lack of Awareness: Though It has well known mother brand
attached to it, yet the places where it is introduced as Career
Development Center like Institutes it creates difficulty in creating
handsome business out of such alliances. Also students do not want to
take risk regarding their future. They feel reluctant in taking the
decisions regarding opting the courses from the newly developed
educational wing.
4. Convey Delivery Gap: This is to indicate the gap that is created at the
time of telephonic discussions. Sometimes it is seen that the content
get mislead due to absence of physical interaction with the concerned
persons. A minor misunderstanding distorts the whole idea of the goal.
5. Time constraint: The timing of entering into colleges for Institutional
Alliances was inappropriate since at that time all the students were
engaged either with their exams and many colleges were having there
vacations.

Recommendations
1. Arrange the PROMETRIC™ Test center near the corporate offices of
various companies because the employees are having a scarcity of time to
come so far away at the regional center to give the test of short duration .
2. HCL should spend more funds on promoting Career Development
Centre and advertising about the products in television, magazines,
OOH(Out Of Home) advertising to spread awareness about it.
3. Various Scholarships and discount offer should be offered to the
prospective students from time to time.
4. In PROMETRIC™ the company should try to provide training at the right
time keeping in mind the urgency of the need of the companies, so that the
image of the companies remain same and would not be diluted by not
providing or arranging for trainer as and when required.
5. The company needs to increase its work force in order to bring stability in
the organization.
