Each E-7 CPO Examination is made of: 100 Rating questions 100 Professional Knowledge questions
Each Sailor’s profile is consisted of: PMA, Performance Mark Average. Otherwise
known as your last 36 months of E-6 36 months of E-6 EvaluationsEvaluations
PNA, Passed but Not Advanced pointsThis exam is not like an E-4/5/6 so you
can not use award points or anything else to gain extra points to make board.
Start studying early. Beginning to study as soon as the new BIBs come out!!
Use newly frocked CPOs and/or senior FCPOs that have already taken the test as reference points as to what they have already been studying.
Study in groups for both rating knowledge and professional knowledge. You never know who remembers what from an exam.
Remember all your exam questions will come straight from the BIB.
Use your last profile sheet to guide you in areas that you are strong and weak in, but remember that no two examinations are never the same.
Try to study no more than 45 minutes a day. However, keep in mind that your brain stops taking it in after 45 minutes of hard concentration so remember to take breaks.
Quiz yourself and/or your buddies in hopes that you both remember everything.
According to a new NAVADMIN and the test writing section of EPMAC: CPO Examinations no longer have
individual chapters listed on the FY-09 BIB. Sailor’s testing in January 2008 are required to review the book in its entirety.
Having a Career Development Board as soon as you find out that you are Board Eligible is crucial in making sure your package has the correct information.
Your CDB should consist of the CMC, CCC, and your LCPO. (A mentor may attend if you want.)
If your LCPO is not your rating, it is a good idea to have a CPO of your rating review your record and give you feedback.
Go to NKO, under the Leadership tab, and look at the CPO Induction material and start doing some of the requirements.
It never hurts to start preparing yourself early instead of waiting until you find your name on the list.
START GETTING INTO SHAPE!START GETTING INTO SHAPE! Don’t wait until you have 5 weeks of CPO Induction to try to get into better shape to look good in Khakis.
Everyone’s question is “What does the board look for in an E-6 going up for Chief?” First, look at the previous year’s Precept that is
found on the NPC website to give you an idea of what the previous board looked at in Sailors that ultimately resulted in them being selected for Chief.
Ask a SCPO/MCPO if they could review your record with you and provide you some feedback on how you are tracking for leadership.
Have someone explain to you the true meaning of your evaluations. Know what is qualitative and what is quantitative that will get you promoted.
THE FORGOTTEN BLOCK:
This block is used to tell the boards and your reviewers what your goals in the Navy are.

Diversity in Assignments: Have a CCC or your LCPO explain in depth a
true meaning of diverse in assignments and if you have achieved that going into the board.
Sea/Shore Rotations - Solid performance at sea, ashore, and overseas in diverse assignments in always good.
Candidates ARE NOT penalized for back to back assignments in the geographical area – as long as the S/S rotation was maintained.
Individual Augumentee (IA) Assignments. This is not your golden ticket into khaki!!This is not your golden ticket into khaki!! - BUT it helps display your leadership
skills, knowledge in rate and anti-terrorism, and your willingness to take on challenges outside your normal comfort zone and your day-to-day life.
It also shows your commitment to the Navy and its mission and success.
The number #1 criteria for E-7 Selection:
SUBSTAINED SUPERIOR SUBSTAINED SUPERIOR PERFORMANCEPERFORMANCE
Critical that you break out from your peers. Promotion recommendations and soft-breakouts. Boards look for career progression and positive trends.
Candidate’s evaluation trait average in relation to the Commanding Officer’s (report senior) cumulative trait average is important.
Once you have found your name on the list and you have been selected for CPO, pick a Chief Sponsor. This Chief should be someone that you trust and know will support you in all your efforts and decision making while you go through transition from “Blue Shirt to Khaki”.
