IB Written Assignment Article Research
Assignment:1. From the IB Core Topics & Aspects (see next page), choose 2 possible
topics of interest (from 2 different core topics), research them in English,and complete the “WA Topic Selection Worksheet” for each topic.
2. Find 2 texts in Japanese (one for each topic you researched) that meet therequirements of the IB Written Assignment. (See attached for requirementsand list of text types)
3. Complete a “Written Assignment Article Assessment” for each text. Makesure you fill out all information on the assessment sheet or you will not getpoints for that article.
4. Print out the articles and attach to the assessment sheet (Make sure toinclude the URL). Also be sure to save an electronic copy of the article forfuture reference.
A list of websites to help you get started with your research follows theTopics/Aspects list, but you are not restricted to these sources.
This assignment should take approximately 10 hours to complete in its entirety.
Counts as a grade for 1st quarter next year (40 points - 20 points for each set –article + worksheets).
Teacher Availability: Teachers return to work on Monday August 21st, but I will be checking email periodically throughout the summer. If you have any questions about the assignment, please email me and I will reply as soon as possible.
Hard copies of the assignment will be distributed before the end of the year andwill also be available to download and print from the SLHS WEBSITE.
THE ASSIGNMENT MUST BE TURNED IN BY THE 1ST CLASS PERIOD OF THE 3RD
WEEK OF SCHOOL (9/11 OR 9/12), BUT CAN BE SUBMITTED AS EARLY AS THEFIRST DAY OF CLASS. ANY LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ONE WEEK AFTERTHE DEADLINE FOR 70% OF THE EARNED GRADE AS PER THE WORLD LANGUAGEDEPARTMENT LATE POLICY.
IB Language B Core Topics
There are three topics in the core. • Communication and media • Global issues • Social relationships These three topics are compulsory at SL and HL. Students are required to study at least two aspects from each core topic.
Communication and media How people interact, transmit and gather data for the purposes of information and entertainment. Possible aspects to cover: • advertising • bias in media • censorship • internet • mail • press • radio and television • sensationalism in media • telephone
Global issues Current matters and future scenarios that have an impact at a regional, national and/or international level, bearing in mind that they need to be addressed from the perspective of the target language’s culture(s). Possible aspects to cover: • drugs • energy reserves • food and water • global warming, climate change, natural disasters • globalization • international economy • migration (rural–urban, or international) • poverty and famine • racism, prejudice, discrimination • the effect of man on nature • the environment and sustainability
Social relationships
How people interrelate and behave—as members of a community, individually and in groups. Possible aspects to cover: • celebrations, social and religious events • educational system • language and cultural identity, or self-identity • linguistic dominance • minorities • multilingualism • nationalism, patriotism, fanaticism • relationships (friendship, work, family) • social and/or political structures • social behaviours and stances • taboos versus what is socially acceptable
