In Vain!

(Isa 4:1) And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will

eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name,

to take away our reproach.

What is the Biblical definition “to taking God’s

name in vain”?

(Exo 20:7) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD

thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his

name in vain.

I. The DESIRE for his name


eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy

name, to take away our reproach.

A.The PRETENDING to have his name

(2Ch 7:14) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray,

and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their

sin, and will heal their land.

III. The DEFILEMENT of our own apparel




A.Our apparel doesn’t have the PURITY needed

(Isa 61:10) I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the

garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of

righteousness…

(Job 29:14) I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a

robe and a diadem.

(Rev 19:8) And to her was granted that she should be

arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the

righteousness of saints.


B.Our apparel doesn’t have the PROPER covering

(Gen 3:7) And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

(Rev 16:15) Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and

keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

(1Jn 2:28-29) And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall

appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his

coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that

doeth righteousness is born of him.

(Rev 3:17) Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and
