Google Updates

Find In Depth Articles

• Sometimes you want to find more about a topic and you find a lot of

superficial news articles and blog posts that keep rehashing the

same information.

• Google shows a list of in-depth articles for some queries, but this

feature seems to be restricted to the US and it's only displayed for

some queries

• How to manually trigger Google's in-depth section?

• Just add &tbs=ida:1&gl=us to a Google search URL and you'll see a

list of 10 in-depth articles from sites like Wall Street Journal, New York

Times, Wired, New Yorker, Slate and more.

“Google News Archive” - Via Search Tools

• Google has brought back the ability to search the Google News

Archive, dating back to news stories in 2003.

• In August 2011, Google removed the Google News Archive home

page and then during redesigns, the ability to search the archive

was dropped as well.

Google Asterisk * between terms

• Use the asterisk between two words to stand in for 1-5 words.

• This is useful if you want two of your keywords close to one another

but suspect that there may often be one or two words separating

them.

• For example: solar * panels will find:

• solar photovoltaic panels

• solar water heating panels

Use Google Drive as an OCR

• OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology that allows text

from images and PDFs to be read and converted into a searchable

and editable document.

• To do this in Google Drive, right click on a PDF, then Open with >

Google Docs. Once you have opened it in Google Docs format, save

it again and you’ll have your searchable doc

Project Naptha

• Highlight, copy, edit, and translate text from any image on the

web

• Project Naptha automatically applies state-of-the-art computer

vision algorithms on every image you see while browsing the web.

The result is a seamless and intuitive experience, where you can

highlight as well as copy and paste and even edit and translate the

text formerly trapped within an image.

Dan David Prize – to Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Co-Founder

• Tel Aviv University announced yesterday! the recipients of the

international prize, which annually makes three awards for

outstanding achievement in the categories of past, present and

future time dimensions. Each award in a category is $1 million.

• Wales was recognized in the Present Time Dimension: The

given free access to the sum of all human knowledge,” according to

a statement from the prize committee.

WikiWand

• Wikipedia's presentation is a lot of things—dense, interesting, and

busy—but no one would call it pretty.

• Wikiwand optimizes all Wikipedia content with its own interface,

and makes sure whenever you click a link for Wikipedia, you see

Wikiwand's much-improved page look instead.

• You can even customize it, so the fonts and images come in just

the way you like.

• Available in Firefox, Safari & Chrome.
