INTRODUCTION00

It’s always so amazing to me when I see the little ones that are still infants or perhaps just budding on the brink of toddlerhood. They are going through the stages of learning that when they push air from their mouth, it makes noise! These little boogers are trying to figure out how and what exactly they construct by doing that. As parents, of course, we giggle because we know that if they can just get it right, we will reap the benefits of uncovering just a tad bit more of their beautiful little personalities.

Perhaps you haven't reached that point just yet and currently working on getting a few words out your tot. No fret, we all had to learn to talk at one point in time, right?

Considering, we also know that once they learn to talk the odds of relieving those quiet days before they discovered the wonders of talking is pretty slim to not happening. So, before I share a few pointers of how you can help your toddler learn to talk, let's take a moment and have a few seconds of silence. A few seconds to reminisce on the days before our talking toddler learned the first word that catapulted them into a nonstop memorization of just about every word in the English dictionary.Granted, your toddler may talk nonstop; we have to admit that their first word was one of those milestones we were eager to reach and gabbed about for the days and months to come.

Right.

That skill would be communication, and as we know, effective communication is essential.

So, rest assure, there are more than a few words in your toddler, you just have to work with them to develop (trust me, they don't need much help in mastering it) the skill of using their words. In other words, you have to help teach your toddler to talk. Most cases we think of talking kind of like walking and any other routine and automatic function that comes with time. Well, quite honestly, you're right and wrong. Unless there is something bigger working against these odds, your toddler will eventually learn to talk. You are talking to your toddler often, and she will soon begin to mimic your words, responding to your words through behavior until she does learn vocabulary that effectively communicates with you. All true, but there is also the opportunity to teach her on purpose versus leaving her to learn accidentally. The interesting part of it all is that the process includes quite simple day-to-day activities. The best thing about teaching your toddler to talk is that simultaneously you can demonstrate another skill without doing too much extra work!

01 TALK TO YOUR TODDLER & LISTEN

Yep! That’s it. If you want to teach your toddler to talk, then talk to your toddler. Why?

Well, one thing we have all learned (seriously, EVERY parent has learned this lesson), children are master recorders. They will repeat everything you say. However, it is important that when focusing on teaching them to talk, you concentrate more on building their ability to communicate effectively. While it is important that you keep the conversation age appropriate enough for their little minds to grasp. This leads to our next key tip.

02 AVOID THE BABY TALK

It is also imperative to avoid the baby talk just a little bit. More than a little bit would be quite helpful, besides, when helping your toddler learn new words, it's not useful for progression. Because most baby talk includes saying words incorrectly to meet the “cute” standards of baby talk it works against your efforts. I understand, it can be quite hard; it seems like an automatic response when you see the tiny, adorable people.Avoiding baby talk is critical when they are learning to identify objects. Repeat the name of the object and give them a sentence that illustrates the object. Repetition teaches them to recognize, and illustrating the object further than its identity encourages their little minds to go further. While talking is important and a primary component of communication, it is only one ingredient; the other will be listening. Not too long ago I came across the cutest video ever. It was a toddler who was having a very intense conversation with her father. Judging from her facial expressions it was clear that whatever it was she was talking bout was vital. However, as for her father who stifled laughter, but listened attentively, it was literality a heap of cute gibberish. Not one word was recognizable. Her dad gave her his attention, and that is what is important when teaching your toddler to talk. You giving them your attention validate the importance of their words, clearly spoken or not.

03 KEEP IT SPUNKY

What is the one thing that irks you, and anyone else for that matter, when having a conversation with someone?

We are eager to hear from you, especially if you have experienced this stage in toddlerhood. What were your tactics when helping your toddler learns to speak?Share with the community!

Lifeless conversation, complete with the very monotone voice that shows no emotion at all. It is the worst.Your kids feel the same. So, when teaching tot to talk, pour on the feelings. Express the words energetically! An article I read over on mommyshorts.com suggested changing the volumes of your voice when speaking to your toddler. Also, hand gestures work in conversations between mature individuals, so we can only gather that it will serve as a significant component when speaking with your tot.Besides, the best form of interactive learning for your toddler is not going to come from the latest software development, but directly from you.A few other things to remember while teaching your toddler to talk is keep it fun and don't stress yourself out. Talking comes naturally. While some kids may start saying words before others, there is no race. However, if you notice there is a delay in the time that your child shows signs of verbal communication consider speaking with a speech therapist to provide a little more insight.
